Great video, I'm actually going to purchase an emerald 39 to replace my Eshopps S300. I assume the first step is to drain down the main tank a little bit so it is below the overflow level?
A drainage reservoir where water collects. A pump returns the water FROM the sump. In this case a sump is being used for filtration but not all sumps are filters.
Jason Delaney the vast majority are filters. Actually probably all of them. Never even heard of people using them just as a drainage reservoir. Sounds basically pointless and a waste of space. Not to mention the money and/or time to build one wasted.
@@justinw.2376 Aquaponics systems and very large aquariums use them for excess water storage all the time and it has nothing to do with filtration and everything to do with needing to store a lot of water. Think how much water would overflow from a 1000+ gallon tank when the power goes off...
Hey, what are the dimensions of the sump? I got handed down equipment and i cant even take me motor off my canister cuz its old and i dont wanna break it. I want an upgrade so i can potentially upgrade to saltwater when i have enough money
I have been through a ton of sump videos and this is by far my favorite one. you have given me numerous ideas on what to do with my brand new Trigger 34 :) i do have a question....My 75 gallon tank has a wood plank down the middle. Do you know if it's safe to remove that in order to put my sump under my DT?
I have many questions - Is a sump a good idea for a freshwater tank? How does a sump work? You used a lot of terms in this vid referring to parts and stuff: what are all these things and what do they do, and really: how does this whole thing work, anyway? Maybe you could just do a "sumps for dummies" vid? Sorry to be such a noob.
GoodGod I would never purchase anything from "BigAls" after watching this video. Look at all that salt in the stand! Neglect a tank, i'm sure they neglect their business.
+Andrew Hales - First off, love your photo. Secondly, you're assuming that the tank was ours. And you know what happens when you assume? You make-- wait, how does the saying go? Forget it. Thanks for your comment and opinion, but fortunately (for us, not for you) you're incorrect. We have a huge number of incredibly well-maintained aquariums and terrariums all around our office; many of which you can see in our videos! We don't neglect our pets, our tanks, or our business. Purchase from us or not, that's the truth :)

I'm sorry, I'm very curious and I don't know if this is a stupid question, but what's a SUMP?
