- Today the theme is old, After taking a walk through my parts storage I had found 5 vintage speaker drivers, How I ended up with them or what they were from is unknown, However today we see what they can do when given power from a pro audio mixer !

These Octagon speakers are made by Philips in Holland. Those you have was probably coming from an old radio. In the 1970, Philips made a fantastic woofer called AD8066, which is included in many high quality speakers. I use 12 of them in my PA system and they works very great. They have rubber surrounds and hard plastic dustcap
Was just about to make the same comment! As soon as I saw the basic design I thought Philips, then I saw the part number and recognised it as Philips. I used to work for them in the 70's.
Im from Holland myself and i also have a 8066 laying around, but i prefer the 10 inch woofer i have in my own speakers.

I used to own a set of classic Philips speakers (probably from the late 70's to early 80's). These ones had the 8" woofers with hard dust caps and rubber surrounds, as well as passive radiators. I remember those speakers sounding really good. The woofers had some crazy excursion capabilities (around 25mm total I believe)

First speaker is a Norelco (Phillips) AD 8068. a pretty good 8 inch speaker capable of full range from about 60 Hz to about 12 kHz. Box it up in about 1 cubic foot and it will sound pretty good. Unfortunately you destroyed it. Second speaker is unknown, but not bad. Third speaker is another Norelco full range, possibly another AD 8068. . The Norelcos can be reconed and they can be pretty good. They will be pretty efficient and make a lot of sound with not much power. 5 watts will get you a nice clear full range sound. With cheap amplifier power, we are into a new philosophy, which is inefficient speakers and pushing them with lots of watts. Old way was efficient speakers with not much power. I had a pair of Altec A7 speakers which I could drive with a McIntosh MC 250 that gave good clear sound from about 50 to 15,000 Hz and 94 dB in 10th row of 1000 seat hall, measured at 5 watts per speaker.

Those octagon speakers are actually made by Philips. They've been used in a ton of different things, some not having a whizzer cone (the Philips D8444 boombox uses a variant of it as the woofer) and/or having slight differences in size. They all share the same funky basket design though. I believe they were made from the 60's-70's.

I once hooked a really old vintage speaker to my amp and only the speaker for the low tones blew with a mild bass test. The wireing that splits up the audio works very well.
Speaker Nr 3 was an awesome smoke emitter, and Nr 5 had the afterburner. Merry Christmas Garret. Old tube radio speakers are often 5 Ohms.

The first two were vintage Philips. ..they liked to use that AD(numbers) on their magnets...I know because I owned a lot of Philips and all of em had that AD thing on the magnets
I think the code 2155 is a date code so I think it means it was made on the 21st week of 1955

As MultiShit said (Excellent name, by the way) they're a part of history. They've been around for so long, and I just have respect for ancient technology that's been around sometimes longer than the oldest people on earth. It's like a portal to a completely different time. I just find it sad when this old and increasingly rare stuff gets destroyed. One day this stuff will be so hard to find, and perhaps eventually nearly extinct.

You know how speakers work right? You know that apart from the AlNiCo magnet ones the others are exactly like new speakers but just older?
I can understand if something has contributed to audio equipment history or maybe it’s something rare and valuable and hard to find, but these are nothing, they don’t have history or any kind of special trait. They’re just old and forgettable.
If anything, these should remember us that people in 70s and 80s found these perfectly acceptable and that was stupid.
They’re just old pieces of metal and paper, nothing worthwhile nor worth anyone’s wasted time trying to save them

There are plenty of manufacturers that use different and even beautiful designs for speakers drivers.
Morel, Sonus Faber, Focal, Scan Speak and many others and on top of that, they actually sound good
The Motorola speaker was probably made in the late 40's - early 50's because the logo redesign was in 1955.
Most likely not. Note the aluminum VC former - speakers of that era only used paper formers. Aluminum was more commonplace starting in the 60's and 70's. Note the date code next to the manufacturer EIA says "703", implying it was made on the 3rd wk of 1967.

that's great! I don't think I've seen a speaker actually catch on literal fire before
i have, had a shitty laptop speaker set i took apart just to hook the speakers to a 500 watt amp i had. the first one didn't do much, just some smoke, the the second one i cranked the volume all the way up and played a very bassy track, the song hit a good note, the coil tore free of the spider, ripped the cone, and lit on fire, keep in mide this all happened within the span of one second. because i was in my garage, i let it burn all the way through, where the amp kept going and eventually the coil shot sparks everywhere and lit itself up even more. the thing eventually melted all the way through and all that was left was a lump of plastic and the metal basket. to this day i have not recreated it and condenser it the best blow i ever did.
those older speakers seem to put up a really good fight compared to the newer garbage. good video as always man :)

Failure mode on these old, low power designs is typically going to be due to melting of the adhesive coating the voice coil and holding the coil former to the cone.

The octagon speakers are Philips AD8080 speakers which has the neat pattern, and there are 4 and 8 ohm variants of it. They don't last long at all because they are 6 watts!
I’m a little late, but the reason the speakers are turning on and off in short little spirts, is because the amp is protecting the speakers. I’ve tried blowing speakers with a 2000s amp and it did the same thing. Protecting the speakers

The three octagon speakers are Norelco Philips 8 ohm drivers out of house tube radios, the Motorola is from a MT (musical turntable), and the smaller alnico driver was out of a car tube radio.

The octagonal one i believe is a Philips driver, it was certainly used in lots of Philips gear in the 70s. It is rated at 5w, 8R.

I think the third speaker with the Alinco magnet and the felt dust cap was probably a Jensen. Unmistakable cone texture and gasket, as well as the model number, C4111, being similar to the well known Jensen model C8r. The other round ones with the 8 screw holes were almost definitely Philips as others pointed out. The really old oval one was, as we all know, a Motorola.
Could you help me I just gained a free Sampson tm500 and I only get sound out of one channel and both channels work but only through tape input (this mixer is about close to that one you have) but it will not have both channels on the mic channels but only runs stereo and on both channels on the tape, I get sound on left pan only
That last speaker driver was playing a REALLY hot song.So hot, that it bursts into flames. ROFL!
These speakers can be worth some money so if you find some that work they can be worth something. Also those speakers with weird baskets are Philips and the 6x9 is a Swedish speaker i think

I have an east german RFT speaker rated for 10 watts...
I gave it 50 watts, and it lasted for half an hour, but it didn't blow up, just started to rattle like hell...
