The song is about racism and police brutality (was written after the beating of Rodney King).
"Some of those who work forces.... Are the same that burn crosses" is referencing members of the (government) forces that are members of the KKK.
"You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites" implies that police killings are justified and that the police are above the law.
"And now you do what they told ya" people lay down, and go along with the racism and brutality because they have been conditioned to comply.
"F you I won't do what you tell me." is resistance to and not accepting racism and police brutality.
In concert he often changes the line "Some of those who work forces" to '"Some of those who hold office".
Good breakdown, though I think "work forces" is specifically police, as the organization was originally created to break strikes and bust unions.
And yeah he often changed "work forces" to "hold office" in concerts
The amount of conservative, blue-lives-matter fools who think this song is *for* them is insane. Talk about media illiteracy.
You had to use F for “fuck” about a Rage song? That’s weird. And those Captain Obvious explanations…
@@DanielMennel Thought it was "some of those who burn crosses are the same that hold office." Politicians being former police or connected to police, while fucked, isn't a secret or anything. Accusing (or rather outing) politicians as being white supremacists on the other hand strikes a bit deeper
As an old man now, I can say that in my younger days, RATM always allowed me to show rage for the right reasons. I continue to believe fully in the message that they were spreading. We need more of this rage today! Great reaction ❤
Agree!
Indeed!
Amen, we need a lot of that energy now
Old woman here, yessss
They were good, but they are now all about bending over for the machine 😂😂
With what is going now in the USA right now, this song is more and more real than ever
I won't do what they tell me.
Its all over the western world
Too bad they became what they raged against.
@svenrn3545 What are you talking about?
This song is specifically about police brutality...do you think they became abusive cops???
Do you think they joined the "forces" and started to "burn crosses"???
truth get off your asses 19 year old elon disciples are taking over
From a 64yr grandmother Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes ❤❤❤❤
Same, from this 57-year old Nana. This is the shit that still gets me up and head banging. Every time.
@@TheForestCrone 51 y/o lady who had to jump up and dance as soon as that bassline began.
You must have some proud grandkids. I wish I had a grandma that listened to music like this. my grandma was cool and one of the sweetest ladies I've ever known, but if she listened to stuff like this it would be amazing
@STRAIGHTJXCKET Cheers... Can you believe my kids are 'straighty 180'.. (Aussie slang for straight) they think I'm uncouth 😯😂
Rage was a group of men that all had master’s degrees in different fields. They were very smart and chose to take their talents to the music scene hoping to make a difference
It’s also pertinent that Zach De La Rocha’s grandfather, and Tom Morello’s father were revolutionaries. The former in Mexico in the early 1900s, and the latter in Kenya in the 1950’s
Yeah, I always like it when someone accuses Tom Morello of being a stupid musician not realizing he's a Harvard graduate in political science.
You're so right. Zach means the shit he says a lot more than most vocalists mean what they say.
Zack is a real artist and real human being - spitting truth.
This is the shit I live for. people finding out Rage Against the Machines Message.
Fuck yeah brother
you do know that Rage has now aligned themselves 100% with the "machine" they once "raged" against? they live off the teet of the Democrat Party, they are hypocrite fools
lol. They’re sellouts. Wanting you to be “fully vax-ed “ to attend their shows. 🤡
You dicovered them, does not matter when, the fact you have is all that matters. Brought me through my teenage angst years and I still love them now in my 50s. Top review my man 🤘🤘
Authenticity is one hell of a drug.
Rage is more relevant today than ever! Spit that truth, Zach! And I’m late 60s. 😊
Theres a clip of them performing this song on an english tv station and were asked not to curse. You can guess what happened next.
it was even a bit better than that, at the time folks were fed up with manufactured pop (like from x factor) so there was a campaign to get this song to the top of the uk charts for christmas, it became our christmas number 1, gave us the clip you mention and upset a lot of conservative people (while also raising money for charity along the way :)
Down Rodeo, Testify, Bombtrack. So many to list
"Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" is how we all feel in a capitalistic, hierarchy of lies. 🤷♂️
They're making money out of TH-cam, right? That looks pretty capitalistic to me.
