C J stood for Cabriolet Junior. Which was base spec convertible - so other than the drop top and 1.4 engine - that was all you got. It was marketed as a good value fun 4 seater cabriolet without any asperations of major luxury. As the far as the Pininfarina conversion was concerned it was very much a follow up to the Talbot Samba Cabrio and shared most of its basic conversion features. When launched they were extremely hard to get hold of such was the demand - and held their value for a good few years afterwards. Still fun cars today if you can find a tidy one - but Cabrio specific parts and trim have become increasingly hard to get hold of to restore tatty examples.
My 205 Diesel had the same trim. Ran it for years and years. Took it for granted. I wonder if it is still going now? I actually traded it for a 2002 Fiat Doblo 1.2 petrol as we needed more room. Guess what... we still have the Doblo, it is a brilliant conveyor of goats and even a sheep muck carrier.
The triangular shape on the top centre of the dash was a push to open compartment on some models (had soft open mechanism). The vertical blanking plate below the 3 circular buttons housed an orange illuminated digital clock on other models. The ventilation fan was quite unique for the day in that the fan was infinitely adjustable, not just 3 or 4 speed for example.
I had a Peugeot 205 XS with the 1.4 twin choke carburettor which was nippy and had wonderful handling. In fact I preferred it to my mates 205 1.6 GTI, because it felt so lively in the corners. It was the last car I had without power steering and you could really feel the road surface through the wheel. Wonderful car and I would have it back in a shot.
I had a CTi for a while in the early-'90s. Absolute hoot to drive and reminded me strongly of the Mini-Cooper 1275S I'd owned some years before that. The same chuckability, the same gobbling intake roar. Surely, also, the prettiest small car of the period.
My mother had a 205 XS back in the day. The triangle top on the dashboard was a lift up compartment with slots for coins inside on our car. It was a great car, and very fondly remembered. Had a lot of electrical problems though, but what a fun car to drive. One of Peugeot's all time greats.
I just bought a 205 Roland Garros Convertible, 1991 with 126.000km on it ... RG were always the luxury versions and used to come in dark green metallic and it has the electric WHITE (!) roof, power windows (front only) and leather steering wheel, all topped by its WHITE leather seats with grey cloth including green and red accents, finished with red seat belts. What a great, detailed and fun car this is - also own a 1982 Porsche and the 205 is a true rival now in terms of fun in everyday driving!
Good vid on what was a very rare car! Interior switches and layoit that carried onto the 106/saxo. And the hardtop cars were unusually developed from the wrc rally cars. And this model was the one that saved PSA anf showed the way forward with the 05 range and the ethos ( a simple car that had style and could be fixed easilly at home). But intrresting that this is one of the few cars he kept smiling as he drove it
This really takes me back. My grandfather used to have a white 3-door 205 in XL trim. Which meant base spec with the 1.1 carburettor engine. Peugeot really did take base spec very literally, the car didn't have a single option fitted. Hand choke, no rear whiper, no passengerside mirror, no radio, wind-up window, no center console, no tachometer. I loved it! Someday I would like to still have a 205.
Actually went and bought a beige 3-door 205 in XL trim a couple of weeks ago. Oh the nostalgia! What I now have seen as well is that the XL-trim doesn't even have the vents in the centre of the dash. It also doesn't have a glovebox, but just a small shelf under the dash.
I used to have a burgundy 205 GR 1.4 in the mid nineties. Loved it. Great to drive, good looking, reliable and compared to most other cars of the era rust-resistant. Probably the best all-round car I have ever owned
The rear suspension wasn't based on the 305 estate. The 205 had torsion bars whereas the 305 had a trailing arm which was also a bell crank which compressed a strut layed horizontally under the floor. The 305 system lived on with the Berlingo for ages.

The Peugeot 205 CTi was my favourite open top 205 because it had Peugeot 205 GTI thrills with the "wind in your hair" excitement of the open road roof down and made a dependable 4 seater with the roof up.
Always liked these dashboards. The stop light on the dash is just a second light for extra warning. It comes on with the oil of temp light, or some other critical warning. There's also a side/dip/main beam indicator light but you can only see them when activated. Nice video again!

