    OKEEEY, so a couple tips/updates from the comments:
    1. Sparkly/metallic thread is the DEVVILLL. 😂
    2. Using yarn instead of floss with a knit sweater like this would've looked more cohesive.
    3. Ya don't gotta use all 6 threads.
    4. Interfacing on the inside makes working with stretchy fabrics way easier! (def doing that next time!)
    Thanks for the tips/tricks guys! I'm excited to explore the world of embroidery! 😊

      To fix where the hair brush messed up the embroidery you can take your embroidery needle (it should be bigger/thicker than a normal needle) to slid the loop of thread through and pull it to the other side. My mom uses this trick all the time to fix pulls in our sweaters. :)

    It looks so cute, that's too good for a first go what the heck! Just maybe a tip for your future embroidering adventures, usually you don't use the whole six threads at once, most embroidery threads come as six and then you split them up so that you only work with about 2 or 3 at a time. That'll probably be a bit more manageable! Also, it's actually much harder to embroider on stretchy fabric so I'm really impressed, but to make your life easier, you can buy iron on interfacing. It has a shiny side that is glue and you iron it onto your fabric to give it a bit more structural integrity and less stretch, then you embroider. If you want a cheaper alternative to iron on interfacing, attach a non-stretchy fabric (like calico) on the underside of the design, embroider and then cut the excess off. Hope that helps for future use (wow this became long I'm so sorry) :D

    • @cgoiq19
      @cgoiq19 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Jordyn C I always use a soft craft felt for my non-stretchy fabric! It’s cheap and works great for smaller projects (maybe not so much for this giant R 😂)

    • @jordync4577
      @jordync4577 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aw heck that's a really good idea, I'm going to use that next time, thanks! :D However, does it feel kinda thick or bulky afterwards if it's embroidery on a garment or is it good for that too?

    • @rachelmaksy
      @rachelmaksy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Thank you for the tips!!! I figured the 6 threads would make it as thick as I could make it, and I do think it sped it up, but definitely more tangily 😂😂 And the interfacing would've been so much easier!!! I'll keep that in mind for next time! 😊❤️

    Firstly: You have the courage of a true Gryffindor, jumping right into embroidering a knitted jumper. I salute you. Friendly tip from a fellow diy'er: Try using a similar yarn if you're going to embroider a knitted sweater (or knitted anything). Embroidery thread is way to thin to give a nice finish, it's meant for woven fabrics which are usually more firm and structured, plus it will be easier and faster to sew.

    If you ever try this again Imma suggest a nice back stitch (you start coming up at the end of the stitch and go back into the cloth at the beginning) for the outline and then going over that with a satin stitch (basically the stitch you used for this tutorial). Having the back stitch there means the project is A)Neater in general and B)It raises the embroidery up a bit which looks nice. You did a great job, especially since this is your first try. Also I second the thing about using only 2 to 3 threads at a time- it's easier and a bit neater.

    Here's a tip if you still have that metallic embroidery thread and want to use it. Try "couching" stitch with it. Basically you lay it on top of the fabric and tack it down with a more cooperative floss. You get the sparkle without the cursing.

    I started my crafting journey with sewing...then tried my hand at embroidery and made some iron on patches. They were terrible at first...but then when I split my threads and really concentrated on the fabric direction and the threads, it worked really well. It's definitely something you get better at with practice. You start to get the hang of tensions and thickness.

    • @jupiter1217
      @jupiter1217 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@rachelmaksy I know this was 2 years ago, but if you're still contemplating adventures in embroidery, there's also iron-on stabilizer that is water soluble. It will come apart when soaked, and you can pick out the threads that remain. That way you keep the embroidery, but don't have that scratchy stabilizer poking you all the time when you wear it, and your work won't be way stiffer than the rest of the garment.

    it ended up looking quite cute. the wonkiness added a bit of charm to it. i have a bit of experience with embroidery and cross-stitching and the way i was taught, you don't have to use the entire thick rope of thread. you could cut about an arm's length at a time and then separate the big mama thread into the thinner threads it was comprised of. you could just use like two or three threads at a time, depending on how you want it to look and depending on the cloth you're going to embroider. does that make sense??¿? i'm not very good at explaining lol. anyway i'm sure there are youtube tutorials that explain this better. threadwork can be great fun :D

    My two cents: I definitely agree with other commenters that using yarn for this might make it more cohesive. A single-ply or lace-weight yarn should probably make a good substitute for the embroidery floss (if you're worried about threading a needle with something thick you can get a yarn needle, which would be easier to thread and will work fine on a knitted sweater). I'd also suggest that you try to find yarn with a similar fiber content as in the sweater (i.e. 100% wool yarn for a wool sweater, or acrylic yarn for an acrylic sweater, or 50/50% wool/cotton blend, etc.), as that may help reduce issues with mis-matching shrinkage during washing. If you're concerned about catching threads (like in the great brush mishap of '17) you could try swapping the satin stitching used in the video for something more like cross stitch - that can give decent coverage with the color (as long as you have a thick enough strand) without having such long strands available to catch on things.

