Does someone who, 100% self taught, got to 5k KGS (but has hit a major plateau) have a chance in hell of getting beyond that...? Maybe by playing weekly games with reviews against dan-level players?? Just asking for a friend! Thanks.
Thanks, but you guys are gifted/special etc. Could an adult learner who’s hit a wall at 5k (with no teaching or reviews from stronger players) hope to maybe hit 1D with proper guidance ? (ie regular OTB play and reviews with strong players). Thanks.
The wall doesn't exist. Your opponents at that rank still have weaknesses, and glaringly bad ones at that. Learn to recognize what they are and you'll leave them behind
I would bet that most people are self-taught. I have had exactly one lesson with a Chinese pro player in Chicago. I got the lesson for free because I was one that picked up the pro players at the airport for the Go Congress that year. No one knew he was coming either. he never RSVP. He didn't speak of English, so the lesson was translated. The only other lessons I had was attending the go workshops that year. Now I would say, if you belong to a club that play weekly, sometimes stronger players would watch your games and give feedback. If you play them, then they also review. My drawback is that I play intermittently and I am a poor study. However, I found watching games exposes my bad play and errors in thinking. That is the key to improving, recognizing errors and why they are errors.
I kinda like it, myself. Some of those questions that Dwyrin doesn't necessarily address in his play, but that are good for us lower rank players to know about.
