Theres a bunch of stuff in there I played keys on and programmed too. That box is pretty full: theres a lot of stuff you can't see in the lower layers -- mostly cassettes, a few more vinyl records. Plus theres a bunch of stuff that I dont have copies of (not to mentiom theres other music that were digital/MP3 only anyway)....As far as the EF CD: talk about overplaying lolol....I was just a kid and didnt know any better but I guess its how many of us start out (run before you walk lol)
My approach: I play the song for as many times as need to and improv. At some point I start recording, leaving the good parts and overdubbing the bad ones. Afterthat I gather the lines and play it through, simplifying on the way. And then I record a bunch of takes and stick to the best one and then just remember what I came up with by just repeating it over a bunch of times.
Thank you for sharing this and its similar to the way I do this present day when Im able to record at home and Dropbox parts to clients or on my own stuff. Occasionally, Ill use a bass VSTi and program the parts first, mostly out of convenience to audition all the ideas in my head.....Never had those luxuries back in the old days: Somebody was paying me and paying studio time by the hour so I had to think of a part on my feet and get it tracked in one take (two or three at the most). Theres been a few times when I heard the track later and would think "Aw man, I should have done instead"
Cool video my friend! I had a drummer buddy of mine way back, open my eyes about coming up with guitar parts. Especially lead parts. Yep! A drummer of all people! 😂 We were writing a couple of songs and I got caught in the “shred” trap and just stacking riffs. He said “no doubt you can play fast and make it sound pretty dang good. But, what is it you’re trying to say? If your strings were your vocal cords, what would you want to tell me.” It was like it finally clicked! Now, I don’t think I could even play fast for the sake of fast anymore. I’m always thinking “use your words”. I’m still no Gilmour though. 🤷🏼♂️
Thats because we grew up in that "more is less" school of playing, back when Yngwie and Frank Gambale were pushing the shred envelope and were setting the bar
LOL....I write by music theory/chord construction.....In studio situations, I hear what a person or client wants, listen to a scratch track or what is already down........if they haven't charted it out or numbers beforehand, I chart it out, and listen in my head to the possible melodic basslines or vocal harmonies.....Besides, root-3-5 on one instrument is gonna be root-3-5 on almost any musical instrument lol...if I play the notes C -E-G-B-D in a phrase, it can be interpreted as a CMaj9
Weirdly enought, this bass has had only three owners, with me as three, and I knew the other two: the original owner actually lived on my street....anyways, for whatever reason, the Original owner tried to repaint it the same color with some awful paint back about '89 or '90 or so....why he did this is anyones guess.....the second owner, who is one of my closest friends, used it for decades until he started using a Stingray about 2015 or so.......my friend is a great guy but very slack with instrument care (hope he isnt reading this lol)....he sometimes takes a bass to a gig with no case or gigbag
The David Gilmore/Mike Mills analogy is spot on!
Ya. Now here I go back to the early REM albums.
Totally! And Mike Mills deserves the love, great musician!
Funny that this video neither overexplains nor underexplains your central idea. How fitting. 10/10 fricheks
Thank you! That's a lot of fricheks!....I'm honored
Loved seeing the Electric Flame CD in your bin. I just bought that CD on eBay a few weeks ago, I lost my old copy.

WTG, Spazz!!!!! I always tried to do that with my guitar solos. Less for me was always more.

loved the demo of overexplaining.
lol...thank you thank you....and always nice to see you
Great video! I appreciate all the editing that has gone into it. 👍
Love the tone of that P bass too😊
Thanks......although they take a long time to do, I get a lot of enjoyment and artistic satisfaction doing my videos this way
GREAT VIDEO!! More people need to know about you! God bless you fellow bass player!

Great , love the video characters you do too 😂
Thank you....just trying to be a little different than other bass channels
@@Rib13Bass thanks very entertaining ,l laugh alot and your playing is outstanding too
right on
Your best video yet. Well done. I'd add Eric Judy (Modest Mouse) in the mix as a bassist that fits in the category.
Good call!.....and thank you for watching and the awesome compliment
Great vid! My David Gilmore is Tony Levin!
On Stick!
I need to get better at making my own bass lines I subscribed to your channel
Thank you very much
Dig it. Simon Gallup from The Cure is another I'd throw in there for sing songy bass parts. Duff too.
Great picks! There's a bunch others, too, like Peter Hook and Chris 2 from AntiFlag but I couldn't mention everybody lol

@@Rib13Bass You know it, man! Back when I was young, dumb and….you know the rest. Now I’m more like “You kids get off my lawn!” 😂
How do ya make Chords FROM BassLines, please?
Not the other way 'round!
