As much as I love Enter, did anyone else think the laser beam argument was kind of weak in this case? The Kraang *are* aliens, and this *is* a sci-fi show. It definitely fits the theme of alien invaders with extra-dimensional tech better than an M4, right? And the laser effects are neat and flashy, as well.
Besides, lasers are probably deadlier than guns. A gun can make holes in your body and could be fatal if it hits a specific area. Lasers flat out burn your skin off.
@@reasyrandom It's often argued that lasers cauterize the wound while guns leave horrible bleeding wounds that can get easily infected. To be honest though, I think both are plenty deadly, realistically speaking, though in cartoons energy beams are usually depicted as less dangerous, with characters getting flung backward instead of exploding or burning.
My favorite moment from this entire show has to be this: Michelangelo: "Whatever, man. You just don't wanna admit that you're the 'r' word!" Raphael: "..." Michelangelo: "Wrong."
I specifically remember seeing that moment when my niece was watching and I was getting a snack in the kitchen. It hit me like a well-timed dad joke. It's one of those lines that is funny when it catches you off guard, but it's really not funny in itself.
Honestly any TMNT series is a good starting point What's cool about TMNT is that each incarnation of its TV series doesn't follow previous continuity and can stand on its own, even going from the TV to the original comics they are very different in tone This is the main reason why every generation has a different feel for the ninja turtles
I was introduced through the 1990s live action movies, the first 2 only, and the 2000s cartoon. I haven't watched this one yet but I've heard good things. The 80s one is really hard to go back to now because of how cheesy and 80s it is.
@@ianr.navahuber2195 Transformers does have specific shows being bunched into the same continuity For example, G1, BW, and BM fall into the G1 continuity, with BM ending it. Same thing with Armada, Energon, and Cybertron being bunched into a continuity known as the "Unicron Trilogy". TMNT doesnt follow this, and all shows dont rely on the previous one.
Trust me, things in TMNT being changed drastically is, like, one of the main things about this franchise that's consistent throughout each incarnation. Turtle fans are fine.

Honestly out of all the versions of TMNT this version of Splinter is literally my favorite he just feels way more like an actual father figure then a grandfather or Grandmaster and the turtles feel a lot more like teens in this one

pretty much every incarnation tries its best to be respectful to Splinter, even the 80's version where he was more of a teacher than a father though the 2003 version made Splinter a badass who won an interdimensional fighting tournament so that's a thing that's cool as fuck
@@DaddyDynastic Honestly, it starts awfully, but, whether it was planned, or just course correcting, they actually manage to fully redeem Splinter, for which they deserve at least some credit. He's not like any Splinter seen before, but the end of the season he was probably a lot of people favourite character. Which I *really* wouldn't have believed from his 1st impression. His history and current state makes sense, within that cannon.
lol I never really cared for Splinter that much before TMNT 2012. He always got captured or beaten, and never seemed to fight that much better than the Turtles. Then 2012 Splinter shut me the hell up.

When I tried the series I wasn't expecting to get sucked in to it. For years I've just found the existence of TMNT annoying or forgettable. This really got me to respect the characters
They have deep voices and "Asian" accents, (both characters are Japanese but I wouldn't call either a Japanese accent exactly. Especially from jack) but that's about where the similarities end.. You would think someone that studies cartoons for a living would have a better ear for voice actors.

When Mr. Enter said, "The Splinter in this show", at first I thought he meant the show has an episode that's comparable to that infamous Spongebob episode.
This is, in my opinion, by far the most respectable version of the TMNT. The 80s slang and pizza love was toned down a bit, and the Turtles all became very interesting, well-rounded characters because of it. I found the whole Leonardo and Raphael dynamic particularly compelling!

