Outstanding overview. As others note below, you cover the points step by step with use cases for each. Very practical, and done in a conversational tone. I learned more with this that over 10-15 other videos. Thanks for putting this together!

Thank's Mitch for your video. There are quite a few Garmin64s video tutorials on TH-cam I've watched and yours is by far the best. The slow methodical explanation and camera angle showing exactly the sequences to follow are really clear and helpful. Thank you for taking the time...

What a famous name Scheuermann in the medical profession. Scheuermann's diseases is a spinal illness. However, this person explaining the Garmin is experienced and I give a thumbs up for this documentary. Well done and good explained.

    Hi Mitch;
Thanks for the video. I was a bit
Shocked because i’m just down the road in Beaverlodge. I’ve had my 64s for a couple of years and I confess never spent the time to really explore alloy’s capabilities. For me it’s hunting and woodlot management so lots of tracks and points. You might touch on this further on on the voids but the issue of computer interface and mapping has always been a problem for me
    Pete

Red arrow show up indicating direction to a Waypoint.
When no Waypoint was selected, the red arrow is not shown.

I finally discovered what happens with recycled rubber tires. GARMIN must use it for their "keyboards" - terrible keyboards. Thank goodness for aftermarket suppliers for doing what GARMIN should have done for software in the first place.
You mentioned "WATERPROOFING". The same design has been used for GARMIN when it comes to SD card storage. THROUGH A HOLE, UNDER the BATTERY COMPARTMENT.
Not the brightest design. The liquid from a corroding battery can, if your unit is resting on it's face, run down through the hole AND CORRODE THE PCB. Our company always seals the hole with DUCT TAPE to prevent corrosion.

Hit the "Find" button and then go to tracks. It will give you the option of cancelling current/active tracks so it won't start tracking again until you go back in and turn it on...

I "upgraded" from my 60csx. It was light years ahead of my 64st. It is so difficult to use that I just use my iPhone and the geocaching app to go geocaching.

Super important ALWAYS CALIBRATE you compass before you set off on your hike etc and before you put in your first waypoint. DO NOT DO THIS AT HOME BUT WHEN YOU GET THERE.

Yes. They are called “tracks.” Save your tracks at the end of the hike and just follow them back.

Would you say this 64s unit is still decent for hiking? I would use different maps and custom waypoints.
I was thinking about picking up this one or the etrex 30x.
    I also found a cheap 60csx locally.

To improve "waterproofing" coat all rubber seals (battery & external connector cover) with SILICONE GREASE (NOT glue),

This is going to sound like a daft question to some folk.
When you go into marine and you go to set alarm for off route it commes up 0.000000 so for example if you want it set to 10 metres or equivalent in feet would it be 10.0000 or would it be 0.00010...
Would appreciate any advice ... thanks

WAAS will improve your position accuracy, but is only effective within North America. I would recommend leaving it on to benefit from it if you are in North America.

No matter what one’s opinion of the Garmin 64 is, the fact is, it’s completely archaic and annoying to use! It’s like using something it was designed in 1999 with the added benefit of a color screen. But that’s always been Garmins motto ya know selling subpar, mediocre devices and technology for a premium price! I really wish another company would step up and compete with them, it wouldn’t be hard to make better more reliable products that has a better operating system.
