    I once met an Italian woman in the USA who had survived this crash. Also, my father had been given by his parents, for his 21st birthday, an Alfa Romeo, which was on its way to the USA in the cargo holds of this ship. It's somewhere down there now, but Alfa Romeo were kind enough to send a replacement!

Which I wonder if it is what the poster of the comment is referring to, which would be impossible, as it was a prototype designed and owned by Chrysler (and NOT an Alfa-Romeo). And it will never be recovered, as the years of deterioration at the bottom will have virtually entirely destroyed it; the DORIA herself has corroded down to a superstructure-less hull, with no real interior (what's left is a thick jumble of hardly-recognizable rubble on the seafloor-resting side of the wreck).

    I have been renting a home in Italy in the Cinque Terre for years. It was built by one of the Officers aboard the Andrea Doria. It has a nautical theme. It is a beautiful home and his portrait is on the wall. He was a very handsome man. I've been fascinated by the ship. There is an exhibit now in Genoa, italy about the incident. I am sure it was a life changing event for all involved. According to Captain Bertinis daughter, Captain Calamai never recovered from his depression after the incident. he was wrongly accused and not exonerated for 10 years after it happened.

      Yes, the story of the brave Captain Calamai was a profoundly unjust thing. Economic reasons of the insurance policies meant that he was not defended enough and a partial reconstruction of the incident was considered good. It was Stockholm (which had a young, inexperienced officer who did not notice that the radar calibration was different from what he believed) to cause the tragedy. Years later, with the radar traces, the commander of the United States of America officers' training school demonstrated this by sending a letter to the now elderly and tried Piero Calamai. In the letter he demonstrated that his conduct had been exemplary, that Stockholm was entirely to blame, and at the end of the letter he expressed to him that he would consider it an honor to be under his command. Unfortunately Calamai did not open the letter which a few months later was found intact by his daughter in a desk drawer a few days after his father's death.

      There's been controversy and BS and twists about who and what ever since the sinking. I hold largely with the original report: While both made mistakes and scew ups, the Andrea Doria's skipper made the fatal error: Inexplicably steering to port (left) rather than the Standard Rules of the Sea: On collision course?: Both ships should steer to their starboard (Right). Thus, steering away from each other. The Stockholm turned to starboard, as it should have. The Andrea Doria steered port, and the 2 smashed into each other. In the last minutes, collision unavoidable, the AD captain steered further port, hoping to scrape by. But that made the Stockholm hid near broadside, cutting into too many bulkheads for the AD to stay afloat.

      @@carlcushmanhybels8159 plus the AD, beautiful as she was, had a major design flaw in the form of fuel tanks running the length of each side. Nearing the end of her crossing, these were almost empty, so when one was punctured by the Stockholm, it filled with water and destabilised the AD. Moreover, the list was quickly so pronounced that it made filling the other tank with seawater (to ballast it and level the ship) impossible as the intakes were now out of the water. However, even were this not the case, I think the Doria was doomed. The scale of the damage was horrific; being Swedish, the Stockholm had a reinforced icebreaker prow which broke the AD's keel and practically cut her in two. Even had she remained afloat, she'd have probably been scrap :(

      Ile de France was built in 1926 and like many French ships had a tough war having been commandeered by the Allies as troopers and armed cruisers. The lifespan of a large ocean liner was around 25-30 years at that point, partly due to the speed at which propulsion technology was evolving, so by the end of the fifties she was getting quite long in the tooth at 34 years old and was due for replacement (by the SS France, later the Norway). There were a few exceptions which remains in service for longer, for instance the Achille Lauro which was 55 years old when she sank in 1994, the SS America (also wrecked in 1994 at the age of 54), the Queen Elizabeth 2 (40 years) and of course the Stockholm, which at 75 years old is now by far the oldest large passenger vessel still in service.