@Alexis40ar Who RATM? All their music came out long before TH-cam existed so no. But you clearly don't know what you're talking about. I mean do you think anit capitalistic means zero income? 🙄
Seeing RATM and Wu Tang in Indianapolis in 96 still ranks as one of the greatest shows I’ve ever seen!
"Calm like a bomb" is a must, BTW TooL and Rage are friends and have performed together before, Maynard was featured on the song Know your Enemy and Adam and Tom are good friends. So yeah Rage is an amazing band too just like TooL just a different style they have with the music and message they bring.
If I remember correctly, Adam’s mom was Tom’s 5th grade teacher!
Either “Know Your Enemy” or “Bombtrack” should probably be the next song of theirs that you react to!
A few years ago this was No:1 in the UK at Christmas. Because normally in the UK at Christmas time we have stupid novelty songs. So the country decided "not this year" and everyone went out and bought this song. It messed up so many radio shows and the live broadcast on Christmas day, it was fun.
So many good songs to choose from with Rage. Sleep now in the fire, ghost of Tom joad, know your enemy, wake up, testify. To name a few lol! Definitely worth a deep dive
This music is more relevant now than ever before
In 1997 I was grounded in high school twice. Once for being home too late from a Tool concert and the other was from a Rage ATM concert. I would rinse and repeat all over again and they are still two of my favorite bands. Tool edges out because its something I can go to to get focused while RATM is kickass at the gym!
Word.
Anybody else wanna march down the streets with Rage blaring in the background
always
I’m down
My list of vital rage songs:
No shelter
Wake up
Down rodeo
Township rebellion
Guerrilla radio
Vietnow
Know your enemy
Take the power back
And the official video of "sleep now in the fire" directed by michael moore.
Always with lyrics to read along.
✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼✊🏻❤️
Rage is one of the most unique and influential bands ever.
Awesome reaction 🎉I’m 54 and wish I could hear this again for the first time ❤️🤘🏼
That vibe is Zacs intentions- he really means what he says
90's had some bad ass music....on all genre's
It never gets old hearing them!!
I wish their songs to be irrelevant.
I’m getting goosebumps watching you react to this song for the first time!!! The feeling, the meaning, the message of rage is undeniable and all consuming! Love watching you share in the experience. We need their music now more than ever!!
Listen to "down rodeo" it will change your life. Rodeo is like "Rodeo drive" the famous shopping area in beverly hills. You need 2 things to listen to a rage against the machine song. A lyrics list, and a history book to understand the references. They go deep.
Some of other great tracks from them - "Know your enemy (Features Maynard from Tool)", "Bullet in the head", "Down Rodeo", "People of the sun"
Keep going down the Rage rabbit hole brother you get it
Zack told yall almost 30 years ago now we can all see it in full effect
TOOL and Rage being btb groups of the year is just how I was raised. Welcome to the party
The fact that this song is written about the Rodney King beating still gives me chills! Like thank you so effin much for this!!!❤
They need to come back because their music inspires me to stand my ground for my rights!!!!
Top 10 albums of all time for me... I grew up on this. Fun fact.... guitarist Tom Morello is related to Barrack Obama and the band Audioslave is Rage Against the Machine with Chris Cornell singing.
Really loved the reaction. You cannot go wrong with these guys. All three albums were full of bangers. I would recommend "Wake Up", "Freedom", "Guerilla Radio" and countless others.
Down rodeo
Know your enemy
Wake up
Take the power back
Is a must
Who needs coffe when you have Rage Against the Machine? Love this band, People of the Sun is a personal favorite
It's funny how you talk about Tool and Rage. They are connected. Tool guitarist (Adam) and Rage guitarist (Tom) were in a high school band together. Maynerd also played with Rage for a bit but recommended Zack for the singer. Maynard even sings on a Rage song.
