    This story of nursing a broken aircraft home is very inspirational. A-10 pilots make great motivational speakers, Mike Drowley with his TED talk also worth listening to. Thanks for this.

    Growing up near Fort Drum formerly Camp Drum NY we were used to A10's flying over and making bomb and gun runs. The A10 has a distinct whine that is unique and we could hear the cannon 20 miles away. The road to the range would be closed but we could be within a half a mile and I was always so amazed to watch them come in real low then peal away at 90 degrees and coming around again for another run. Amazing.

    Kim is definitely the female Top Gun of the A10 squadrons.

    I remember being a kid and watching the green A-10s flying over a parade I went to. Probably mid 1980s. They were awesome. Then a few days later they were back low level heading back to Bradley Airport CT from the shore line. Then next time I saw them was in the Marines, they were making gun runs at a range in NC.

    I’ve seen another interview with her in this same office. I didn’t notice the door art on her lower right before. That’s interesting. Above it, the grey panel with the letters FT is from the tail of her A-10 that was damaged. I heard her remark that that aircraft never flew again and was canibalized for spare parts. But I also read that it was preserved and is part of a static display at some airbase.

    Hmmm, I would have thought the answer to "which aircraft would you like to fly" would have been the P-47 Thunderbolt, since the A-10 was the Thunderbolt II and built by the same company (and also well known for air support in WW II, although very good in air-to-air as well). F-35 was a great answer, though, awesome aircraft.

    • @davidsmith8997
      @davidsmith8997 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, that would make sense. But the P-51 is pretty iconic. Given your past experiences, I think she would have enjoyed flying the F-111 at 100' going just a wee bit faster than the A-10 does!

      @KRGruner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davidsmith8997 LOL, or 50'... But don't tell anyone. Regardless, I would have thought she'd at least mention the P-47...

    What a badass, you can tell the respect and love she has for the warthog too (seems to jive with just about everyone who has worked on or flown them.)
    When she started talking about her options after being hit I was like “MANUAL REVERSION!!!” 🤣Yup… on paper that system must have seemed ridiculous initially, with multiple redundant hydraulic systems… but I can’t even begin to count how many stories I’ve heard of people having to use it.
    I know they’re trying to kill the plane (AGAIN) but I hope it continues to soldier on for a bit longer. I can’t really think of any other “modern” aircraft with such a cult following, even in the light of the service trying to kill it multiple times. Everything else is kinda vanilla, it is what it is - the A-10 is something special.

    • @perryallan3524
      @perryallan3524 ปีที่แล้ว

      What she did not tell in this interview was that while the A10 pilots up to then had been trained that the "manual reversion" system existed that A10 pilots were not trained to actually fly the aircraft or land using manual reversion (the aircraft acts a lot different and landings are counterintuitive from normal due to speed requirements). Her assignment after the war was to develop the training program now incorporated into all A10 training to teach A10 pilots to actually fly in manual reversion - and spent time teaching the 1st sets of pilots and other instructors on using it.

    Kim. Congratulations on an amazing carrier. I am glad I ran across your videos, while I was scouring thru the net looking for documentation on the A-10. I was absolutely intrigued on the stories you told and am thankful that you survived to share them with all of us. To get your t-bolt II back to base in somewhat one piece is commendable, that's the sign of a great pilot. I am a pilot too but for RC model aircraft. The A-10 is one of my favorites as I have building one now for about six months. I purchased a set of Keith Sparks plans and short (plastic parts only) a number of years ago. I decided to re- design it using Motion RC's 66" WS Freewing spare parts offerings to incorporate it into my balsa/ply and fiber glass version. It's coming along pretty well. It will be a twin 80MM EDF (electric ducted fan). Check out Motion RC Freewing 80 MM A-10 thunderbolt/warthog II warthog for a nice static model for your garage or office or you and your hubby could fly it too. If you have a lot of photos of your aircraft, you can have a personalized set of decals/finals make up from cali graphs in new mexico. Another new hobby for the whole family. Join the AMA. Thanks for you time. John