I’ll admit, when I first found out Kiria was Splinter’s daughter, I was like surprised Patrick. And I really appreciate that they included Bebop and Rocksteady.
As far as "faithful to the source material" is concerned, I've heard that the TMNT franchise as a whole has a layered adaptation. So instead of every version being adapted from the comic books its a case of: Comic Book -> 1987 TV Series -> Movie -> 2003 TV Series -> 2012 TV Series That's the abridged version at least, so I can't imagine many fans saying it's a bad adaptation because they all adopt from each other to the point where it's hard to agree what the pure form of it is.
I have heard that as adapations go, the 2003 series pooled the msot from the actual comics and adapted a couple plotlines wholesale from the comics, but I could be wrong. while ironically the 2012 series pools mroe from the 80's version (the kraang aliens as antagonists, baxter stockman becoming a flyman, antagonsits based on toys and characters from the 80's show etc)
2003 series took the most from the comics with their storylines and character personalities. 2012 pretty much took a bit of something from all other incarnations before it (Mirage, IDW, 80’s & ‘03 cartoon, movies, toys, etc) plus added their own spin on things.
You are missing one TMNT series, but I'm not particularly surprised. Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation is practically unknown...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It wasn't very good. It was a live action series with the majority of characters in low to mid tier quality costumes. The only things worth noting about it are that I don't remember ever seeing April or Casey show up in the series, and they had a fifth turtle. A female named Venus.
“Darkest Plight” has to be the darkest episode of the series. It had so many moments I can’t begin to describe them but the whole atmosphere and tone was hella dark. Psychological horror, almost cannibalism, dismemberment, actual broken bones.
I honestly loved this version of the turtles. I dare say it's the best TV version, but mainly because it's well rounded. The characters, stories, and comedy are really on point in this show.

As a hardcore fan of the franchise it's great to know that someone who is never seen any of the previous incarnations can watch this show and still enjoy it as a whole it shows just how well done this cartoon was
I watched this tv show when I was younger, and yeah when you look at season 1 to season 5 it changes a ton. Yeah the first season is a lot more stale but I'd say it gets better as it goes on. Some episodes are horrific, some are heartbreaking, some are funny, and some are just fun(obviously its a kids show). Also they do have guns later on.
This version of TMNT was the version I grew up with. It just did everything. Space, post-apocalypse, and even vampires AND time-travel in the same arc. It was great. They even had a few appearances of the original TMNT and they called out the differences between the two. God, I loved 2012 TMNT.
AHHHHH! I’ve been waiting for your thoughts on this show since I first discovered your channel back in like 2015 or something. Here’s my thoughts; this is my favorite cartoon of all time, at least it might stay that way for just a while longer. This is the show that made me want to review cartoons, it made me love cartoons and it lead me to other fun pieces of media like the Goonies and Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! While not as consistently serious as the (technically better) 2003 series, this one certainly feels like it was by far, for fans. It understood the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles formula, and knew what to keep and what to change. It had a nice balance of drama and comedy, but I do think the Turtles could be kind of stupid for the sake of the plot (Enemy of my Enemy) This is how you do a reboot, end of discussion. It’s flawed, sure, but you can’t deny the love and passion that went into the show, The 2012 series taught me so much about myself and made me want to create cartoons of my own. Even as a part of me starts to outgrow the 2012 series due to a few of its flaws, this is an underrated Nicktoon by a long shot. I think it’s the best Nicktoon of the 2010’s by far. I do have to thank Nick for striking gold and giving this reboot to just the right people at the right time. Thank you, Enter, you’d made me very happy just by giving this show some light.

One of the best shows in the 2010's, and it may be Nick's second best Action show (Avatar is clearly number 1). It's faithful to the original series (as faithful as PG can be), good action, decent jokes, amazing art style once you get used to it and it's one of the few cartoons that has a Rap intro that doesn't suck! Sadly it got severely screwed by schedule. It got shifted around a LOT during its runtime, to the point that the best way to know if an episode aired is by watching Andre the Black Nerd's channel.

AND yeah, nick (and whoeevr were the producers) really had no idea how to do the shows. they said this about people complaining about megaforce's (the 20th anniversary season) quality: "who cares? only 8 year old people watch this"

They didn't advertise it much, forced the shows to be split into two seasons of twenty episodes, and mandated clip show specials for Halloween and Christmas.

@@JCBro-yg8vd i do really blame nick for the weird "2 seasons, 1 christmas and 1 halloween special. per season. and said specials must always be recaps" clause. althought eah, most of fault were whoever was left in charge of power rangers, when it was clear said person didn't even know about the franchise, while saban god knows what he was doing. they were back on track with dino charge, and ninja steel was like this weird point between samurai and megaforce of not being bad, or good (but it personally made me temporaly quit power rangers and take refugee onsuper sentai due to how much ninja steel wanted to shove us victor and monty). and only went back on track again wih the hasbro deal. although i still don't like the franchise sometimes current over reliance on the Mighty morphin team nostalgia even in comic books. with the only stories so far i have heard it doesn't have the mighty morphin team (either the original team, or the second team, or a new team but with that power set) being the "Beyond the Grid" story and a graphic novel about Andros and Karone hunting Psycho Green

