  • For film lovers, the '70s seemed like the glory days, but they weren't to last. Although several new theatres were built in that decade, many others were destined to close as we got into the '80s. And it may not be too much of a stretch to note that the progressive decline in Winnipeg's core ran in parallel with the gradual disappearance of the movie theatres and the thousands of people who once travelled downtown to catch a show.

So much of my childhood was spent at the theaters in Winnipeg and i took in much of the architectural design. I recall;the Odeon .Garrick, Lyceum, The Capitol ,Gaity, the Max on Ellice st., the Furby the Rialto. finally the grand old Wonderland on Sargent my 1st exposure to these great cinemas. But my favourite was the Met ,this one had a mezzanine and i used to think how grand it must have been in the 20s and 30s with people milling around during intermission. The Capitol was also very grand when the main entrance was still on Portage ave, it still had boxes and a huge ceiling chandeliar as did the Met with wrought iron vignettes from the Art Deco period. I could go on and on. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for your interest in the program! As each filmmakers owns the copyright to their own show, they are the ones that could possibly sell a dvd of the finished product. If you'd like to provide me some contact info, I could pass that along to the person who produced this program for us. Email me at kim.bell(at)mtsallstream(dot)com.
    thanks...kb
