    The instructions for the super mack say to switch it to "remove G1 short" (at which point it cuts the heater voltage) and let it cool down for at least 30 seconds before pressing the button.
    As far as I can tell removing a G1 short is like burning off a tin whisker with current. It'll surge the grid and blow off any particles that may have gotten lodged in there during transport or when/if at some point the crt what turned vertical with the neck at the bottom and stuff fell into the gun. The short likely won't come back unless you were to upend it again

      It would be made out of ten times recycled ford tauruses and the rest would be asbestos with a sprinkling of glass shards that would resemble this lovely TV but in a really crumbly way like the lamented modern Crosley 300 in 1 classic-retro-magic vinyl grinder radios.

    • @alberttatlock5237

    I would like to see a video where you change the capacitors on this TV. I guess people might think me of being weird, but every piece of electronics is different. Besides, it's fun to hear you ramble about all sorts of stuff. I find it entertaining and sometimes fascinating. I don't know why, but sometimes I learn something new. People with short attention spans can always skip past those parts.

    Hahahaha! I absolutely love that "Smokeless Grill" and plastic TV EOL idea! It has to be the "boy inside the man" thing! It still makes me laugh out loud, when I see your EOL's! "That blowed-up real good!" 😁😊😉 Nice little RCA KCS100B, I have one, in red, with the swivel stand complete. 20:30 Do any of the converter boxes have a B&W RF option? If the color signals are causing some of that buzzing, it might help.

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Most of the buzzing probably is caused by a wide bandwidth audio demodulator, reaching down in response well into the colour subcarrier area and probably also into the video as well. Most likely the major cause is leaky interstage coupling capacitors and bad power supply capacitors.

    The "restore" and "rejuvenate" type functions tend to be temporary unless you're waking up a good but long-unused older B&W tube's cathode for the first time after lengthy storage. The remove G1 shorts is usually permanent unless the tube is very old and/or the gun structure is coming apart. It is usually just a small flake that once you blast it, if the CRT is otherwise showing strong, will lead to good service life.

  • @gerardcarriera7052

    Those little TVs from the mid 50s on are famous for bad caps. Not only age but all those tubes confined to such a small space causes it to be a miniature toaster oven. I'm shocked it has a power transformer! Usually those little sets are series string, hot chassis "gutless wonders" to keep weight and more importantly; production costs down. Looking forward to the next installment!

    I know this video was posted a while ago but I couldn't resist commenting to my mate about those two adverts, back-to-back, featuring products which they claim to be something they aren't.
    .. Jeez you suffer the same sort of commercial crap as us but on steroids .. thanks for keeping us informed! I no longer feel hard done by with our comparative lack of TV/radio channels.
    Really enjoyed seeing this brought back to life, what a fantastic result so far (prior to the next video).
    ↓ This is what I mean by those ad references, if I'm actually wrong about what frying is, let me know, I probably won't bother to respond though ↓
    Smokeless "barbecue" which extracts all that smoke which is traditionally meant to flavour the meat and add some "atmosphere" to the -outdoor- occasion?
    An air "fryer" which, everyone with a modicum of intelligence, knows is an oven??

    The weakened early-plastic form that holds the deflection-yoke coils in place could disintegrate from the heat of the CRT, causing those coils to unravel. It would be advisable to replace the wax paper caps that handle higher voltages, since they're the ones that are under the most stress. Those oil-filled caps need immediate replacement because of the distinct possibility of them shorting and damaging adjacent circuits.

  • @kaa522
    @kaa522 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    A possibility is that something, maybe some of the cathode material flaked off and when you carried it the material created the short in the tube. Back in the day I used to have more luck clearing shorts lasting than rejuvenation for low emission. Heater/cathode shorts were best handled by an isolation transformer much safer then pushing the big button. I have 3 of these little sets Red, White, Black, I restored the red one years ago....as I remember it required quite a bit of profanity. I would say no one should make this set their first TV restoration. But the little set produces a great picture very stable and good contrast and brightness. This is a much better set than the little GE 9 inch of the same era.

    I had one of those as a kid, back in 1963. Hot chassis set if I remember. Maybe not, is that a power transformer in the back? 6U8=6GH8=6EA8 ad nausum. Lots of similar numbers for those triode-pentodes. CRT looks like an ion trap job. I'm no expert, but I think you'd have a better chance of long term fixing a G1 short on a CRT than a heater to cathode short. Also in fixing the heater to cathode short, it's more likely the patient would die on the operating table.

    Did they really make those as late as 1962? I've got a Consumer Reports from 1963 with a story on small plastic sets that are about half the depth of that beast and of course much lighter (not that all of them would have lasted as long). I'll bet this was their "economy" model if it was still sold in the early 1960s.

    25:37 - and the secondary infant mortality begins. That TV is considered by some people as "a lunchbox" model.
    If you do an EOL with a smokeless grill, I look forward to seeing it.

    lol I knew short clear button stabbing was going to happen but it still made me laugh like hell :D as for the G1 shorts, i've heard from radio hams that have got cheap transmitting tubes due to grid shorts and used a high voltage capactior to clear the short and used them for years afterward without trouble... could have been a grid wire that broke and was making contact that got burned off when clearing the short... performance might not be as good as new if that is the case but probably very negligable degrade. your thought about running it for a while is good idea.

    4K is better, resolution is why! Taryton cigarette reference. 😁. 4K The next best thing to being there. Bell System reference. These are great sets although VERY painful to work on, like you knoted in your alknowosis.

    A good thing would be to recap it since its physically in a good state with the hopes of you one day stumbling across another picture tube or another of these TVs that might be cheap cos its rusty but the tubes ok

    18:01 Definitely a permanent fix, since the little chunk of stuff that got lodged between the G1 and cathode structures and shorted them got zapped to bits by the multiple charges ;-) from your CRT rejuver, and since the set was on it's face when you zapped it, whatever bits of stuff that got blown out from between G1 and cathode most likely fell down through the neck and into the main body of the CRT, far away from the gun area.... the little remaining micro-bits probably made little microscopic dings in the screen phosphors when they landed... lol :-D

    iPad Pro; the big one. On full screen; so the 4K is actually doing something (it’s not a full 4K display but it’s better than 1080p).

    I'm 60, and although I actually enjoy & use a lot of the things phones can do these days, video watching is NOT one of them. Desktop 4K monitor here.
