I just had an idea to make a go kart sort of thing this morning and I've been looking for hours for an explanation of how the axles work. Great explanation and clear visuals. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the information. I just got an old ken bar streaker (model #d-690). It has a differential but its missing the gears. Do you know where i can purchase the gears. The axle is 1in
Thank you for such an in depth instructional tutorial. I have learn't a great deal about axles tonight. Going with things coming undone. Would you recommend castle nuts on the wheels with split pins? Just like they have on cars, trucks etc.
A jack shaft set up, between the engine and differential, is what you want. Comet clutch-engine/jack shaft then chain-jack shaft/differential, then brakes on both sides of axle. When I was a kid I had a Montgomery Wards 3 wheeler with this set up, 8 horse Tecumseh. Tough set up! Took everything I could dish out until the engine gave the ghost (took about 12 years). At that point I put a JLO 17 horse snowmobile engine on it. That drive train still took the abuse for another 8 years up to and after I sold it! Later on I learned it's the same live axle that sells at northern hydraulics. Just a little 411. Like videos and builds BTW.
I run a dead axle on my drift trike. I used 2 old snapper wheels and drilled out the 2 wheels so it would match my hub and I had to make another hub for the passenger side. I put 8 inch trims on it. Works great
There is a 4th type. And I am setting up my cart that way. The engine drives a jack shaft w/o gear reduction. The jack shaft has 2 centrifugal clutches one for each wheel. This is positive traction. Too much scuffing with a live axle whenever you are on a road or pavement. This setup has two independent axles one for each wheel and mounts almost reaching the other axle.
Hey Tman I have a couple questions. Are the tires from the fullscreen from bmi and if so do you have the part number? Also do you know where I could get a premade chain tensioner for #40/41 chain?
hey i just got a mini bike and it has front and rear shocks. the front shocks re hydraulic but need new fluid for them. how can i tell what tyoe and how much fluid to use for this. i cant find anything on here about how to do it or how to tell what they are. could you possibly help me pleas?
T-Man I have a question so I took a 4speed tranny out of a crastman LTE and took the spider Gerard of the shafts and then welded the shafts together could I use that as my axle for a racing go kart
For a dead axle set up, is it possible to secure the one turning wheel so it turns the axle, which is attached to the other wheel? causing both wheels to turn with the engine? This seems like it would be do-able and would significantly reduce prices on the go kart im getting
My gokart axle doesn't have any rust on it. I drive it in water, dirt everything even mud and no rust. Set screws are pretty trusting. Only one time my sprocket set screws vibrated loose and I ended up with my chain falling off. I drive on smooth cement and dirt which doesn't make it too hard to steer with no differential but on a rough asphalt road, it's tricky to turn. I have to speed up a bit then make my turn. Most of the times I don't make a full u turn.
What keeps your axle from sliding out besides having the wheels on each side. I got a 3/4 axle that goes into a pipe that welded part of the frame with 3/4 ID bearing on each side. But old axle stayed in pretty good new axle I purchased. It goes straight through and it flies out other side. Old axle had keyway just on the hub area and on the threads. New axle has keyway all the way down axle except on the threads. Do I have wrong axle ???
Ok I got a question about my go kart T Man. It's a beast that some amusement parks would use. You could toss this thing down the grand Canyon and the frame would probably be unharmed. I'm pretty sure it had a dead axle on it at one point but someone put a solid racing quad axle on it (posi) it didn't have a motor but I had a 5.5 honda engine sitting around so I used it. Here's my problem. When on grass, this thing will not take off at all, the centrifugal clutch does not engage enough to get it going. What's my issue? Is it the posi axle or what are we looking at? And I have one of those centrifugal clutches with the 4 c shaped clips that open up as you accelerate instead of the spring that loops around type.
at 6:20 you move the axle (left side push, right side pull) the wheels move in opposite direction , the axle doesn't (noticed from the sprocket remaining still). How do you lock your hubs to your axle? Thnx G
Huh? Think there was some confusion in my question. The hub where wheels mount, they seem to be on bearings, only because the axle doesn't move when you move the tires. If the sprocket turns the axle, how does your axle turn the hub/tires?
I have hubs where the axle would pass through two bearings that are pressed on. I'm looking to lock the hubs onto the axle. Is there a special hub I need to purchase for that?