Kevin Michael Richardson plays Happy Dwarf in the 7D cartoon and I just imagine every time Kevin plays a legitimately threatening villain that they secretly sing happy songs and play the ukulele
Never really got TOO into the show, but I really did enjoy the episodes that I did see. (I still remember the wasp episode, the ice cream cat episode, the Karai mutation episode, the Pizza monster episode, etc. though.)
As a "TMNT purist," I can say confidently "there is no single incarnation, and anyone who says otherwise is no true Scotsman." Some are more serious, some are more comedic, some have April as a reporter, others have April as a lab assistant, some have Splinter as originally a rat, others have him originally as a man. All incarnations are judged on their own merits (87 is great, 2003 is great, 90s movie is good, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 is terrible, The Next Mutation is pretty bad, the 2014 movie is OK, and Turtles Forever is the best thing ever). 2012 is a great incarnation, because it balances comedy and action really well.
As a lifelong TMNT fan I can wholeheartedly say this is the quintessential version of the turtles. No other version has come close to being this good IMHO. The amount of fan service they put in is amazing as well. There are so many references to previous TMNT media such as the live action movies, comics, and even other series.
1:53 Yeah no. Every TMNT incarnation has pretty much been its own thing. Also one other thing you've got to praise it for is ending at Season 5. As someone who's grown up with this franchise, just take my word for it that both the 87 and 03 shows really hit seasonal rot at their 5th seasons. Granted the Nick one actually does have references and throwbacks to those shows and the original black and white Mirage comics from 84 as extras for those of us who were familiar with them but its not necessary if this is your first TMNT series. Especially when they have just as many new characters and ideas of their own. But I get what you're saying. That is legitimately the reason why I have never touched Dr. Who.
For the purist of TMNT this series... This series... THIS SERIES IS AWESOME! SO MANY EASTER EGGS, SO MANY WAYS THEY MADE HOMAGES TO EVERY INCARNATION OF THE TURTLES THIS IS THE BEST SERIES AND I LOVE IT!
I’m so happy someone like you in the cartoon community finally touched on this show and recognized just how great it was. Even though I prefer the 2003 series (which I think you should touch on in the future, I know you briefly did with Fast Forward a while back) the 2012 series is really good. It’s what got me into Ninja Turtles.
From a long time TMNT fan's perspective, this was a fabulous show. The animation was solid, the action well paced and, at times, visceral, the characters were just as likeable as the 80s show, especially the rivalry between Raphael and Casey Jones. It was just a great show, although I never really finished watching it. No time like the present, eh? Also, Kevin Michael Richardson voicing Shredder was a solid choice. Shredder in the 80s cartoon was always a goofball. He could certainly be a threat, but he was a pussycat for the most part. Shredder in this show was proper pants-shittingly threatening. He *WAS* a proper threat, someone who could go toe-to-toe with anyone and still come out on top. Not to mention how terrifying he was, especially his voice. I feel though that they went with a black actor for Shredder as a fan nod to James Avery's role as Shredder back in the 80s. Although, technically Dorian Harewood also voiced Shredder for a few episodes.
I’ve been with this show since 2014. Found it online and binged all the episodes that were out and kept watching every other consecutive one until the show eventually ended. I am SO happy that you were pleasantly surprised by the show, I was never really into TMNT either until this series, but I loved it to absolute death. It reminded me of Teen Titans, like you mentioned. Which I was a huge fan of as a little kid. But back on this show- I love it. I’ve loved it for years. And I’m SUPER stoked that you enjoyed it too ^^
April has the most drastic changes pretty much every iteration of turtles. This version actually has one of the most fleshed out versions of her characters and made her the definitive April for me.
*Fun Fact:* TMNT is based on the true story... Chuck Norris ate a turtle, then goes to the bathroom. As a result, the turtle grew five feet tall and learned karate.
Ciro Nieli, the show-runner for this series, actually worked on Teen Titans, as well as Super-Robot-Monkey-Team Hyperforce-Go, so that’s why this show shares a lot of its qualities 🙂
I recently got into this series with the IDW comic run that happened along side this show, and holy cow are both this show and the IDW comic masterpieces with different takes on the same concept. This show is a bit more out there and silly, but it can be really emotional and fun especially in season 2 and beyond. The IDW comic is much more serious and I kind of get the whole "if you were color blind you might not know which turtle is which" with this comic, but this is the best interpretation of everything that's come before it in this series. It recently hit it's 100th issue, technically 200th canonical issue, too so there's a lot of content to dig into. It starts off a bit rough but when it gets to the Secret History of the Foot Clan side series and the City Fall arc it almost never misses a beat. There are even payoffs in issue 100 that were set up in issue 1 which is freaking insane. I get the impression that you've only watched season 1 of this show. MrEnter you are doing yourself a big disservice by not watching the rest of the show as season 1 is pretty meh, they hadn't found their footing yet, and season 2 through 5 are freaking amazing for the most part. I'd also recommend checking out the IDW comic as it's probably the best interpretation of the franchise so far. It is more adult oriented than the shows as well which is easier for the older crowd to get into than this show. The channel Starforce media has a good motion comic version of everything, including the very important side issues, up to the end of the City Fall arc, this is about a quarter of the comic so far. Since there's been a recent deal between Netflix and Nickelodeon there have been murmurs of a live action TMNT show based off the original comics. I hope this happens and I hope they take a lot from the IDW comics as well as the reincarnation origin story, villains like Alopex and Kitsune, and the mythos of that comic run would work really well in a more serious live action show like that.
this is one of my favorite shows, it got me into TMNT, i was glad you had such good things to say about it, wish i could've heard you praise it more. as i was watching i had a moment where i sat there and thought about how if they used actual guns in the show it would've changed the entire vibe in a way i find exciting and horrifying at the same time. by the way, i would like to know how much you watched of the show, was it just a couple seasons? would you watch the whole thing? or do you have too many other things going on to sit down and binge? just curious.
This show means so much to me honestly, it's part of why I also really want to make awesome children's media, stuff that's relatively clean and family friendly but also just that, good for the whole family. It's real and doesn't treat all kids like toddlers, and tells some real meaningful stories with characters that grow and can be learned from. It got me back into art and developing my own style after my huge Warrior Cats phase. My life wouldn't be the same without it, which sounds dramatic but it's true. I honestly want to make my own review of it and some of the episodes, but who knows. Thanks for your thoughts man!