Aircon not gonna happen? There were a bunch of versions of the 205 with AC, some even had heated seats. At these times you couldn't get a Polo with central locks.
Ive never seen a 205 with aircon, even the GTis Ive been in didnt have it, it was a crazy expensive option in 1990, by the last year of production it was becoming more normal but it was an option even on luxury cars then
@@Deadguy1988 That's right, but Japanese models were retrofitted with the AC by the importer. There is a generic switch below the driver's vent for the AC. Saw it last week on a 309 GTI in Tokyo. Scandinavian models had very often heated seats, it was standard on higher trim levels like GTI. And all cars had headlight wipers. In Europe the cars were rarely equipped with AC or heated seats. But you can find some in southern France, Spain and Morocco. My 205 doesn't even have center vents ;)
Why would you want air-conditioning on a convertible anyway? As far as I am concerned, why would you want it full stop. Just wind the windows down if you get hot inside your car.
Gti had completely different front suspension with lower control arms, normal ones had MacPherson struts ie a lower arm secured for and aft by the anti roll bar. What made them better was what was happening at the back, independent with trailing arms, bearing mounted with transverse torsion bars. Not a torsion beam golf/Polo style.
As mush as I’m a fan, you’d be better of with a 306 Cabriolet with colour coded soft top some nice wheels from the GTI 6 and gorgeous Pininfarina lines. Good review.
I had a golf MK1 1500cc diesel n a 205 diesel too i loved them both the golf had brilliant feel from the steering but overall the 205 handles a lot better n the engine was far more relaxing to drive as the golf needed to be revved up a lot which it did willingly also the golf engine was wearing out re bored to its max by just over 100,000 miles the 205 kept going to over 200000 miles n other than the gearbox FA major went wrong

A Very rare sight now a days in the roads and convertible are mean't to be fun or a classy GT cruiser in the summer and nice dry days I think I need to take mine out tomorrow and enjoy the cooler weather

Honestly I dont dare touch manual roofs apart form MX5s, Ive had bad experiences with borrowed convertibles getting stuck. No fault of the car, just doing something in the wrong order ad being alone in the middle of nowhere with a roof half up...

Once, my punto had a glitch and we only learn that the hardest way. I was on the highway and it started to rain. The roof simply didn't work. Time warp car that. The audio made it seem like the clutch was slipping. I only ever drove the 1.8 diesel van version and it was a powerful yoke. Great heater aswell. Rare car in Ireland (The convertible)

Seeing how the turn indicator(4:02) arrows are over on the right-hand side of the panel instead of the left-turn arrow being on the left, above the clock and the right arrow above the fuel gauge shows poor design of the dash layout.
if the turn indicator arrows are to be together, they should be positioned on the driver's console directly in line with the steering wheel column. Other wise, to separate them, place each turn arrow either side of another console item(like fuel gauge) or place them out to extreme left and right sides of the console for design balance.
In the left section are the side/dip/main beam indicators. You can only see them when they are illuminated just like the fuel light. Like Neil Forbes said it's one light for both ways. My car has the same lay-out, it has never bothered me.
I am thinking of buying a 205 convertible. My biggest issue with small cars is that I am rather tall. How tall are you? Would you want to be any taller. I am 6'6" (1.98m) and am worried that I would stick up a little over the windscreen and get my scalp blown off. You cap is definitely staying firmly on your head. Thanks for a great video!
Im 5'11 and had good headroom as its quite a tall car, but I couldnt say you'd have enough or not - a lot depends if you're height is on your legs or torso
Lovely video, great camera angles btw. Just subscribed (thought I was!) Are you too young to recall swapping an autochoke for a manual choke kit? It overcame sluggish opening when the bimetal coily thing tired with age. It also returned control to a driver who'd somehow 'flooded the engine' before injection revolutionised starting, power and economy. This motor is just so much prettier, though, than any modern Supersized Ugly Vehicle could be.
Lots of cars are going extinct in UK. I have a friend who lives in Edinburgh and he told me you barely see some ultra popular cars of not long time ago, currently.
Can I make a suggestion for your videos which would make them more professional and enjoyable? When you mention any other model, could you flash them up on the screen for just a second or two? Don't really know cars myself pre 1990 that well so all these other Peugeot models mentioned near the start of the video went over my head. Keep it up though!
Great video of a car we did not get here. The French had given up on North America by that point, even Renault was gone. Then again, the way they rusted, nobody bought them.
I remember my first drive with my friends in the GL 1.4 3 door my mom had. I almost hit a Renault 18 break right in the middle (it's driver passed throught the intersection like he was alone in the world). Zip zap of the steering wheel and I avoided it. Phiew...
My 1st Car was a 1.1 H reg hard top in 1999. It felt so lightweight on the road even though I was only 17 I managed to chop it in for a Mk1 Laguna. I needed more car around me!
The later convertibles Peugeot did were terrible in comparison, i used to have a 207cc the 1.6 naturally aspirated one it was so slow 0-60 in 11 seconds not good and felt very heavy to drive too , ended up selling it and using the cash to buy an Astra sporthatch which was way more fun, the old Peugeot gti,s were the best but they are impossible to find nowadays
Stalk controls - arse-about! Wiper controls should be on the LEFT of the steering column, Lights & Indicator should be on the RIGHT of steering column.

