I was playing with this a lot, and a few days ago the song just stuck in my ears, but I can't remember the title, somehow my memory always bring the title: Chase HQ, but finally I found it! Great memories, relief to my ears :)
Wow, what a game! I jumped off the C64 and onto the Amiga just as some magic games like this came out so I missed them.. some of the very best c64 titles of all it seems!
This game has possibly the best intro and the best music ever made for a video game. I loved this game when it came out and bought it on tape with it's nice odd sized luxury rectangular box.
Games like this showed how much people loved the c64 over there in Europe. There was nothing that could compare to this on the NES back here in the US. But maybe it was the nature of the beast? The c64 was obviously far more accessible than the NES for purposes of development, therefor far more people could develop for it. Bedroom coders would figure out tricks to push the system to the max & then share it with their brethren in the c64 hacking community. That just didn't exist w/ the NES!
@@KingofPotatoPeople Yeah I remember back around 1985 my C64 was a Boots exclusive deal. Not sure why Boots had an interest in selling consoles/computers back then? Obviously you could get the C64 in other outlets at time here. BTW I still have that original C64 set up in a room going strong.
@@SonicRSA1 Yeah the odd thing there wasn't really 'computer shops' either, I got most of my C64 games from the local.... PHARMACY (not even Boots, think it was lloyds or something)! I'm not even kidding!
"While I'm not a huge fan of the game, I hugely enjoyed producing all of the artwork. It was probably the closest I got to comic work at the time as I had the freedom to create imagery that illustrated one small aspect of a bigger story. In this image, we show the player smashing through a border. Not so sure about the depiction of the car, but I really like what I did with the three cops, especially the poor fellow rolling over the bonnet!" -- Robin Levy, graphic artist (Turbo Charge, C64)
The NES didn't have the same market here in the UK because it was really expensive and the only place you could get the games was Toys R' Us; there was certainly nowhere in town that stocked the games. However, you could walk into your local newsagent/post office and there were racks of the latest C64/Spectrum/Amstrad games on sale for £1.99 and £2.99. This coupled with the fact anyone could pick up a machine and write games (no "seal of approval" necessary!) meant there was a thriving market.
5:10 Did they just pull a "pick the wrong direction and you die"? lol Amazing graphics though. What a contrast to the 4-colour drabness of the mid-80's. It always feels really good to look at a C64 game with lots of colour. Turrican series as well.
System 3 was one of the top-tier developers for the C64 and Turbocharge cost £15.99 on disk and £10.99 on tape; it wasn't cheap for your average gamer.
On the flip-side, a lot of the £1.99 and £2.99 games only lasted 30 minutes; they were really short. Even the more expensive £9.99 games were only a couple of hours long max. Many were poorly coded and wouldn't have been anywhere near the standard of your average NES game, but they were a price that reflected the quality :)
Wow! I had no idea Toys R' Us even existed outside of North America. And games priced in that range seems surreal. There was no way you could get games that cheap here in the US, even from stores selling them used. The closest were 'budget' games from software stores, usually for pc. And 'budget' meant the price had been reduced by the store from it's normal $20+ price tag to around $10 because of poor sales. No one made games to be sold for less than $20, not even shareware developers.
Regardless, there was a matching of quality to price there in the UK, and my guess the rest of Europe. Not so much here in the US. "Cheap" games were $20-$30, and top tier game companies regularly charged $60. It was because of a glut of high priced, poor quality games that we had the video game crash of 83'. After that, people wouldn't touch console games anymore. Thankfully game review magazines soon arrived, but the high prices remained. That's American capitalism for you. :-|
You have to watch which direction the CPU cars take at the fork - that gives you a clue. Destroy other vehicles to repair damage to your car (after each stage).
Rooneysithmaster There is a unofficial conversion of the game in Tosec. Nice instant loading compared to 5 mins or so a level when running off tape lol
The Last Ninja series (particularly the first two) were their best games, for sure. I never liked Vendetta either - it was a wasted opportunity and felt incomplete and underwhelming. I remember finishing Vendetta a couple hours after I purchased it, I almost threw the tape out the window in disgust!!
extremely overrated game,i think...average graphic, good sound and playability but really nothing special..didnt worth the purchase, nor the zzap! gold medal...my opinion is that many many gold medals, those days, have been awarded just because they were the last days of the C 64.
I was always a little sceptical about Sizzler/Gold Medal awards, since Zzap!64 were notorious for giving them out when they weren't justified - Golden Axe and Forgotten Worlds were prime examples. In the case of Turbo Charge though, I've always felt it worthy - it has its faults, but it's just awesome fun to play!! The sound effects and music get you so pumped, and the smooth-scrolling road is a marvel which give the game a real rollercoaster feel.
This game is part of the C64's Swan Song, the final years produced some great games!
Probably the highest ratio of quality games were in the final years. Not many releases towards the end but what came out were good quality.

