I'm so very glad shoegaze never really went away. The Japanese, Eastern European and South American scenes kept things humming, though the mid-2000s to early 2010s was a really fallow period. Clairecords seemed to hold the fort down until the larger revival happened from what I experienced. Shame bands like All Natural Lemon and Lime Flavors, Lenola (though they were really part of the Psychedelphia trend), Sleepover Disaster and Sciflyer never really got their days in the sun.
while I agree they are pretty mellow I still think Kick The Tragedy is one of the greatest shoegaze songs of all time... there's so many effects going on to create a very haunting dreamscape all backed by this huge wall of fuzz kind of muffled or off in the distance, it is a journey as all good songs should be
Thank you for this video. I went to UNH when they were big, and they were an unmistakable presence. I personally love National Coma, despite the lack of support for it, and I'm super excited for their reunion.
Great documentary. Drop Nineteens were/are criminally overlooked and underrated, hopefully more people will learn about them from this video. Their new album was amazing, I highly recommend giving it a listen!
This is the best news since the Slowdive reunion!! The Drop Nineteens were the group that introduced me to Shoegaze. About 15 years ago a local record store was closing their doors and selling everything which is where I picked up Deleware unaware of the group and what "Shoegaze" was, but the album cover was cool. I immediately loved the sound, especially "Deleware" and Kick The Tragedy", and began to discover the genre and discovered Slowdive shortly there after. Sadly I never warmed up to "National Coma" but am excited for a reunion and releasing mastered versions of old material!
The absolute best 'Shoegaze' band for me at the time was The Nightblooms who were Dutch. (The Drop Nineteens had big backlash in their hometown scene because they were fresh faced, upper middle-class, B.U. kids who seemed to come from out of nowhere and were grabbed up in the 'Alternative' signing rush. The English press loved them. Much like the Strokes phenomenon. I saw Paula in her previous bands and always liked her).
One of my most-listened to bands on Spotify. I liked National Coma! Never heard of these guys until 2020. (only heard what was on the radio in the early 90s). Another obscure hidden-gem bands from the grunge era is Band of Susans
As always great documentary!!🥰i recently started to listen them and i didn't knew much about their story,it's very interesting ☺️they have a really unique sound
Back in the early days of TH-cam (2007!) i left a comment on a Drop Nineteens music video of an alternate version of "Your Aquarium." I commented that it is hard to find, and Steve Zimmerman hit me up and sent me the version I was looking for via email. Winona is one of my favorite songs of all time ever since I heard it on an episode of The Adventures of Pete and Pete when I was like 8 years old.
Despite mayfield slow quality the demos are amazing would love to hear a cleaned up high fidelity version of them someday. Going to take a trip to San Fran in October to see the drop nineteens
They are now back together and released a new album. They are also planning on remastering their 2 demos and releasing it on vinyl a double LP, and they are trying to release Delaware themselves and adding other stuff to it.
It's really fascinating to compare the two genres! I had kind of a similar experience, listening to Nirvana in my teen years but I've become much more of a shoegaze fan in my 20s.
quite surreal seeing various minutia from my Hassle piece (Canada border scenario, etc.) presented in this style and quality. Well done, feels like kind of an honor. Can't wait for that 1991 remaster comp to come out soon. In the meantime, hit me up if youre trying to sell that Vermonstress ticket stub pictured @ 5:08
You mention the reforming of shoegaze bands and I think that’s great too. I was down with it from the b finning and my 17 year old son and his friends are all into it too. And you’re exactly right that grunge is what did the scene it which I saw at the time as a real bummer :-// “I wonder what the future holds?” =]
wow i just noticed your channel, subscribed with another account of mine hoping for more of these, and also i'm proud of having uploaded such a great tape such as mayfield a few years ago... i saw that screenshot of my upload 👀i just can't wait for the new album, and especially that 1991 remaster coming out this year... definitely shaping up as an exciting thing keeping me up when not much is really engaging anymore lol, thank you for picking such great bands for your documentaries too
Wow! I swear I never met anybody who knew the Drop Nineteens ... which were one of my favourite bands in the 90s! This video taugh me so many things about the band. By any chance, do you know a band called BABY GOPAL? if know .... check them out! They are such a good band, with extremely catchy songs.
I didn’t realize I had a bunch of “shoegaze bands” on my playlist until I started doing my research on the bands I listen to. Pretty cool. A lot of shoegaze bands didn’t brand themselves shoegaze.nevertheless did become a sorta genre ofc
Thank you Hybrid Divide! I can't wait either 😁. From what I could find, Summer Session only exists in bootleg form, but I've heard that they are working on remastering it!
i think maybe you would like the band tuxedomoon, they arent really shoegaze but they r very unique and hard to classify, they blend post punk with ecletic lush instrumentation and progressive songwriting .. sounds like something youd be into based on the videos i saw here
Thanks for the recommendation S728! I think I would like Tuxedomoon too. I've actually been meaning to listen to one of their records, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. I think you've convinced me to listen to it today.
I'm in Boston. I have been since '88. The melodic punk band I was in, (Damaged Goods) -was well aware of the local bands we were competing with for air time on college stations WZBC and WMBR, -and here's where everything goes to suck. There was a local band called "The Forever 19" who even competed in the WBCN Rumble of 1991. I knew them to be some hot female fronted pussy band- (which broke up in the night of the Rumble after receiving bad reviews), and of course I assumed the Drop Nineteens were the same band. UGH. I never saw the Drop Nineteens play or supported them because of that basic mistake.....their name was all over flyers around Boston at the time, but I always tuned them out. I hope at some point you guys forgive me......sorry......
Thank you so much maloART73, this really meant a lot to read. You're definitely right, I think a lot of American bands in those days were much more inclined to follow the grunge movement.
I saw Drop Nineteens open up for rarely mentioned UK shoegaze band Revolver. Their songs struck me as not being fully realized and bland. I should revisit their first album.
Thank you Nico :) I am looking forward to their return as well. I'm planning on doing a Japanese shoegaze video very soon and I will give them a listen!
I’m really excited about this wave of shoegaze bands coming back, it’s beautiful to see how appreciated the genre is today
It's amazing I agree! I think the future for shoegaze is bright, and I'm so thrilled.
I'm so very glad shoegaze never really went away. The Japanese, Eastern European and South American scenes kept things humming, though the mid-2000s to early 2010s was a really fallow period. Kick the Tragedy is by far one of my favorite shoegaze songs ever. I'm so glad I found this genre in the last couple of years!
It's definitely one of the greatest shoegaze songs! I'm happy you've found the genre too ☺
I was around when this was released and this song has been my favorite ever since! Almost 30 years now!
Winona, too!
This song gave me chills
Winona is one of the best songs of the 90’s.

