It's like some close-minded people want to define goth rock so that metal can never be mixed with it... the second any metal influence shows up they want to drop it and walk away like it's diseased. It's entirely possible to blend the two, just like it was possible to blend genres to come up with what was later termed goth in the first place. Also, gothic metal never was 'goth'... to many people's confusion, it simply describes metal that evoked Gothic atmosphere (as in Gothic literature).
i don't entirely disagree with you, there are definitely some bands i listen two that could loosely be described as metal or metal adjacent. but i think that the sentiment you refer to is more of an observation that there are some core parts of the moods of both genres seem at least slightly antithetical to each other. Goth always seemed to emphasize femininity (girls i the genre often dress hyper-feminine and boys quite androgynous). Goth tends to be an introspective genre, with roots in the very literary post-punk scene with bands like the cure, echo and the bunny men and siouxsie & the banshees mentioning philosophies and literary books by name, usually very strictly within an existentialist context. goth music in genral seemed to distance itself from its punk beginnings by steering away from distortion and up tempo music (allowing some traditionally gothic acts to deeply infiltrate the mainstream like depeche mode or nick cave) though remaining generally loyal to punks minimalism. all of this is in direct contrast with metal. metal (especially at the time) tended to be hypermasculine with songs like Sammy Hagar's 'heavy metal' even mentioning that metal girls can hold their own against the boys. they were generally very openly blue collar, and at times outright anti-intelectual, embracing more accessible pop-cultural influences like Tolkien and since the beginnings of metal there has been a strong trend towards faster, louder more complex music. when i was in my late teens and bands like within temptation and evanescence started showing up i had many a fight with my metalhead friends about where they should fall. my metalhead friends all found them to be too soft, too slow and technically insufficient to be true metal, so they considered it goth. i on the otherhand found them to be too loud, and to finicky and to obviously metal to be goth so i considered them metal. the only thing we could agree on was that they definitely weren't trve nor cvlt and only p[osers would listen to them. though my insistance of genre purity has definatly lost it's edge since then i now explain this antagonism as stemming mostly from the fact that most metalhead, and most goths are looking for an entirely diferent 'feel' or atmosphere in their music. but you are right that that doesn't mean it's impossible to combine the two or at the very least elements of the two. i would argue that black metal actually took quite some cues of early goth, and a lot of shoe-gaze bands (i would consider most shoe-gaze to generally fall under the umbrella of goth) are very adept at using black metal elements in their music (i like sun devoured earth). there are also doom bands like fvnerals that take quite a bit from goth, and you could argue that a band like jessica 93 applies typically doom metal ideas to gothic rock. i don't think there will ever be a band that will be appreciated equally by both sides though. the moment thing become to brutal the goths leave the building, and the moment it becomes to ethereal the metalheads do also, as a side note, gothic rock was never goth... to many peoples confusion, it simply describes post-punk that evoked Gothic atmosphere (as in Gothic literature). also gothic literature was never goth... to many peoples confusion, it simply describes literature that evoked Gothic atmosphere (as in Gothic architecture). also gothic architecture was never goth... to many peoples confusion, it simply describes architecture that the peoples from the renaissance era considered to be medieval and thus barbaric, and since the Goths helped topple the Roman empire (the cool older brother that the renaissance era desperately tried to be like) causing the dreaded 'dark-ages' they decided to call this ugly and barbaric style of architecture after the barbarians that they hated for causing the medieval era. isn't etymology just fucking fascinating?