I came here to say the very same thing! The rage song that Maynard is on is Know Your Enemy, from their first album
I got to see RATM in August 2022. Lead singer, Zach de la Rocha had injured his Achilles tendon at a prior show. He had to sit on a case the entire show. It was the BEST show I’ve ever been to!
Explosive and dynamic and filled with rage for sure.
My man's face reading the lyrics! I'm dying 🤣
I enjoyed the hell outta this reaction video, Jay feeling that energy we got so many years ago when Rage dropped.
Rage will definitely be your group of your year! Great reaction! ✌️
This is by far the best ever Christmas number 1. 2009 UK charts 😂
That was a truly historic time!
That whole album is amazing.
Killing In the name was a single..
Love this group, so authentic and eye opening if you listen to the lyrics.
My brotha WELCOME to Rage, now I'm just a 54yo white boy but they were my jam back in the 90's because then like now I'm a rebel with an attitude and I absolutely loved your reaction especially when you watched Bulls On Parade that song still gets my blood pumping and that shits almost 30yo. keep it going and once again WELCOME to the Rage.
7:25 - this seems to need context - yes, it's about telling it to the man, but back then, this was about the Rodney King riots and about police brutality, you might be familiar with this concept being brought up by BLM. As long as money rules, things won't change.
This song came out after the Rodney King beating in LA in the 90's. Its a commentary on police brutality.
They have a huge catalog and Tom Morello is a legendary guitarist.
Check out Guerilla Radio and Testify!
Thank you so much for sharing that. Appreciations as this song also was on the charts twice. It is real. =)
Rage is definitely 2025s vibe for sure 🙌🏻
You NEED to check out "Know Your Enemy"!
Watch the original video for “Freedom,” the song is about a family friend, Leonard Peltier, and tells the story how he was done dirty by the Feds! I’m 57, RATM’s first album still gets me hyped today. ❤❤❤
That crazy guitar riff at the end....
Yes i watched the first video and yes im watching this one too, cant wait for the next one
I love your reaction to Rage! It's one of my favorite reaction videos 😊😅❤
Renegades of Funk by Rage please!!!! 💜🤘
Wax - Red. Wax is hands down the best underrated musician in my lifetime. I've driven hundreds of miles to see him. I know for a FACT you will be obsessed. I've been listening to him everyday for over 10 years. Everything he does is gold.
*This is the music you wanna listen to before you go to a protest.*
"Those who died are justified
For wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
You justify those that died
By wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites"
This song was deeply influenced by the Rodney King beatings. Definitely check out the lyrics. I could tell you weren't catching them. You're missing out the best part. BTW Rage is one of the most political band of that time. Racism and runaway capitalism were common topics for songs.
Still one of my favorite bands and one of the best concerts at Turtle Bay, North Shore. When I first started teaching in the mid 90's we went on strike for weeks, we picketed and made our protest posters listening to RATM. These lyrics are still so meaningful today.
Calm Like a Bomb is where you want to look for Zach being a legend.
If you like Tool, Maynard has guest vocals on Know Your Enemy by Rage which is in the pantheon, so might want to check it out.
A few years ago they performed this song on national daytime TV here in UK. They were supposed to change the "F you I won't do what you tell me" line. Of course, they didn't. They got about 3 repetitions in before they were cut off.
The TV presenter apologised for the language and said: "We told them not to do it but they did it anyway." And it's like DUH! 😁
Just in case you dont know this, in 2009 this song was the christmas number 1 in the UK after a campaign to stop a talent show winner getting it (yet again) which succeeded. RATM then donated the sales proceeds to charity
Saw them live in 1997 in West Palm Beach, FL. Incredible show. Vietnow sticks out as my favorite song at that show. Also, Wu-Tang opened for them so I was in heaven as a 16-year-old hip hop kid
Fantastic reaction as usual!