In that time I drove a 1985 Ford Meteor(also badged as Mazda 323), a 1990 Daihatsu Applause, a 1989 Toyota Camry station wagon(also badged as Holden Apollo), a 1996 Ford EF Falcon Futura sedan and now a 2003 Ford BA Falcon Futura station wagon. All bar the meteor had Power Steering and ALL had their stem controls the correct way round, wipers on left, lights/indicators on right.

@@Banom7a I drove a Toyota Camry(1989 vintage) station wagon for a few years. The same model was also marketed here in Australia as the Holden Apollo. This, like each car I've owned, had wipers on the left of steering column, turn indicator & light switch on right of column, the CORRECT way round. This also was the case in a Daihatsu Applause(1990) and the three Fords(1985 Meteor, also marketed as Mazda 323), 1996 EF Falcon "Futura" sedan and 2003 BA Falcon "Futura" station wagon. All my cars were Automatic with floor-mounted gears. Even going back to cars with column-mounted gears, the gear lever would be on the left of column for RHD cars, auto or manual, and the turn indicator(without the other functions) on the right of column, back in the day when light switches and wiper controls were still dashboard-mounted switches. I do remember a big 1964 Rambler, owned by a friend's father, automatic with column shift, built for Australia's right-hand-drive standards but with gears and indicator set for the American system, arse-about! Gears on right, turn indicators on left! They forgot they were building for a RHD market.
Some of these cars, their purpose and reliability eludes me. Most French, British and Italian cars I wouldn't touch. This looks like one of those genuinely. They have only returned to the Australian market recently, sell in paltry amounts, no one can fix them and the upkeep is horrendous. My nephew had a French puegot; the one with the weird arse end. It broke down one day and 4 years later the distributor still couldn't fix it. Reputation is everything.

The ( ! ) is the fluid level, also double as the ( P ) pad wear indicator (remember those?) The STOP means the handbrake is active. All the lights light up as a light test when the key is turned to the ACC position.
OMG, HubNut copycat!! I came home from the hospital in a G-reg white Peugeot 205, diesel. I think it was a 3 door. Wouldn't mind having a diesel 205, there's still plenty around and from what I've heard they seem to last well. What's the driving position like? I've driven a 206 and that's dire. Can't believe this only has 9,000 miles on it. Do people just buy cars to not use? The 206 has that same useless trough-style area on the dashboard. Great video.

Being a 1990-vintage, built in Europe, a bit cheap of them to put a cassette player in there when car CD players were fairly common by then. The maker would've been likely Philips, total crap! Should've been Technics or British PYE, or even EMI!
Not really, they were still being fitted in cars in to the 2000s, 1990 in a base-model supermini a CD player would have been the stuff of science fiction.