23X10.5-12 tire and thinking of going with a 1" axle, the bearings are removable in the hub (2 of them, one for each side of the hub). I have researched and found bearings ranging from 3/4", 5/8", 1" I can have pressed in for my particular hub assembly
When you going live again? I was eastnc last Sat night. That was pretty cool and funny at times...I'd do it again as it stands now. You have to put a brake disc and a brake caliper on each axle so you are required or should put two brakes on the rear axle Peerless makes a differential and sodas comet I have a differential on my Dingo and it's made by comet and it's got twin Disc Brakes in the back

a few ways. look for axles that you can get then build everything off of that. Or think about how wide you want it to be then look around for an axle that would be 4-5 inches shorter because once you add the tires then the width should be about ideal width you wanted it to be.
I just bought a used go kart, ATK-125-A (JEEP STYLE 125CC YOUTH GO KART) problem is the bottom gear attached to the axle is not lined up with the top sprocket, so chain slips off..the sprocket is also wobbly...would a new sprocket setup fix this or do i have to somehow align the big gear on the axle?? I tried but the nuts on the axle i loosened but cant seem to move the big gear to the right, only to the left...please help!
I just built a trike with a live axle, i am having a hard time turning because when i turn right, the right wheel would cover less distance than the left. other way around when I turn left. It is causing the trike to do jerk stops and the wheels are skipping. Typical live axle issue like old ford mustangs. Whats the solution?
Hey t man I have a question I wanna build the Same go cart I dont want to be a copy cat but I love ur fullscreen machine and wanted to build it but I was wondering how much u spend in total to make it and also if we can talk about specification on it please
Thank You for this video ‼️‼️✌🏼️✌🏼✌🏼 I too have a dead axel & want to make it live so I can put some nice drift tires and rims on. I was walking through your comments and like me not sure how it's done ❓❓❓❓is it possible for you to put a video together and show us how this is done. Thank You for this info it did answer some questions I was grinding on. I subbed to your site seems like ya have a lot of know how on karts.
+Mike Remvidas Thanks Mike. I havent had the opportunity to do a conversion on video (dead to Live) I'm hoping to soon because a neighbor wants me to do it to his. So ya there is a plan for it when he gets the money together and brings it over to me.
Now again iam confuses with the mounting of engine...i seen many small buggies with side mounted engine? What is the main difference between mounting engine to side and middle?
I have a wonderful rear differential. I have been trying to figure out how to put a hydraulic brake/ mechanical brake caliper on to it. I haven't found anyone with this kind of setup. please help!
I have the same problem. I'm going to add a T in the hydraulic brakes before the caliper and have 2. One on each rear wheel and use 2 rotors like an atv that has hydraulic front brakes. I'm just trying to figure out how to get another rotor on because my diff is on one side with no room between it and the wheel for a rotor
+Ryan Fortin. I'm not to sure if it matters on go karts, but older and newer cars need a proportioning valve to get equal distribution to both calipers. but unknown to kart application!!
can any one tell me how or where to get a clutch for either a mac 10 or a mac super 250 chainsaw? i already have both saws and they run good, i plan on using one or the other to power a kart, i also have a comet cv belt drive clutch/tranny but it takes a 5/8 inch input with no taper and my saws have a much smaller shaft with a taper. i am on a im broke as a spoke budget so i cany put anything cept pennies into parts. i dont care if i use the comet cv or a simple centrifigal chain clutch [ i also have a couple chain clutchs but they also fit a 5/8 no taper shaft with a key ] oh yea not sure on the 10 but the 250 super crank shaft has threads on the end of it to mount the clutch. PLEASE any help be welcome where to find info or buy/ barter parts new/used
I have never had a problem with the set screws on the bearings or the brakes. One time the sprocket on my gokart has shifted dramatically and my chain blew off. It was due to a loose, cheap set screw which the head of it stripped.
Hey t man, I bought a rolling frame for $20 and the rear end is junk to my plan is to saw it off and weld a new one on with new barings and axle, sprocket etc. but I want to know whats cheaper that single sprocket with no hub btw 13 inch tire or sprocket hub with sprocket planning to run a 1" axle
Collin Pries Whats cheaper, well that depends on where you get it from. since you are doing the re-build of the rear, simply expect to spend 200 if your getting everything new. Which by the way is the best thing to do.
www.bmikarts.com/view_cart.asp Here is my list of supplies has far has brakes go I figure a tree or a obstacle will do. I will buy pillow blocks at our local hardware store along with square tubing
Hello, Can you list the parts that have gone into the axle you have on the bench? -tyres size where you got it from -rims size where you got it from -axle size where you got it from -etc include the brakes you intend to use on this axles. I wish I could buy/afford a complete axle like that. I have a Chinese offroad go kart which I modified and fitted with hydraulic brakes and changed the engine to GX390 with a 40series torque converter(Chinese), its got a lot of torque. I would like to build a go kart with bigger tyres 13inc or bigger and use it to carry three four passangers as well as pull a trailer with kids in it. (That is not realy a go kart is it but you get the idea). I would be cool to pull kids around in the Kalahari sands.
