    Great memories here too. Always loved the sound of that motor at WOT.

    I am partial to 2 strokes. I hav a 30 hp. Evinrude e-tec I bought in 2016. That’s the last of any two strokes in that size class we will see in the US. I plan to keep it running it for the rest of my life.

    Wow that brings back memories. My old man had that same outboard in the 70's, he used it on couple of boats we had. As a little kid everything about the outboard fascinated me, that sound and the way the motor shakes when it starts, the smoke coming from under the water at the exhaust, all the control levers and the connections for the fuel. Most Sundays in the summer we would drive to Chester (UK), and drop the boat in to the river Dee cruise up the river a mile or 2 to a pub that was on the river, then get back in the boat carry on up the river for an hour or so then moor up on the bank and have a picnic and a sin in the river, happy days.

    Love it. I bought a '68 Johnson 40hp and mounted it on my '60 Larson Mariner 14ft. It's such a great little engine. On mine it does 27mph with two people. So sounds about right. Thing runs strong and always fires up.

    This brings back awesome memories - My father owned this engine on a slightly older starcraft boat(not sure exact model), and I remember the RPMs to be higher back when it was running (from when I was old enough to have memories until I was 18 when it was sold(2001 or so)). I'm sure you can get more RPMs/Speed with some tweaking. :)

    Also thank you very much for the advice where I'm at it's not too much marine places that work on older motors so I have to travel far just to get my motor work. So I'm trying to learn a lot to do it myself whenever I can

    And that was back when HP was rated at the flywheel, not the prop. So that's really more like a 35.

    I just got and old 15' Starcraft with this 2 stroke engine... I love the little bote but I'm very discouraged at this point as I don't know anything about boat, I restored the flooring and after almost 3 months I tried the engine and it got on fire. I don't think it caused too much damage as I used an extinguisher right away but I haven't check it... Any positive thoughts on what to do? It is very much appreciated .Thanks!

    it sounds like it might be slightly over propped . did you find out what RPM it's running? I know they rev low, but that sounds 500 rpm or so shy of 4500

    Bought this motor on an old 1962 starcraft runabout 2 years back and the starter has finally reached its breaking point. Im still learning to decipher all the old engine parts and was wondering what starter would fit for this engine? I would appreciate any help, thank you in advance!!

    Hey how can I adjust my throttle/idle. As soon as I start engine I have to hurry and put it in slow because in the start position it revs high. I have a 40el71g but I dont have the pulley system. Also I was told I need a new water impeller and crank seal. Any suggestions or tips on that I mechanically knowledgeable and can learn things quick. Not too many people where I live work on old motors

    I have a 1984 Evanrude Super40. I believe it is identical to the 84 Norsemen. Sold to another part of the world and name something different.
    Is it possible to take a electric start system from a 84 Evan rude and adapted over to the 84 super40.
    My problem is that you damn near have to be the Incredible Hulk to pull start this motor and if you're not paying attention it will pull you right back into it.
    So I'm hope is that I can take the electric start setup off of the 84 Evinrude 40 and it will fit onto the 1984 Evan rude super 40.
    My model № is E40RWCRA

    I did the spark plug thing it did make a difference when I took off one at a time I have not did the looking inside the car and looking at the butterfly thing as of yet also what's a good ratio for gas and oil I hear different things but I feel as though my motor smokes a lot and that it has a lot of oil residue coming out of it or or should I say oil build-up

    • @christate1974
      @christate1974  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are very welcome. It looks like you have spark that's good. You should be running champion j4c plugs gapped at 30. Fuel mix on that engine is 50:1 that is 2.56 ounces of tcw3 per gallon. Make sure your carburetor is opening up all the way at wide open throttle. If it continues to bog down it could be a bad cut out switch. Hope this helps

    • @agraham18
      @agraham18 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christate1974 how will I know if it's really the cut out switch? Would it hurt just to buy a new one and install it? Also would I be getting the whole assembly or just a few parts?

    I have run 40HP like that this one seems slow running like a 28-33HP maybe.Throttle synch out maybe ,low compression?????Well at least it runs somewhat sounds smooth.I know its old but still those motors wind up alot more than that when right just my thoughts and years of experience with those vintage 40S. Great motors all around slightly bulky but managable when moving them around............Glenn P. NY.

    Hey Chris I’ve got this same motor and have a problem. Are you still around? I’ve got full rpms in neutral and reverse but it’s super slow in drive. I would say almost half this rpm. Any idea where I should start?

    • @christate1974
      @christate1974  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eric Kaufman sounds to me like the safety latch on the rope starter is preventing you from going full throttle. Take the cover off with engine not running and put into forward and advance the throttle. It should open the carb all the way open

    I have this motor and it seems as though it drags. It does not get up to maximum speed. It does not even plane. It goes the speed you were going before you increased your speed at beginning of video. Also my idle sucks, it cuts off and also my motor only starts in slow position. What can I do? Any help or tips?

    • @christate1974
      @christate1974  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure the dial pointer is going all the way over when going fast. Better yet with the motor not running and in forward gear open the throttle all the way and look inside the throat of the carb and see if the butterfly is opening all the way. Sounds like a carb rebuild needs to be done if not already

    • @christate1974
      @christate1974  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@agraham18 take the cover off, put the gear selector in forward and make the throttle go wide open. Look in the carburetor with a flashlight and you will see the butterfly move as long as it's not choked. Another test is run it in a barrel of water and pull a spark plug boot off the spark plug with coated pliers so you won't get shocked. Do this on both plugs. If there is no change in how it runs after you remove the boot then that cylinder is not firing. If it sputters and runs rough after you remove the boot then it's firing. You may be running on one cylinder

    • @christate1974
      @christate1974  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andrew Janke Thank you! the plate is a nos transom mounting plate. it is there to protect the fiberglass when you clamp the motor on.

    • @chevyfan8206
      @chevyfan8206 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Tate awesome thank you so much. There is a little movement in my transom (both sides getting squished together. when I say the video I thought one of those plates might be a beneficial investment to fortify and protect the investment.
