What we really need GPD to actually develop is a nice and solid Oculink + Thunderbolt Dock in the usual GPD aesthetic. Basically just strip out the 7600m XT from the G1 unit so we can put our own gpus in there (plus optional shroud / cover for the looks)
Have a couple different SKUs, a barebones SKU thats simply an Oculink + tb dock but you plug your own PSU for the budget hack monster setups and another maybe with Gan power built in. Possibly release tiers over time 250w / 350w etc based on feedback and backers.
Any 1 of those I've mention sounds far more appealing to me over the current G1 simply because I don't wanna be stuck with an (admittedly small and sleek) eGPU that cannot be repurposed later. It may be fine now as is but iGPU performance will outclass mid tier gpus in a few years! Just look at all those Blackmagic 580 pro eGPUs on second hand sites. I love the GPD push on oculink but this reeks of a Wii U to me
P.S Keep it up Phawx, awesome attention to detail. Loving your content so far!

I was wondering, considering Thunderbolt 5/USB4 v2 will be released to the market sometime in 2024, and it will support symmetrical 80Gbps + 140W PD and hot swappable usage; wouldn't be the perfect replacement for both Oculink (63Gbps) and TB/USB4 (40Gbps + 100W)? wouldn't be the final 1 cable to rule them all? or am I missing something to still consider oculink during 2024?

I got the eGPU coming soon-ish after I backed the kickstarter for the new 7840U/64GB model. Unfortunately, the HDMI port crapped out on my 6800U/32GB model so ... I'm cautiously optimistic about longevity =_= They want me to send the whole device back and I'm hoping I can just get a replacement mobo I can swap it with and send the old one back. Shipping costs are insane for this thing.
It'll be nice to use the G1 with other machines though, I wanted versatility with this device.

RE: Doom Testing. The slowdown is likely due to the texture pool size being set to ultra nightmare. This is not recommended for 8GB cards. Card ran out of VRAM. I had this same issue with my 3070ti last year when setting to ultra nightmare at 1080p. If you keep everything else at ultra nightmare and drop the texture pool size to high, you would get full usage out of the GPU. That's all that issue was I believe. For anyone that may have this issue in ID Tech game engines :)

As has already been stayed above, yes, there will be a more considerable performance drop compared to oculink. Also the usb4 tb4 solution in the WM2 6800u isn't great. Not that this would justify upgrading to a new WM2, that would be unnecessary. But just bear in mind that usb4 isn't as stable or reliable as oculink in this case.

It's probably still worth it as any other thunderbolt 4 based eGPU with the similar performance won't really be much cheaper. In fact eGPU enclosures don't really make much sense for weaker GPUs since you end up paying more for the enclosure itself than the GPU.

The thing is, when you buy these devices you will try to tinker around a lot, so having a built in keyboard and optical touch pad are huge pluses in navigating windows while lying in bed/sitting on the couch.

Should be similar-ish, but you'll need to mod your WM2's M.2 slot into an occulink port, Phawx should have a vid on that modification.

It would have been nice to see some more realistic RT benchmarks, meaning in 1080p and medium-ish settings, not just in 4k which nobody would use.

Why is it saying PCIe link is 16GT/s
I thought Oculink is PCIe 4.0x4 for 63GT/s
    Thunderbolt 4/USB4 is PCIe 3.0x4 for 32GT/s
eGPU Docks should really be using desktop GPUs which are upgradeable.

    • @user-xp5ux3bs8v
      @user-xp5ux3bs8v ปีที่แล้ว

Oculink version 1 is PCIe 3.0x4
USB4 is not the same that Thuncerbolt 4.
USB4 does not say much and you need to know the specific implementation. One option might be a thunderbolt 3.0 with 16 Gbit/s for pcie lines. For Thunderbolt 4.0 32 Gbit/s for pcie link is requiered.
I miss that Phawx does not detail the configuration for the thunderbolt connection in this case.

@@user-xp5ux3bs8v GPD give the details in their marketing material for the G1 on their website. They are using Oculink version 2 PCIe 4.0x4 (4 lanes instead of the allowed). The USB4 is also full bandwidth as advertised 40GT/s using 4 lanes of PCIe 3.0. Which is why I'm curious about the reading of 16GT/s