This seems like the place where people would be knowledgeable. So my question is- Alot of people who build go karts drive them on standard style pavement. But they use heavy off road golf kart style tires. Wouldn't it be alot better to use 16" bicycle wheels with street treads. Wouldn't they allow you to cruise faster because they weigh less, and have the correct tire tread?
hey t man I'm building a home made all terrain 2 seater kart im using a 650cc 1981 yamaha xs motor cycle engine im going to do a live axle do you know where i can get one I need it to be about 40" long
well most of the time it comes down to a 54 tooth sprocket, thats what most beginners use. But be sure to check the chain size that you want to work with. if you have a go kart then its most likely a 41 or a 40 pitch chain.
i am a tottal noob.... but if my axle sprocket has a keyway... Means its not free ...what i mean iw a bicycle sprocket alows you to pedal... but when you stop peddling. it allows you to coast.... so wothout that ability. that means soon as you stop giving it throttle the lower rpms of engine will cause you to slow to a stop correct? im planning a mini bike build. and was wondering how that all works
T-Mans Go Karts thanks for fast reply.... so if i get largest torque converter. 40 series o think... if i use smallest sprocket on rear pully on torque converter. and largest on axle to wheel. should give me highest top speed? correct.. is there a special ratio that gives torque and top speed?
lol, no you dont have to go that extreme . get a 212 cc engine from Harbor Freight .....then get "TAV2" it comes as a set-up. and then get a 54tooth sprocket for the rear. That is the most basic and common set-p of both minibikes and go karts.
T-Mans Go Karts ok and thats mu next question. is it worth gettint a 212. and doing cam. springs. and stage 1 kit. or just save and run a stock 420 without a governor?
well both engines put out the same RPMs. The 420 has more power but both engines ( at stock ) will give the same speed. If you building a minibike just go with the 212cc. Moding it will give some better performance BUT the engine wont last as long.
@@kelbypressley1288 well , the specific one I have in the video is rare because it is solid ( no bearings) but if you are looking for a set-up with bearings you could go over to BMI karts and get there phone number and call, they could set you up good.

What about drilling and tapping holes in the spacers and adding grease zerks? This way you can shoot a little grease in there to lube and protect.

Yes! That one wheel has to pull all of that weight. Live axel will put that power to both wheels!
LOL. He's gotta go charge his battery so he can keep talking. Must be one of those new battery powered humans. LOL
Bite through? Shouldn't I drill small holes through my axle so my set screws will screw in snug?
+Ean Gdaniec nah , thats not a good idea. if you ever brake one off inside it'll be hell trying to get it out.
***** Thank you... but I am still finding it difficult to trust a small screw to keep an axle from swaying, just by pressure. I need locker collars.
+T-Mans Go Karts what would you say about a belt feed to a chain that runs the tire?
Can u help me put an axel on my go kart it needs to be changed
How do you know what length axle you need for a go kart?
a few ways. look for axles that you can get then build everything off of that.
I tried but the nuts on the axle i loosened but cant seem to move the big gear to the right, only to the left...please help!
get some video up about it so I can see what your talking about.
ok it just rained outside one minute..
Right he just provided the solution.
I'm restoring a manco dingo. with a live axle is one hub keyed in place and the other spins freely. that's what I have.
***** First of all, I really like your videos. Secondly, how do you attach the sprocket to the live axle. Thanks, and keep up the good work. :)
Andrew Waraksa lol, that is called a sprocket hub, be sure to look at your bolt pattern and size when looking for one.
***** thanks
Hey t man I have a question I wanna build the Same go cart I dont want to be a copy cat but I love ur fullscreen machine and wanted to build it but I was wondering how much u spend in total to make it and also if we can talk about specification on it please
Jesus Villa I think about 900, But I did build it all. If you get real spindles and stuff for a buggy then its going to cost more
***** is there any other method to contact u t man cause i have lots of question
What is the main difference between mounting engine to side and middle?
you can use that axle as a bar bell and do some pumping up your muscles :0)
I have a wonderful rear differential. I have been trying to figure out how to put a hydraulic brake/ mechanical brake caliper on to it. I haven't found anyone with this kind of setup. please help!
+boca2001921 ... hmm. its kind of hard to know what you have with out a video of it. could you put something up on your channel so we could see?