Good timing since Greg confirmed they’re remastering mayfield and should be out next year hopefully
Great news ! I would love to get it on vinyl
@@StainedGlassStoriesthe new album is out now if you wasn’t already aware
Kick the tragedy..... Brilliant tune
so glad to see the drop nineteens get attention they’re very underrated. now i’m patiently waiting for the curve documentary.
I'm glad they are coming back together. I think they had so much potential as a group. I'll include Curve in my next poll!
Scapa Flow is absolutely beautiful. Can't wait for the whole record and to see them live!
Thank you for this video. I went to UNH when they were big, and they were an unmistakable presence. I personally love National Coma, despite the lack of support for it, and I'm super excited for their reunion.
IMO best Shoegaze band ever. Delaware is my favourite SG album. great to hear they are coming back 2023

Found this band my favorite way-found their album in the used cd bin-Delaware is a mysterious album of exquisite beauty
Love the Album Delaware I wish I can have it on vinyl
Me too Felecity! I saw on their Twitter page that they are reissuing it! Sadly I had the script written and recorded before this announcement.
Love their cover of "Angel".
I bought both their albums on tape when they came out, still favourites of mine
U are a very lucky person. Copies of these projects are insanely expensive and overpriced :(
Nice to watch that. Brings back lots of memories.
their new albums so good
YESSSSSS. Got an original press of Delaware and Your Aquarium EP. They're one of the best.
That's awesome Jake! If I were you I would never let them go! They are both great records.

they changed my life, I covered "my Aquarium" acoustic version way back when, she went on to be very famous in her chosen field, and she still is
Delaware is such an under-rated album. Great news that they are recording again.
I agree! Hopefully it will get more attention when the Drop Nineteens release their next album.
Thank you!!!
i am so hooked into shoegaze as of recent but i grew up listening to grunge and 90s alt from my dad so i love the change of tone
