  • Buy Organic Seeds here! www.seedsnow.c... Very effective method for compost tea making. Whenever I show other organic gardeners about making this great fertilizer, they always feel it is to much work. Little do they realize how great a stuff it really is. So I have been using the way shown in this video for around a year now. I just connected two ways of making fertilizers and came up with this simple method. This then was to make it much more simple but yet still effective

    How long and how often do you need to stir it?

    • @workwithnature
      @workwithnature  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      We did some tests on stirred vs bubbled compost tea. We found that even once per hour and then for as long as you can do it is fine. The longer you stir the more the microbes multiply. there is a video on the channel about it with video footage using a microscope.

    • @balazstivadar8631
      @balazstivadar8631 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And then how many times is recommended?@@workwithnature

    • @workwithnature
      @workwithnature  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@balazstivadar8631 Between one hour to 8 hours is fine, because you don't dilute the tea. If you think about it one bacteria can multiply 5 million times in 24 hours. But because you have the factor of exponential growth, the extreme multiplication happens further towards the end than at the beginning. The longer the better, but again you are getting some growth at the start and you would use this kind of tea undiluted.

    Amazing, is all I can say. As a little girl my family lived in Ottawa. Our backyard was a dirt patch 20X30 '. At six we moved to a small village south of the city where we had a garden that was about 1/2 an acre. It was wonderful. I learned so much. What an inspirational young man you are. Thanks so much for making these video's.I love that I'm not even a real gardener but I have this incredible urge to run outside and dig something!! I never have enough room to blab on this thing.Later. Cath

    Well the molasses is really great because of all the good stuff taken of the white sugar. Bacteria love this. You could try some agar. But have not used it. I have experimented with blended up comfrey leafs. That made the tea smell real sweet. Any ideas anyone else?

      This is a great video. One thing I do when making compost tea is blow into a 1" pvc tube to inject air right into the deep layer of the compost tea, where all the solid matter settles and where putrefaction is likely to occur. This method isn't for everyone, but it's actually a pretty good lung exercise for me. I just make sure not to inhale from that tube!

    Another great demonstration David! Thumps up for you! I do have a question tough: I see you pour the compost tea in the garden beds you want, but I've heard you can also pour the compost tea on your plants using a sprinkler head on your watering can. In that way the compost tea will form a protective layer on the plants/leaves, making them less vulnerable for pests such as slugs. What is your experience on that?

    Ah got you,
    9 times minimum, over three hours. But to tell you the truth you could use it even right away as it would still have the nutrients from the compost + molasses. But you would not have a large amount of bacteria. I have done 6h before, but any more than that I just put on a pump for over night. So to answer your question. Between 9-18 times for either 3h or 6h 2 stirs every 20 min. The tea smells very sweet after some time. You should always use it fresh and don't stop stirring though

    I like the theory and I think I understand it ... but have you (or anyone else) ever done field trials to measure results? I can find lots of videos on compost tea as well as anecdotal results as to the benefits and I've found only two that did season-long comparative testing. Both of these determined that their was no difference using compost tea. However, these were admittedly backyard gardeners who were well-intended but obviously lacking the resources to control many of the variables. So, are there any credible field tests out there somewhere? And thanks for your efforts of posting this information.

  • @workwithnature
    @workwithnature  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It depends on heat and how fast they eat up the molasses.
    Up to 3 days or less then one day in hot countries.
    Turning of the pump. You usually have some hours. Bacteria do not die, just sleep.
    The main thing is not to allow anaerobic bacteria to grow. These are not so good for the plants. That is why you try to have lots of air in your tea. To get aerobic bacteria.
    Once you stop you do have time, as it would take a long wiles for the anaerobic bacteria to get strong. So up to 5 h is OK.

    I live in Portugal and the only easily available molasses I can find contains sulfur dioxide and sulphites. Would this be "better than nothing" or would it in fact make things worse?
    Also -- after making the big barrel of worm tea (stirring every 20 minutes for 3 hours) how long will the worm tea remain usable, i.e. do I have to use it up within 3 days, or will it remain active for longer periods and I just need to stir it, or add more worm poop and molasses and stir it again. Reading the comments, a lot of people have these questions. Thanks, love your videos, by the way. Also, I'm a fellow countryman who got away from the rain :)

    Around 3:00 he seems to differentiate between worms, perhaps between European earthworms and I think Red Wigglers - the worms that dig and burrow more linearly versus those which spend more time eating up small matter. Red wigglers are commonly used as fishing bait in the United States and those work amazingly well in my buckets.

    Yet another excellent video on a brilliantly simple idea. I agree with everything except for the very end where you say both oil and coal will run out. That is just not the case in any foreseeable future, and big agriculture will continue to poison the planet with it's continued total reliance and overuse of synthetic fertilizers. Thank you for continuing to promote sustainable agricultural practices, it really is just a far better methodology for growing.

    You will have better success with round stick/bamboo for making the whirlpool :) or you could just get an air pump and air stone and leave it for 24 - 36 hours :)
    You can also use kelp and neem and alfalfa meal instead of molasses i heard and neem specifically will help with pest management and rich in nutrients.

  • @workwithnature
    @workwithnature  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No prob hey :)
    The sprinkler works fine if you make the compost tea using a bag and air pump. Or sieve it before use. But here I like to just pore it over plants and really drench the soil. Compost tea works great as a protective film. But only against microbes that would otherwise try to get into your plants. The slugs are to big to be put of by it. I forgot to say in the video, for the protective film you should only put it on the plants, when it is overcast. For the bacteria to stick that is.

    • @maximilian333
      @maximilian333 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Robert Miller My hunch is that either you will revolutionize gardening, or fail spectacularly. A controlled experiment will show you which one. I think doing worm compost, and draining the washout into a separate tea bubbler rig, is a fine approach already. But I wouldn't want to dissuade you from experimenting. Theoretically worms should be able to survive in highly aerated liquid.

      It seems it will go one of two ways. if I want an Organic Certified garden I may have to go with full composted manure for 6 months or more.
      If I'm not going for an Organic Certified garden then it could work as long as my vegetables don't come into contact with the soil. Perhaps the nutrients will be out of phase with what the plants need.
      I am working on a budget method to use a home made colorpmeter or spectroscope to analyze my water solution without having to spend $300 or $400 for each of 3 or 4 meters.

      Sir, that thought seems brilliant. I think I will try it and let you know, since I can only work with 5 gallon buckets.

    Bringing worms up in the garden has lead to skunks and possums digging up the garden for worms as food. I am in a suburban area near the mountain foothills. Have you had to deal with this problem?

      Nope no skunks or possums in Switzerland. My guess is if you have a compost area then have it away from your garden. Since as you say it is a feeding ground for them. Maybe you could fence in your area too. But it really is a new thing for me. Never had to deal with that problem.

      I was going to ask where you were located. You might wish to add your location to your website. I also advocate using the stir method for compost tea if one does not have a bioreactor. Microbe Organics
