For me it works then I get to the part where I need to compress the folder and its not even an option I see 7-zip and compress and email but not the normal compress option that you have is there any programs i need to install to make this to work? (Im trying this with better end)

i founded it at the end, you just need to install java and use open with java on winrar mod files

Thanks man, you are a life saver! I screwed around with updating 20.4 mod to 20.5 for half an hour, dug up a 12 year old forum thread, but you shown everything in 2 minutes! Although, i'd add that you can directly open .jar files with winrar, and edit everything without even extracting the files
you can indeed do that, altho winrar isnt preinstalled on windows, and editing files inside of zip files doesnt work by default in windows, hence i chose to showcase the more 'vanilla' option

Guys, this works only if you're changing versions within 1.17-1.20.x or below 1.17 versions.
This is because mods before 1.17 required JDK 8 to operate, mods on 1.17.x-1.20.x require JDK 16 or 17.
(Minecraft below 1.17 require Java 8, 1.17-20.x - Java 16/17. Not like Forge and Fabric have any choice.)
And the incompatibility arises from different Java versions and overall different mod structures.
This might work on Forge too, but idk.

@@ItIsJan actually, I just checked, Minecraft 1.17 works fine with Java 17.
Which means, the only barrier that exists in Minecraft modding, is the version 1.17.
Everything below is operated under Java 8, everything else - under Java 17.

Few Things To Note
If The Mod Requires a Library you cannot do this
This doesn’t work if unless change is from 1.17 - 1.20 (I have attempted to port mods before, including mine, sometimes it’s a nightmare even with the source code)
yes, since mods previous to 1.17 used java 8, this will probaply not work with this big differences (especially not mixins!)
libraries arent *technically* an issue as long as you can backport them aswell

I'm trying to move a mod from 1.19.3 to 1.20.1, and it's not working, is 1.19 to 1.20 incompatible?
when you put everything in the new folder and name it .jar do you seperate it from the folder and put it in the mods folder
you dont name the folder .jar, you convert it back into a zipe file and name that into .jar. and yes, then you take out that jarfile and put it into your mods folder

tbh havent done anything with forge yet, but you will probaply not be able to do it with version changes that big. 1.7.10 to 1.8.9 might be possible but again, i dont use forge

heropack.json is not what you are meant to open, its fabric.mod.json
where do you get the unzipped folder?

the game thinks 1.19.3 to 1.16.5 is a big gap for mods (or its just bc this method dosent work to downdate a mod)

I need some help. I tried changing BerdinskiyBear's ArmorHUD Mod to make it for 1.20.2, but when I run minecraft, the mod is not working at all.
it's a simple trick, it may not work in most scenarios
its saying the "scena" and "Saecularia Caudices" isnt the right version, i checked i never had anything named that and found it was in the json, im not sure how to fix that or if it even can
context is important. is this an error ocurring when you start your ported mod, its probaply a dpendency issue mod1 depebds on mod2 to work but mod2 is now a different version

When i go to change the mod back to a jar file at the end, it does not work, staying as a zip and just putting .jar after the name.
enable file extentions in your windows file explorer settings (look it up if you dont know hot to)
Now try using a 1.12 mod in 1.20. Especially for mods like optifine and sodim.

After some searching around I found people talking about stealing other people's mods is wrong, you can find mods that do the same thing, updating mods requires more than editing just a simple line of text BLAH BLAH BLAH, BRO I GET IT, I UNDERSTAND HOW JAVA AND CODING WORKS, if I'm confident that none of the features a mod introduces or changes between game versions 0.1 and 0.1.1 then just tell me how tf to change the version number if your that scared of people stealing your mods to update them to newer versions then MAYBE YOU SHOULD UPDATE THEM. I get that not all mods are as simple as change "painting A" to "image.png" and many mods do fundamentally break between versions. Take Immersive portals for example, I couldn't even describe how they managed to get that black magic working let alone how they're able to update it faster than most other simple looking mods. Regardless, THANK YOU, YOU ABSOLUTE CHAD!!!