+T-Mans Go Karts yes I can! give me a few, and I'll do a quick walk around.
okay, video is up. don't mind the mess, or my lack of knowledge...heh
PLEASE any help be welcome where to find info or buy/ barter parts new/used
are live axles faster
I have never had a problem with the set screws on the bearings or the brakes. One time the sprocket on my gokart has shifted dramatically and my chain blew off. It was due to a loose, cheap set screw which the head of it stripped.
Hey t man,
I bought a rolling frame for $20 and the rear end is junk to my plan is to saw it off and weld a new one on with new barings and axle, sprocket etc. but I want to know whats cheaper that single sprocket with no hub btw 13 inch tire or sprocket hub with sprocket planning to run a 1" axle
Collin Pries Live axle
Collin Pries Whats cheaper, well that depends on where you get it from. since you are doing the re-build of the rear, simply expect to spend 200 if your getting everything new. Which by the way is the best thing to do.
www.bmikarts.com/view_cart.asp Here is my list of supplies has far has brakes go I figure a tree or a obstacle will do. I will buy pillow blocks at our local hardware store along with square tubing
Hello,
Can you list the parts that have gone into the axle you have on the bench?
-tyres size where you got it from
-rims size where you got it from
-axle size where you got it from
-etc
include the brakes you intend to use on this axles.
Are both wheels on live axle powered by motor? How do you turn if one tire cant go slower than other like when you use diferential?
zumbazumba1 one of the wheels will slightly lose traction but it will be barely noticeable in a go kart
it can be extremely noticeable...
hey t man I'm building a home made all terrain 2 seater kart im using a 650cc 1981 yamaha xs motor cycle engine im going to do a live axle do you know where i can get one I need it to be about 40" long
sorry J , not sure.
What diameter does the sprocket have to be for a 1 inch axle?
well most of the time it comes down to a 54 tooth sprocket, thats what most beginners use. But be sure to check the chain size that you want to work with. if you have a go kart then its most likely a 41 or a 40 pitch chain.
T-Mans Go Karts thank you. just wanted to be sure
Raphaelis Rodrigues
Would you fix my go kart it has a 16 HP dura last engine . Axel broke
you need two axles, one on each side of the diff like on a car if you want to use a
diff. then you need a brake on each end.
im hve ine trubl take the rear rim off my gokart it has 1 nut holding the rim on it like it stuck on the axl
I would like to build a go kart using a riding mower transaxle and engine.
i am a tottal noob....
but if my axle sprocket has a keyway... Means its not free ...what i mean iw a bicycle sprocket alows you to pedal... but when you stop peddling. it allows you to coast....
so wothout that ability. that means soon as you stop giving it throttle the lower rpms of engine will cause you to slow to a stop correct?
im planning a mini bike build. and was wondering how that all works
no, not totally. when the clutch or torque converter stops engaging from the lower RPMs thats when you'll coast.
T-Mans Go Karts
thanks for fast reply.... so if i get largest torque converter.
T-Mans Go Karts
ok and thats mu next question. is it worth gettint a 212. and doing cam. springs. and stage 1 kit. or just save and run a stock 420 without a governor?
well both engines put out the same RPMs. The 420 has more power but both engines ( at stock ) will give the same speed. If you building a minibike just go with the 212cc. Moding it will give some better performance BUT the engine wont last as long.
Have You ever thought about using a small automotive or golf cart sealed oil filled rear end?
Yep. But I'm not having any luck finding somthing like that. I dont want to buy a new one.
So is welding your sprocket to the axle a terrible idea?
yes, because if you dont get the alignment right then you'll have to grind it away and re do it.
Where do I find a dead axel tire
just the tire or the whole set-up like the rim sprocket and stuff.
The whole setup
@@kelbypressley1288 well , the specific one I have in the video is rare because it is solid ( no bearings) but if you are looking for a set-up with bearings you could go over to BMI karts and get there phone number and call, they could set you up good.
Thank you

Please help me...iam confused...
Iam planning to make a buggy with a 150cc 4stroke bike engine(15bhp).
Is live axle OK for that?
yep, that is what I would use.
@@Tmansgokarts thanks for the reply...can you please suggest a axle length for my buggy...
@@aju5405 well , the largest axle I know of is a 45 inch long. That seems to be the length most people use.
@@Tmansgokarts does it cause turning problems or like that?and what is the reccommented distance between the engine sproket amd axle sproket?does it have any particular angle ?plz help
@@aju5405 ... No , it doesn't need a special angle the just have to be in line with each other.
Thank you, go cart God.