In Australia, a basic Ford Falcon Futura of late-1990s vintage had cassette and radio but an equivalent vintage Fairlane would have a radio/CD player in place of the radio/cassette. A late 1990s Holden Commodore may have a radio/cassette stereo but a Holden Statesman DeVille would have the CD/radio. The Statesman DeVille was Holden's prestige model!

Maybe a few executives and Japanese exotica but Ford would still fit a radio-cassette in to cooking models well in the naughties as one example, same as most other volume makers and their lower ranking offerings. I'm quite confident in Europe at least, a CD player in a supermini built in 1989 would have been quite remarkable. Can't comment on the Aussie market (that's John Cadogen's gig) but here in the _Old Dart_ it didn't happen.
in 1990 CD players were still a way off for mere mortals, and when they were fitted it tended to be either a separate player in the dash instead of the graphic equaliser or a 6 disk hanger in the boot. The earliest car I ad with a CD was a Freelander from 2002, which was the cassette player in the dash and CD changer under the seat. This was a Clarion in the 205
I always liked the Peugeot 205 and Peugeot usually last a good deal of time but my Gods! Those plastics in the dashboard of the 205, 309 and even the 405 are awful!!! I know all cars in the 80's had terrible plastics and specially ten french but even Renault and Citröen used better ones.
Great video :) Just one thing... I've never trusted anybody who drives a convertible with the roof down and the windows up. 😂 Go all the way or don't bother. This is the automotive equivalent of the mullet. I've driven convertibles daily for years and not once felt the need to do this...
You have to have the windows up if you want anyone to hear any audio in the video - otherwise all you get is FFFWWWWAAAOOOGGGGHHHOOOOOOOAAAARRRRRR from the wind!

You are very rude. The 205 is of its time, has a large following and was certainly not junk unless you deem ‘junk’ as being light and nimble. I’m guessing you’d struggle to fit in a 205 so a large lazy car would fit your requirements better. The reviewer loved this car in case you missed it, learn from him.
@@amnril I don't consider "light and nimble" as junk. The Morris 850, better known as the Mini-Minor is the epitome of "light and nimble" and a far superior product than that French crap.
The Morris 850(Mini), in spite of its outward appearance, was quite roomy and 4 people could ride in comfort. The only model that failed was the Moke because the driver and passenger were hard up against each other shoulder-to-shoulder, and from what I could see, there was no rear seating and those boxy sides confining the space..... I rode in a Moke once. After that ride, any ideas I harboured about ever owning one if ever I got a licence were very quickly jettisoned, but a Mini-Minor or Mini Clubman, provided I could get one with auto gears, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme!
The 205 GTi is definitely the best and most fun GTi ever!!

I had that same fan control in my 309 which I thought was a good Idea but haven't seen it since.
The triangular coin holder - if equipped so - is great as it exactly holds an iPhone in vertical position...best “navigation” placement ever!
On low spec LHD you did n't get any centre air vents either.

There was a Learner Driving school in the early nineties running these cars in Bournemouth. I think they were a dark green colour from memory. 😀

About your surprise on finding a manual choke in a 1990's car, in fact I own a 1992 Renault 5 1.1 with manual choke as well.

Gti had completely different front suspension with lower control arms, normal ones had MacPherson struts ie a lower arm secured for and aft by the anti roll bar. What made them better was what was happening at the back, independent with trailing arms, bearing mounted with transverse torsion bars. Not a torsion beam golf/Polo style.
There was a Roland Garros and French Open in Cabrolet also.
As mush as I’m a fan, you’d be better of with a 306 Cabriolet with colour coded soft top some nice wheels from the GTI 6 and gorgeous Pininfarina lines.

I had a golf MK1 1500cc diesel n a 205 diesel too i loved them both the golf had brilliant feel from the steering but overall the 205 handles a lot better n the engine was far more relaxing to drive as the golf needed to be revved up a lot which it did willingly also the golf engine was wearing out re bored to its max by just over 100,000 miles the 205 kept going to over 200000 miles n other than the gearbox FA major went wrong

I took the grey leather interior out of one at a scrap yard a good 16 years ago, not knowing how rare there were, the rest of the car was in pretty good shape too.

