  • In Episode 15 of Northern Thai Garden Guy I finally review a product that I have been reading and researching for a couple of years now. It's benefits touted so promising that if even half of them turn out to be true, it really is worthy of the click-bait title above. I will let the video do the talking, but here are some additional benefits not discussed in the video due to time (their importance goes without saying).
    Additional Benefits of Chitosan:
    - Virus suppression (I could do a whole video on this alone).
    - Helps manage Stomatal transpiration even better (meaning your plant or tree will not transpire out the moisture it has just because it is too hot and will shut things down more readily during a sudden cold snap or frost).

    Thank you for giving so much more information. I bought some food grade chitosan, but felt very unsure how to use it. Now I have the liquid form, so much more comfortable with it. I do feel like it has been beneficial in several ways, but want to have a plan in place for my garden next year. I still have a few questions: Is there anything it should not be used on? Could foliar spray be applied with a hose end sprayer because my garden is large? Would a hose end sprayer work to apply to fruit trees? How often would you apply it throughout the summer? Would it be beneficial to do a soil drench after my garden is all harvested and the vines, etc. are disposed of? My strawberries have an issue like leaf spot and also white flies, etc., how would you deal with that while the plants are producing strawberries. Thank you so much, I feel like we all need some additional information on how to use it, and it sounds like you are an expert. I appreciate the fact that you spent so much time studying it out before sharing your video.

    Grind up shrimp heads and ferment with brown sugar like Fish Amino Acid or use LAB and molasses to ferment the ground up shrimp heads and shells. Bam! You have an amino acid fertilizer and a chitosan supplement.

      I was discussing this very process in one of my natural farming Facebook groups. The only question I have is going the opposite direction in pH leaves me wondering about the end result. The recipe I was given is 1 part ground exoskeleton (Shrimp most likely is what I will eventually use), 1 part LAB, 10 parts RO water. All that in a 5g bucket with a lid and a bubbler at the top for off-gassing. It needs to go no less than 3 months or when the bubbler is no longer showing activity.

      @Spencer_Plant_Projects 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@NorthernThaiGardenGuy pH is only and issue with LAB or EM ferments if you arent diluting appropriately. Personally there isnt a huge reason to use a TON of chitosan just to have enough around to impact the microbiology and stimulate ISR in plants. Dont use much more than a 1:100 for the molasses prep and dont use much more than a 1:500 for knf preparation.
      Your recipe is good. The LAB will process somewhere between 30-50% of the chitin into chitosan. Plus you will get the biostimulant properties of amino acids and polypeptides if you choose to include the guts or grind up whole shrimp.

    I bought a bottle of this lately thanks to you, and applied a thin foliar spray over some of my plants this morning. Just wondering if your bottle of Chitosan smelled like old sewer water? My bottle definitely has a unique odor. Did you get the results from your foliar spray that you were hoping for? Thanks for all your informative videos. Cheers, Richard

    • @NorthernThaiGardenGuy
      @NorthernThaiGardenGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah Richard that's totally what you will get. Kind of an off-putting smell of seafood, but that is where it comes from (shellfish waste). The one thing I have found out is there is no need for a wetting agent (the Chitosan makes a liquid plastic cap after being sprayed on the leaves) so you can remove that from the solution. Let me know how things look on your end and thanks for coming by!

    Thank you for all that information. A recipe would be great! How much raw crab or shrimp shell material would i need for a batch of 100 litres?
    Big parts of my garden seem to be infested with root knot nematodes and i would like to give this a try. (I have been using home made fihsh emulsion the whole last season and it did a great job... but the roots of many veggies still show a lot of damage.)

    • @NorthernThaiGardenGuy

      That's a really great question and a concerning condition that you describe. The recipe for making Chitosan ourselves is something I am still working on and will share once I have it down. The one I use in this video goes about 1 liquid cup in 5 gallons of water. As for the nematodes, you should look into Natural Farming and specifically KNF (Korean Natural Farming) for making IMO and the various stages to do so.

    Is a foliar application safe on edible fruits, vegetables and cannabis?

    • @NorthernThaiGardenGuy
      @NorthernThaiGardenGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe so. Take a look at the 3 part series in the description box below. Farmers go over the details of the differences in their crops, yields, and nutrients from just a single application some seasons ago. I cannot stake any specifics regarding Cannabis, but I would have to believe the benefits are equal as seen with the other crops.

      You can use " leaf mold " in a keg of water with a little fresh compost ( takes about 6 months to a year, you can dissolve a body in this stuff but it stinks like Holly Hell😁), or you can use enzymes the same ones they use for fish Emulsion or u can use fulvic acid preferably ful-power ( like the company nectar from the gods, they digest everything in this stuff, seaweed, kelp meal, Alfalfa Meal, pig meal ,pig bone meal ,Rock phosphate ,bone meal fish meal crab meal Leonardite, sugars, proteins, worn castings, bat guano etc) .