    I worked as a fifth officer on RMS Andrea Doria. But resigned from my job immediately after Stockholm struck it. It was not my fault at all but captain put all the blame on my shoulders. Ship gone down along with my Resignation Letter just before captain could get time to accept my resignation. Later I joined Stockholm as a first officer. I worked hard there & one day became Captain there (Note: Now name changed to MS Asoria). Planning to retire next year 2024.. Thank You🙏

      NEVER heard a bigger set of bullshit than this. If you had been on the Doria now you would be AT LEAST 87 years old. EVERYONE knows that the Commander of the Doria, Calamai, was a multi-decorated officer of extreme value so don't allow his memory to be tarnished. Third... never seen anyone retire from a job on a ship at almost 90 years old. Next time either drink less or be careful what you take by mouth or nose.

      the wreck lies in a very dangerous location where the ocean currents are the most treacherous. And she is decaying at far faster rate than the Titanic

      A lot of people visit this wreck, and have done so since a week after it sank. It isn’t haunted, it’s just in a dangerous location, but even so many people have explored the wreck.

    There was AMPLE time to get ocean going tugs to her and tow her to a port! I love all ocean liners, i hate to see them sink or cut up on a beach in India! We sailed on one of the last steam ships, to the Falkland Islands she was used as a hospital shop and later a troop ship - SS UGANDA. A group of us tried to buy her to renovate as a floating museum, but due to a ‘mistake’ they towed our ship away where it ran aground and broke its back!😡 later her sad remains were cut up. No end to her illustrious career, the same as Andrea Doria.......she deserved much better😔

    • @sachemrock
      @sachemrock ปีที่แล้ว

      There may have been ample time to get the tugs out and they did but by the time they got there she was listing so badly that to hook her up was not possible as she would have immediately capsized and taken the tugboat with her.

    • @derekninabuck5359

      no she wouldn't have, the Stockholm had a specially raked and reinforced bow designed to break through icefields, if a collision with another ship caused that much damage to a reinforced ice breaking bow on a ship with max speed of 17 knots and a third the size of Titanic, imagine what would have happened if a much larger ship, Stockholm was 12,165 GRT compared to the Titanic at 46,329 GRT, going at a much faster rate of speed with out a reinforced bow striking an object head on, far more damage would have been done. Most of the Titanic Head on collision theories are based on evidence from events happening on much smaller ships traveling much slower than Titanic was.

      @@dano8613 There were mistakes and covers on both sides. The fatal error: With the two ships on collision course, Stockholm steered starboard, -by the standard rule of the sea. But Andrea Doria inexplicably steered port. Had they both steered starboard, they would have narrowly missed each other. Instead, Andrea Doria's last move insured they'd crash. Having gone too-port, with Stockholm looming, AD steered further port, in a last hope they'd squeeze parallel. But that left AD's open broadside/ too many bulkheads were smashed for AD to stay afloat. In contrast, Stockholm's bulkhead in the prow held, largely sealing water off where her prow had been sheared off in the collision. Other errors: Stockholm had the wrong radar scale on. Distances it thought were 15 miles away were really 5. Both were steaming too fast for the foggy conditions...

    The Andrea Doria was struck by a rogue beached whale on the morning of September 23rd, 2019. It took over there years for her to succumb to the damage inflicted and eventually sank to the bottom of Lake Winnipesaukee, splitting into six pieces as it sank. It rests nearly 12 miles below the surface. Only the most experienced divers have ever laid eyes on her. It tragically claimed the lives of over 35,000 men, women and children. Most of the victims did not drown. They were instead eaten by rabid sea turtles. To the souls lost those three years, party on. You'll not have died in vain.

    Such a great maritime tragedy! Did the old man go down with the beloved?

    • @toddkurzbard
      @toddkurzbard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, he was one of the last off the ship, but the experience broke him. He never went to sea again. He would later say, "I used to love the sea-now I hate it". On his deathbed, his alleged last words were, "Is everything all right? Are the passengers safe?". So, if anybody wants to blame him for the disaster (I don't), you can be satisfied knowing that he payed for any crime you might believe him to be guilty of in the worst possible way.