    • @rachelmaksy
      @rachelmaksy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noted! I quite like how it looks with the floss but yarn would definitely be better, haha.

    I don’t know if anyone has said this yet, but if ever you embroider a sweater like that again it will be VASTLY easier to do if you add some interfacing on the underside first! It’ll keep the fabric and embroidery steady and not stretch all over. 😘 I think for a first time this turned out fantastic. It was super fun to watch!

    You are goals. Severe goals. A little cheat for embroidery on loose knit items is to put a cheap but tightly woven fabric (like scrap of linen or T-shirt material) a bit larger than the thing you are embroidering and passing the thread through both the items fabric and the backing fabric. It helps the embroidery keep a bit better. (I am also a novice embroiderer so if I'm wrong please correct me this is just how I've found the easiest way to do it)

    And even though you probably already got enough tips to make you regret even posting this - here's another one: with thin embroidery thread you get a nice, raised effect if you stitch over something...like the thickest yarn you can find. Lay out the form of the motif with the thick yarn and fix it in place with water soluble glue and then do a satin stich over it....it locks great on bulky materials like knittet sweaters. Love ya!

    For anyone else wanting to try this: it is easier and quicker to use yarn, a yarn needle, and an arrow stitch. It will blend with the sweater nicely and is no big deal if it gets snagged because it’s so easy and quick to do in the first place.

    Art Teacher here- If ya ever decide to create a second one- google 'duplicate stitch'. its done with yarn over top of an existing sweater and it comes out looking like it was knitted into the original piece! The stiteches look like neat little rows of V's.

    I'm in no way a pro, but I started embroidering last year and it's addicting! It's relaxing (kind of, when you're not cursing yourself over a mistake or stabbing yourself with the needle) and now I want to do beautiful delicate embroideries of curse words, dorky puns and at least a thousand patches.

      Doing bold lettering with satin stitch is a bitch (that rhymed), I much rather fill a lined out letter (using stem stitch) with long and short stitch! You're allowed to get messier and it won't end up getting caught in things like it happened with your brush. ☹️ Your work still counts! It was looking good ❤️

    Next time use a fusable interfacing to stabilize the fabric. When you've finished embroidering you can remove any excess. Embroidery should be fun and relaxing so I'm glad you enjoyed it.

    I'm aware that I comment this 4 years after the video was posted.. but just in case someone finds this iniformation usefull: there is an embroidary stitch that mimics the knitted stitches... you sort of follow the yarn in each knitted stitch with your embroidering needle. and I think that would have done a better job here. also using knitting yarn in the same needle strenght of the yarn the sweater was knitted in instead of embroidering yarn. but as with all of her videos, I love her way of doing it. that is what entertains me and lifts my mood.

    I looked at a pick of the sweater , it looks like the R was knitted with yarn , you probably could gotten by with bleaching the R in the sweater. Your first time is really good more you do it the better. 😍I still like the idea . Harry Potter stuff is way too expensive.

    For working on a sweater, you can also use a stitch called "duplicate stitch." It will look like the design is a part of the sweater, knitted in. Have a merry Christmas! 🎄

    OMG. Rachel, good and adorable effort! Now you should try putting a monogram on some of your adorable shirts (like Laverne from Laverne and Shirley, a classic tv show)! That would be adorable. Or send them to me and I’ll embroider them for you. LOLZ.

    So....your sweater looks awesome and you are adorable. Lol It has just the right amount of homemade that it needs. If it looked perfect, like it was machined, it wouldn't be as special. Embroidery is a fun and easy hobby to pick up. Loads of tutorials on TH-cam! And craft stores like Hobby Lobby or Joann's will have kits or iron on patterns to follow. I've got some cute vegetable/herb ones for the kitchen I've been meaning to work on. Just practice stitches with a fun swatch test!

    I embroidered a wolf onto a dress for my Sansa Stark Halloween costume, and can confirm: sparkly thread SUCKS. I have so much of it left and never want to use it again. Another tip I used was to trace the pattern with puffy fabric paint in a matching color first, then stitch over it. This was really helpful as it meant any missed spots weren't as obvious and I could clearly see my design (It was hard to draw on black velvet otherwise). It also helped with the thickness of the design, which I wanted to be kind of 3D. Anyway! That's my two cents.

    You did a great job for a first time, I’d just would have maybe said, interfaced underneath would have held it in place, made it easier to sew, but impressed how well you kept that in shape 🙏 awesome job! ❤️❤️❤️ and metallic /shiny/sparkly threads is the worst to work with, better for smaller work, one strand at a time, and short pieces, still knots up 😂

    Next time it might help to have a supportive fabric in the back of the sweater. You could try embroidering some yarn in the same pattern as it is knit but if you have no experience with knitting that can be difficult. Supportive fabric might be the way to go. Pin the fabric to the sweater before you start. It'll help with the thread not being tight enough.
