Correction here: Trees will die after dehydration or exposure to bad water. Its not a problem bcz the wood is still available. Seedling however, will not mature if not irrigated.
Im playing that map at the moment. Its pain in the start, failed 3 times. I switched to planting only potato's and geared up with 6 sci houses to unlock metal items like waterproof floors, metal block factory lvl 1 platform, sluice, and a few other things like badwater pump and bigger storage. Made 2 forestry houses then got to work blocking all those water source's after I got the lvl 2 metal overhangs. Finished capping them all with 0.7 days left till bad-tide. After that I worked on a small upward tunnel that brought 1 of the water sources up then finished connecting all the other water blocks to my main tunnel. since i had allot of sci points I unlocked the 6 long metal overhang and build a small canal that let the bad water off the map until the U shaped canal was done that brought the water around the mountain and back to the main starter lake so the water isn't wasted that much. with sluices and a gate to let water off and to left bad water out. works ok atm. filled the space with water wheel so getting around 5-7k power atm. Nice vid.

This strategy would work well on normal. That said I think you learned a lot from this playthrough.
One could pump from mixed water and dump into the fresh area but you will keep having diminishing returns.
Yeah, you're right. Lessons learned already, but it still kinds works ;-)

Levees until the top? Aqueduct with overhangs? That might not be the wisest thing to do. Too much material input with too long a process (considering you will only have 2~4 builders working).
An alternate strategy:
Use pressurised pipe system to discard bad water to redundant reservoir.
How to achieve this & whether this works? Another TH-camr JCBeard did this in his Update 6 series. Quite neatly imo.
Would still require an overhang to be researched but would only require 1 overhang per source. Also, would require impermeable floors. (Key point: metal would already be needed for overhang)
The 4 sources combined into a single unit by segregating them via sluices & levess & impermeable floor+overhang. As for the discard of bad water, you could use explosives or build an exit pipe from this unit to the reservoir beside it.
Ofc, you are way ahead in the series atm. Probably figure it out later. But just writing notes, on what would be the optimum play based on whats changed from (the update which i last played & U6).

You are wasting a lot of resources relocating water pumps. You need to build them on platforms in a deeper area and also build them on the side of water source. The pumps will filter bad water out and 11% contamination will just reduce efficiency. You need to employ irrigation ponds heavily to grow wood and food and make a stable wood and food source. 3x3 pond contains 45 water which will evaporate in around 12 days. The same 1 level of water in this lake will evaporate maybe in 20 days and less when you pump from it. Forget metal for now until you get stable food and wood sources. That said this is a hard map in hard mode, but doable.
You can also get away with just one 1x3 or 1x2 overhang if you don't build up but string the pipe from levies, platforms and impermeable floor along the bottom and along the walls. You can replace impermeable floor with levies if you have enough wood. You will need much less resources that way. Just your vertical pipe needs 1344 logs.
Thanks for the tips! Since I already pre-recorded the next episode, I can't follow them all and you'll see that I took a slightly different approach. But that's the nice thing with timberborn, there are so many ways to play the game. Also thanks for the math!
@@notjohnsmithgaming I played through this map yesterday on hard just to make sure my theory worked. Reached cycle 16 day 13. One time almost run out of water but not quite. The contamination reached 85% because of multiple bad tides so pumps almost did not pump any water. I corrected by building more water storage. There are multiple problems with this map - no land to grow crops and place storage. No flow to put waterwheels and get energy, no land to build windmills. The only plus, initially you don't have to worry about wood and water storage as long as you can build ladders and platforms. The clean lake is drained by around cycle 10-12. Then you get some space to start developing. I still did not separated bad water from the clean water but with large pumps and 2K of water it is not a huge problem.
@@ab-gy7ie I was wondering if using mechanical pumps on top could make sense, until I remembered that it requires 5000 science and 50 metal blocks among other things. So while that does filter water, it is still not a viable option for the early game. Your approach with going for regular pumps in mixed water until you can divert good water is surely a sensible one.