Honestly I dont dare touch manual roofs apart form MX5s, Ive had bad experiences with borrowed convertibles getting stuck. No fault of the car, just doing something in the wrong order ad being alone in the middle of nowhere with a roof half up...

Once, my punto had a glitch and we only learn that the hardest way. I was on the highway and it started to rain. The roof simply didn't work. I had to park under a viaduct and wait for the rain to pass. I feel your pain! Keep up the good work!
Time warp car that. The audio made it seem like the clutch was slipping. I only ever drove the 1.8 diesel van version and it was a powerful yoke. Great heater aswell. Rare car in Ireland (The convertible)

Seeing how the turn indicator(4:02) arrows are over on the right-hand side of the panel instead of the left-turn arrow being on the left, above the clock and the right arrow above the fuel gauge shows poor design of the dash layout.

if the turn indicator arrows are to be together, they should be positioned on the driver's console directly in line with the steering wheel column. Other wise, to separate them, place each turn arrow either side of another console item(like fuel gauge) or place them out to extreme left and right sides of the console for design balance.
In the left section are the side/dip/main beam indicators. You can only see them when they are illuminated just like the fuel light.
Like Neil Forbes said it's one light for both ways. My car has the same lay-out, it has never bothered me.
I am thinking of buying a 205 convertible. My biggest issue with small cars is that I am rather tall. How tall are you? Would you want to be any taller. I am 6'6" (1.98m) and am worried that I would stick up a little over the windscreen and get my scalp blown off. You cap is definitely staying firmly on your head. Thanks for a great video!
Im 5'11 and had good headroom as its quite a tall car, but I couldnt say you'd have enough or not - a lot depends if you're height is on your legs or torso

Lovely video, great camera angles btw. Just subscribed (thought I was!) Are you too young to recall swapping an autochoke for a manual choke kit? It overcame sluggish opening when the bimetal coily thing tired with age. It also returned control to a driver who'd somehow 'flooded the engine' before injection revolutionised starting, power and economy. This motor is just so much prettier, though, than any modern Supersized Ugly Vehicle could be.

I remember my first drive with my friends in the GL 1.4 3 door my mom had. I almost hit a Renault 18 break right in the middle (it's driver passed throught the intersection like he was alone in the world). Zip zap of the steering wheel and I avoided it. Phiew...

My 1st Car was a 1.1 H reg hard top in 1999. It felt so lightweight on the road even though I was only 17 I managed to chop it in for a Mk1 Laguna. I needed more car around me!

The later convertibles Peugeot did were terrible in comparison, i used to have a 207cc the 1.6 naturally aspirated one it was so slow 0-60 in 11 seconds not good and felt very heavy to drive too , ended up selling it and using the cash to buy an Astra sporthatch which was way more fun, the old Peugeot gti,s were the best but they are impossible to find nowadays

@@furiousdriving I've had about 5 cars in my time(from 2002 til now).I've only had the where-with-all to run a car since 2001 and got my licence at age 47 in 2002. In that time I drove a 1985 Ford Meteor(also badged as Mazda 323), a 1990 Daihatsu Applause, a 1989 Toyota Camry station wagon(also badged as Holden Apollo), a 1996 Ford EF Falcon Futura sedan and now a 2003 Ford BA Falcon Futura station wagon. All bar the meteor had Power Steering and ALL had their stem controls the correct way round, wipers on left, lights/indicators on right.

@@Banom7a I drove a Toyota Camry(1989 vintage) station wagon for a few years. The same model was also marketed here in Australia as the Holden Apollo. This, like each car I've owned, had wipers on the left of steering column, turn indicator & light switch on right of column, the CORRECT way round. This also was the case in a Daihatsu Applause(1990) and the three Fords(1985 Meteor, also marketed as Mazda 323), 1996 EF Falcon "Futura" sedan and 2003 BA Falcon "Futura" station wagon. All my cars were Automatic with floor-mounted gears. Even going back to cars with column-mounted gears, the gear lever would be on the left of column for RHD cars, auto or manual, and the turn indicator(without the other functions) on the right of column, back in the day when light switches and wiper controls were still dashboard-mounted switches. I do remember a big 1964 Rambler, owned by a friend's father, automatic with column shift, built for Australia's right-hand-drive standards but with gears and indicator set for the American system, arse-about! Gears on right, turn indicators on left! They forgot they were building for a RHD market.

