    Hi folks! I know a lot of my viewers won't be interested in the details of my trailer upgrades, but "A LOT" of you said you were. So for those that are interested...here you go! Cat, get a piece of scratch paper and calculate just how much power draw you'll ever imagine using yourself. That should help determine how much Amp Hours you'll need for your battery bank. Try to avoid overkill on the number of batteries you end up getting. If you plan it right, you can design the setup expandable thus saving money, weight and space.

      Thank you for these the way you are doing them. Bob Wells just did a comparison of some lithium batteries and it is great to see the quality come up and price come down. That video also had some serious considerations about lithium and freezing temps. You might want to learn this for when you get out in temps near the freezing point. Just a thought. So much to learn, but you can do it. Especially with Dan's help. Most of us do not need to know the details much more than what an installer should be doing correct and one we can trust. You found a gem. And we need to know how to use without damaging the set up and what the limits are. Even as you spend a lot and expand to the most your trailer can hold it will never be unlimited like a home. solar still requires trade offs and monitoring. You might get AC but it will drain the batteries fast and cause more charging cycles to wear out your batteries. Nice to have when it is life or death but go easy on it daily. Realistic expectations are what matters really.

      @@markpashia7067 The only time cold Temps are an issue with lithium batteries, is if you are in Temps below 10F. The battery will discharge down to 0F, and charge down to an internal battery temp of 32F. I have my batteries in an outside compartment and have been down to 8 degrees and the internal battery temp is still above 32 degrees. Plus the battery will stop the charging if it ever did get to 33 degrees. Cat will most likely never be in an are that cold to be an issue.

    Catherine and Dan, thank you for the very informative videos. I recently purchased a Keystone fifth wheel with the inverter prep. Just wondering if I am correct in that the input side of the transfer switch has the shore side of the inverter prep wire and the output of the inverter and the output of the transfer switch is wired to the inverted outlets. Also, you mentioned that the transfer switch needs to match your shore power. Mine is 50 amps. Just a bit confused on that because the inverter loop wire is 12/3 so it wouldn't seem that there would be more than 20 amps flowing through that wire. I really appreciate you passing on all of your knowledge.

    • @ontheroadwithdan5571
      @ontheroadwithdan5571 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Renogy 2000 watt inverter we installed is a pure sine wave inverter. All and any electronics run perfectly fine with the cheaper modified sine wave inverters. The only items you really need a pure sine wave inverter for are the microwave and air conditioning. I ran a modified sine wave inverter from 2005 to 2013 and the only thing I burned up was my microwave. Laptop, phones, desktop, etc have a power supply with a transformer, which provides isolation from any possible effects of a modified sine wave.

    • @ontheroadwithdan5571
      @ontheroadwithdan5571 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Victron is not better or worse than Renogy. But Victron is 2 to 3 times more expensive. The reason the Victron was removed is because it was maxed out with the 200 watt existing solar panel. We needed a much larger, 40 amp, solar controller for the 620 watts of solar now on the roof.

    • @schulmane
      @schulmane 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dan is proving the value of knowledge. By sharing it. Cat, as Dan says, you really want to go lithium ASAP. But, those batteries need to be very well-protected. Let's just say that lithium and water don't play well together! As for how much power you need, remember the "power" law: P (Watts) = I (Current(Amps)) X Voltage. As an example of the wiring "accessories" need, my 100 watt ham radio shortwave transceiver pulls 20A on transmit. So, I have the wiring (2 conductor #14) for that professionally installed from engine compartment into the luggage area of my car. (Radio is remotely controlled.) Also, watch the grounding! Grounding is super critical. In my case, I have to have additional grounding to prevent "RF feedback" when I'm on-air. Watch how Dan seals everything ujp. And, be ready to maintain those seals as they can deteroriate. This was a great inforfmative video!

      @@johnpinckney4979 Yes LFP and LiFePO4 are the same thing, and what the solar/RV industries usually mean when they say "lithium battery". The lithium batteries in EVs are different but much of that industry is transitioning to LFP too, as it's safe, cheap, and doesn't contain cobalt or nickel. The drawbacks are that LFP is heavier and bulkier than those chemistries that catch on fire, and LFP can't be charged below freezing so such use requires self-warming batteries, which uses a bit of their capacity. Thank you both for your time making this informative video. Catherine or Dan….in the video you mentioned the microwave was wired differently and would not be included with the inverter power once installed. My question is….where or how did you wire the microwave to tie it into the power inverter system? I am guessing that you might have tied it into an outlet. Just want to pick your brains for information. Lol.
    Thank you both.

      Please never look at the wiring in your car or home, it would be very disturbing for you. I was an electrician and I know the electrical code quite well. All throughout your car, the positive and negative wires insulation is touching, literally 100s of feet worth of touching, in your car! The hot and neutral and ground wires throughout your house are are wrapped tightly together. This is very safe and is what the electrical code allows. You car, your house, and Cat's new trailer are all perfectly safe.

    transfer switch is NOT necessary if you buy a good inverter.. for example PowMR 3000w 24v all in one.. takes shore/generator power in, AND PV solar in .. and can prioritize what it uses.. as well as allowing bypass to power everything from grid as well as charging the batteries at the same time.. its a 500.00 inverter and is amazing.. i have it setup in my 36ft pioneer.. with 1kw of solar panels, and 2x 200ah 12v lifep04 in series for 24v .. all told was under 2200.00 and mine is installed in that same storage area up front :)

    Cat, did Dan consider just mounting the inverter hooked to the batteries with a 30 amp plug, hard wired in, where you can just plug in the cord on the camper? That way you don’t need a transfer switch, and when you plug it in, everything in the camper that will run with the 2,000 watt inverter will be powered up. Happy camping!

    Thanks for the great video - I have a similar configuration (pre-wire) in my Keystone trailer. I'm curious what y'all did to get the microwave onto the inverter side. I would like to eventually get my microwave and AC both powered by the inverter, but obviously don't want to have a loop with the converter. Manual converter bypass seems like the easiest solution. Anyone have recommendations?

    Great video! I didn't see or hear anything about sizing your batteries. In order to run an inverter like yours, 2000 watt. The the amp hour of total battery size needs to be at least 10% of the inverter output. IE: min. 200 amp hour battery output.

    I would suggest a 80 amp fuse for the inverter, 190 amp is prettty high up. Depending on what your using of course . But those wire will get pretty hot with 190 amps

    So, I was listening to a RV specialist on youtube and he said that a butt load of manufacturers has a recall coming out in July. Your brand and a whole host of others are going to get a letter. It had to do with your connection to your propane, the fitting is known to crack and leak.

    Installation looks good except for the inverter fuse is supposed to be at the battery. If the positive inverter lead were to short at the through-trailer penetration, you'd have extreme current & heat & could melt cables & cause a fire. I see this a lot on you tube channels & is incorrect installation.

    Great Video. Only cautionary comment I would make is Dan has the fuse in the wrong location. That large fuse he placed at the inverter should be as close as possible to the batteries. I noticed in a shot at 11:25 that the positive cables come straight off the battery and go into the trailer. If there is a short anywhere between the positive lug and that fuse, it will absolutely melt and possibly catch fire.
