This is wonderful Verdi singing--and I go a long way back: I've heard Gobbi, Quilico, Sereni, MacNeill, and Merrill live. I don't understand the hateful comments; these people are simply not listening.

the acting doesn't excite, you can't feel anything, and this is one of the most important scenes and like.... You can't feel anything! He has zero squillo, no big sound, small singing. And this "La porta, la porta" was horrible, there was a delay in the voice 0:50
Imho you need to hear, see and feel Rigoletto’s boiling anger and existential despair. In that regard Kelsey is unmatched. You might prefer Salsi who just started his run with this production at the Met. He comes from the Scala and likes to sing pitch perfect into the audience. I was bored and missed Kelsey.

When the conductor does not know what and why and the artistic director has no idea, it's always easy to blame the singer. As a baritone and a former agent of the MET myself, I have gone through this devellopment since 1980, still having been on stage in the times with Sawallisch, Levine, Rudel and many more, then suffered under the change of "taste" and later and as an agent having supported and helped many good singers...So this baritone here does not do anything wrong, he is just not been supported by the artistic staff...

First, his sound clearly isn't nasal. Second, to make the sound not nasal (if it were) opening his mouth more wouldn't solve the issue (but there is obviously none to be solved). Thirdly, I agree that here his voice sounds weirdly small (compared to other singers), but very beautiful and I am sure that the voice would be heard to the last row but I'm not sure and that's a guess based on this recording.
I heard him as Germont at Opera Memphis over 10 years ago and was overwhelmed with his beautiful, rich, resonant sound. His voice is now unrecognizable to me! This is terrible as is his Di Luna. Why js he crooning Verdi?! All this straight tone sounds like he is singing a Bach cantata. It is really sad that we are now supposed to accept this as a Verdi baritone.

First time I heard Mr. Kelsey was on a Richard Tucker gala several years ago. I just loved his voice, and have been happily following his progress. His Rigoletto is not like others I have heard, but I very much enjoyed the live online broadcast, and will be listening again on Tuesday.
If I could talk to this singer, I would just ask him to please sing from his heart. His singing lacks emotion/passion. To me, he sings this aria like a German lied. I heard him sing with Christian van Horn in a concert at Carnegie Hall. In that performance, he was also lacking passion.