Great review.
My favorite RATM song is "Renegads of funk."
It's inspiring and the video pays homage to so many great renegades and artists of the past.
Another great video brother. Keep up the good work.
Keep up the good work,,
Really appreciate your reactions to the music
Maynard from Tool does guest vocals on the Rage song "Know Your Enemy" If they are your favorites, you will LOVE that song
They speak the truth. I'm so grateful for body cams, they protect everyone. Rage has never shied away from controversary, in fact they jump right in. They are RIGHTEOUS! We needed their honesty then, and we need it now.
You need to listen to all of there songs with lyrics up. One of the best lyricist of my life.
Some say Rage was a staple of rock rap and a big foundation of Nu-Metal, which helped the rise of bands like linkin Park, Limpbizkit, System of A down and many more bands of the late 90s and early 2000's. Tom Morello (rages guitarist) would in later years collaborate with Linkin Park on an instrumental song.
Watch their live performances from 93. He's wearing a green shirt... you'll get a feel for how they really were. Saw them live around 1998... crazy.
This track was the band’s big time breakthru. And for damn good reason. Can’t really forget bars like that- esp not the final section where Zack just🖕the whole time. Rage remains 1 hell of a group 2 this day.
great song, I appreciate the enthusiasm.
Since Rage is your group of the year, you are my first new sub of the year. Looking forward to your journey.
Oh wait.... I was already subbed 😂
Love your reaction! RATM is 🔥
The way I see this song as I have grown older and wiser is that it is an Anthem against 2 important concepts regarding our modern world.
1. The function of a military industrial complex that sends heroes to die for the benefit of fools.
2. The banality of evil concept. See: the stanley milgram experiments. People were willing to potentially kill a participant in a quiz game, so long as an authority figure was there to accept all responsibility, and abdicate them from repercussions. "The experiment must continue" is usually all the scientists needed to say.
Obviously the experiment was fake, and the electric shock was non existent. In some ways, it is sort of viewed as one of those psychology experiments where it was like: duhhhhhh, and don't do that again.
❤❤❤ welcome to the family
This band here. The lead singer has spoken to the U.N. and the guitarist graduated from Harvard.
I think Audioslave should fall under Rage for your journey
That was Tom Morello and Chris Cornell, correct? And of course the drums and bass player who I forget.
@ yessir
Down Rodeo
(Zach is the best front man ever walked on this earth)
Great reaction! I've enjoyed both of your Rage reactions so far. I want to point out, because you said "Bulls On Parade" sounded like a WWE wrestler's entrance music, that this song is actually the song that inspired DX, a.k.a., Degeneration X's entrance music. The guy who sings that song even tries to sound like Zack. On this song Zack says "Now you do what they told you", on the DX song he says "You think you can tell us what to do."
Stank face riff 10/10
He's preaching without the religion part. You could also see it as protest chants. Maybe it's a combination of those. And great music helps getting your message out there. Even if you're just rocking out to them, you're still getting their message. Very powerful.
Down Rodeo is one of the greatest tracks of all time, you gotta bump that shit for us!
This whole album was an experience
He was deep and authentic, Dude
Oh on my list they've always been ahead of tool. Baselines hard, Morello a genius on guitar, Zach's voice not as melodic but dropping truth bombs, gov. facts, social commentary
They used their platform! Didnt waste it on bragging about their Bentley, their designer stuff, their women.
The cd cover of the strong minded monk is a real footage he set him self on fire in front of the public and did not even scream or move the monk is real strength in the mind
RATM is one of my fav bands all the time, born 1979 :)
Down Rodeo, Fist full of Steel, Calm like a Bomb... and almost every other song they did tbh! 😂
waking up to this is better than coffee 💪🏻
Leonard Peltier gets to go home!!!
RATM "Down Rodeo" will absolutely blow your mind
🤘🤯🤘
Know Your Enemy. Great song