Some of these cars, their purpose and reliability eludes me. Most French, British and Italian cars I wouldn't touch. This looks like one of those genuinely. They have only returned to the Australian market recently, sell in paltry amounts, no one can fix them and the upkeep is horrendous. My nephew had a French puegot; the one with the weird arse end. It broke down one day and 4 years later the distributor still couldn't fix it. Reputation is everything.

The ( ! ) is the fluid level, also double as the ( P ) pad wear indicator (remember those?) The STOP means the handbrake is active.
All the lights light up as a light test when the key is turned to the ACC position.

OMG, HubNut copycat!! I came home from the hospital in a G-reg white Peugeot 205, diesel. I think it was a 3 door. Wouldn't mind having a diesel 205, there's still plenty around and from what I've heard they seem to last well. What's the driving position like? I've driven a 206 and that's dire.
Can't believe this only has 9,000 miles on it. Do people just buy cars to not use? The 206 has that same useless trough-style area on the dashboard. Great video.

Being a 1990-vintage, built in Europe, a bit cheap of them to put a cassette player in there when car CD players were fairly common by then. The maker would've been likely Philips, total crap! Should've been Technics or British PYE, or even EMI!
Not really, they were still being fitted in cars in to the 2000s, 1990 in a base-model supermini a CD player would have been the stuff of science fiction.
@@musmodtos The Euro car makers would've gone for CD in their mid-range models. In Australia, a basic Ford Falcon Futura of late-1990s vintage had cassette and radio but an equivalent vintage Fairlane would have a radio/CD player in place of the radio/cassette. A late 1990s Holden Commodore may have a radio/cassette stereo but a Holden Statesman DeVille would have the CD/radio. The Statesman DeVille was Holden's prestige model!
The Junior was the base model but with denim seats. Hardly any cars had standard CD players in 1990.
@@MajorKlanga agree. Maybe a few executives and Japanese exotica but Ford would still fit a radio-cassette in to cooking models well in the naughties as one example, same as most other volume makers and their lower ranking offerings.
I'm quite confident in Europe at least, a CD player in a supermini built in 1989 would have been quite remarkable.
Can't comment on the Aussie market (that's John Cadogen's gig) but here in the _Old Dart_ it didn't happen.
in 1990 CD players were still a way off for mere mortals, and when they were fitted it tended to be either a separate player in the dash instead of the graphic equaliser or a 6 disk hanger in the boot. The earliest car I ad with a CD was a Freelander from 2002, which was the cassette player in the dash and CD changer under the seat.

I always liked the Peugeot 205 and Peugeot usually last a good deal of time but my Gods! Those plastics in the dashboard of the 205, 309 and even the 405 are awful!!!
I know all cars in the 80's had terrible plastics and specially ten french but even Renault and Citröen used better ones.

I've driven convertibles daily for years and not once felt the need to do this...

You are very rude. The 205 is of its time, has a large following and was certainly not junk unless you deem ‘junk’ as being light and nimble. I’m guessing you’d struggle to fit in a 205 so a large lazy car would fit your requirements better. The reviewer loved this car in case you missed it, learn from him.
@@amnril I don't consider "light and nimble" as junk. The Morris 850, better known as the Mini-Minor is the epitome of "light and nimble" and a far superior product than that French crap.
The Morris 850(Mini), in spite of its outward appearance, was quite roomy and 4 people could ride in comfort. The only model that failed was the Moke because the driver and passenger were hard up against each other shoulder-to-shoulder, and from what I could see, there was no rear seating and those boxy sides confining the space..... I rode in a Moke once. After that ride, any ideas I harboured about ever owning one if ever I got a licence were very quickly jettisoned, but a Mini-Minor or Mini Clubman, provided I could get one with auto gears, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme!