ncf1 The C64 was still receiving some excellent games up until about 1993/93 - Turbocharge is certainly up there with the best of them 😃
Indeed, I have some catching up to do :)
This game has possibly the best intro and the best music ever made for a video game. I loved this game when it came out and bought it on tape with it's nice odd sized luxury rectangular box.
I'm impressed by the density and size of roadside objects!
Never heard of this game, this is pretty impressive. They managed to have a full sounding music with lead, bass and drums and SFX at the same time.
Absolutely amazing music on this game
this blow my head
Mind boggling! Just brilliant!
When this came out I was already in love with the Countach so this was as good as it got back then!
I wish I could have played this one back then. Looks like a lot of fun!

namayake NES was a Boots exclusive in the UK. Bizarrely.

Holy crap. Played this game a lot! And ignored my parents when they screamed to switch it off 🤣
This game is soooooo freakin’ rrrrrrraaaaddd!! 🤩 I’ve never heard of it before. Brilliant!
One of the most complete and better-finished C64 games back in the day.
5:10 Did they just pull a "pick the wrong direction and you die"? lol

Yep - pick the wrong turning at an intersection and you crash straight into a wall...pretty cheap 😁
I wish I'd had this on my C64 as a kid instead of Chase HQ.

I had the cartridge version.
I love how the picture of an alien is a xenomorph from the alien franchise . :)

nice, seems to be an evolution of power drift engine, same programmer
Has suspicous similarities to "Fire & Forget II", but great game :)
the musicians sonix systems never got paid for the music for this. sys 3 didn't like paying people.. but was quite happy to profit off their work.
The programmers and musicians note that they loved what they did was a passion for programming more than a job
Beautiful times
while others (not so skilled) profitted off their talent.. you really are stupid.. perhaps you can go work for a week.. and then give me your wages.
@@nawletorre7136still no wants to get ripped off…

Defeating the final boss at 98% damage.. RESPECT! 😂✌
this was a geat game, like everything else system 3 releases, but unlike their other games, this was way too easy.
Hilarious ending.

WTF.... pretty hard finale!!
Yep - not only does the guy get a knife through the hand, he gets fried in an electric chair...good wholesome family fun!
Yes, and the electric shock is so high that the whole city goes on black out... is that suppose to be a funny gag??!
robin levy are amazing
what is the keyboard shortcut to fire the rocket (?) launcher? It appears that there is some sort of 'turbo' mode when pressing spacebar?
Remember the 64 only had one fire button. Tap to shoot, hold down the fire button to fire a rocket!
the fork in the road comes up and there's not way of knowing which way you're suppose to go, is there anyway to replenish the cars health ?
You have to watch which direction the CPU cars take at the fork - that gives you a clue.

Rooneysithmaster... Yup it did come out on cartridge. I had the cartridge.
It's not as fast as I remembered...I am a huge fan of System 3 but this and Vendetta are not the best in their catalogue.
