Their lyrics and music cannot be described by normal standards. Mark's voice is no that of an opera or otherwise trained singer, but I'll be damned if he isn't the heart and soul which makes their music come alive. They have been with me since my adolescence, telling stories I love to hear over and over and will never forget until I die.
Love this song. They are a local band who grow up in Whitley Bay. This song is talking about the Spanish City in Whitley Bay (by Cullercoats) which in the 70s used to be a fair ground all the kids in the region used to go. Was there just a few days ago! Bring back so many memories. Lucky enough to have seen them live in Whitley Bay.
Ye Olde Grey Whistle Test was a great show. Bands played live and really showed what they could do. Obviously with no audience it’s not the same as, say, the Alchemy live performances but still a great showcase for the band. This song comes from their Making Movies album which nicely bridged the gap between their two earlier albums and what came next. It has some great songs on it, including this one. Also Romeo And Juliet, Skateaway, and Solid Rock. Please react to the 1993 live performance of Private Investigations and just enjoy the atmospheres created. The vocals are largely secondary to that track too; and basically spoken rather than sung.
Mark Knopfler is probably one of the most intelligent rock musicians. Don't make the mistake of thinking this music is 'simple'. Try to come up with something like that. Then you'll discover it ain't so simple.
I don’t know if it’s his voice or the instruments that they were playing but I kept expecting this to turn into their song, Sultans of Swing. It sounded so much like the latter song. 🤷♀️
This is going to be good. Oh yes and someday you will react to "Telegraph Road" (Live Alcamy version, please), and I hope I am still alive to be there watching.
There is no other performance better even by any other band than tunnel of love Wembley 85, if you watch closely at the end half the audience are dancing and the other half are just staring in disbelief 😮

Any live performance by Dire Straits is a gem. They are geniuses performing live.
Such a great effing song.

You have to listen to live at Wembley version. And a close second is the Alchemy version.
