    I shared this video with a small group of High School guys that I lead weekly. It led to a dynamic conversation on accountability and ethics. Thanks for a great lesson starter.

    I like "may I have your word that you will look out for my interest" Fostering honesty is good.

    Great video. I teach Personal Finance at the Bauer College of Business at University of Houston. I'm going to start using the Moral Alarm in our class as it relates to money, values, purpose, and GOAL SETTING.

    Wow! I'm really struggling with my 17 year old. I was raised that a lie is a HUGE morale failing. Thank you for this video. Phew!

    Great video, but in some moments the song in the back conflicts with what they're saying... Kinda confusing.

    What is the scienctific reason to lie? Why do siblings lie and blame each other? Why don't people take it on the chin and admit they've lied? Do we fear getting in trouble for telling the truth, or more trouble for lying? There has to be a reason.

    Helpful! Especially appreciate the "judgment" part of it (guilty of it....). The subjects appeared to be inspired by their commitment to be truthful....interesting! What would the purpose of this be from a survival standpoint?

    I say it's learned behaviour.
    Most kids are lied to several times a year, of course they'll end up lying.
    I have zero tolerance for lies no matter how big or small one lie I'm out be it friend's/blood or not.

    Good vids, thx guys! I have a vivid question to ask you. Can you tell me why on earth the majority of humans will -subconsciously or not- want to hurt a person that's already been hurt in a simular way before? This counts for family and friends. Example: a new partner seeks to hurt you after knowing you've had separations or are divorced. Even not knowing abt the details, that new partner triggers you and hurts you in many ways you've been hurt in the past. Other example: A friend hears abt your struggles and hurts, and at first seems very understanding. Until someday she/he hurts you the same way you where hurt in the past. Or will trigger that pain in you with a didplaced remark, or escaping help, etc. I've seen this go on so many times in life...
    What on earth is going on here! I really need to know. Is it a deep lack of empathy amoungst most people? So sad. I never use peoples bad experiences to hurt them later on even further. So bad. But, most people feel superior when they do that. It's so stupid, and very hurtful, though. Thx for a reply. 🤗

    So what about a corporation (a person) - if a corporation that can make more money by lying -- then it must do so, since stockholders will demand it. Even if they get caught, if the fine is less than the profit... lying will triumph....surprised you overlooked that point.

      The only moral for a corporation is ensuring maximum ROI. That's literally codified into the laws of incorporation, which is even more fucked up.

    Interesting stuff.But why didn't the Bible study class act as a moral reminder?

    • @waltcamp45
      @waltcamp45 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would have been interesting to see the results if there was a third group - one (from the same school) that had NOT either attended Bible study or signed a moral code. It's possible that the Bible study group lies were lower in magnitude than they would have been otherwise. In other words, the Bible studies may have had a dampening effect. Or not ... just speculation :-)

    • @itgold

      I would ask - How is bible related to the scientific study?

    • @JosephGrenny
      @JosephGrenny 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Other studies have shown even the simple presence of something like a Bible (or even a bar of soap!) increase moral alertness. I suspect the Bible Study did not prime morality here because it happened 1-2 hours earlier AND was not connected with the context of the experiment. This illustrates how easily we lapse back into "moral slumber" - we need to continually reawaken ourselves to the moral content of our decisions. Study of sacred texts can certainly do that for us - but must be renewed regularly to be effective!

    • @waltcamp45
      @waltcamp45 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joseph Grenny I wonder if the sacred texts need to be personally relevant to achieve the effect. For example, would non-Christians cheat more or less if performing this activity in a place in which the Ten Commandments were displayed? Of course, it gets a bit dodgy doing empirical studies on honesty and religion, so this is (and will likely remain) more a thought experiment than anything else. Also, I wonder if texts/visual reminders that are moral but not sacred would have the same (degree of) impact.

      I did notice that the guy with the score of 16 is black. But you see, most of them lied on the first part of the experiment and most of them did not lie on the second, regardless of their skin color. Get the point?