Something you might wanna look up is the comic crossover of this Turtles show and Batman: TAS, it's amazing. Also, without spoiling anything in the series going forward, trust me, there is NO shortage of ACTUAL violence in the latter seasons. Guns may be more intimidating than lasers, but swords and blades are just as well.
2012 is about the happy medium between the 1980's TMNT and 2000's TMNT when it comes to darkness, and I think this is the best of the bunch for that reason. Actually, how is Rise exactly in terms of quality?
I still can't get most of the hate for this show. At first, I had similar feelings, due to changes like April being a teen, Irma being a Kraang, Splinter dieing, and how the Kraang acted. But as I watched it more, I began to love it the same way I did Teen Titans, Batman: The Animated Series, Avatar, and a few other shows I like.
The funny thing about the voice acting in this show is, Rob Paulsen voices Donatello here, and he was the voice of Raphel in the 80's cartoon. There's even a crossover episode where they lampshade the fact that Rob voices both characters (that episode got all the 80's VAs back together, except for Shredder since his original VA from the 80's had died. In another crossover they had Kevin Michael Richardson voice match for James Avery).
This is my favorite iteration of the turtles from the animation, to the characters to the overarching plots. It's not perfect but it's one of the few shows I'd urge people thinking of watching to watch ASAP. Also I liked the changes they made to April, it made her a better character instead of the sexy eye candy she was originally intended to be.
This was my first proper introduction to the TMNT series (not including the random 2003 episode I saw when I was younger). Still one of my favorite shows. They really poured their heart into this show and found unique ways to include different easter eggs.
I have such fond memories of this show, it was the first version of the turtles I watched ever and I wasn't disappointed. Good and Likeable characters Good animation Story arcs Great new mutant designs This is what you want from a reboot, it changed enough to be original but not too much to where it was completely different.
Speaking as someone who was born in 1988 and grew up with the original TMNT and was a huge fan, I actually think this version is my favorite version of TMNT. It has the perfect blend of Action and Comedy, It pays homage to the other versions of the franchise while still doing its own thing, and it knows how to be serious when the situation calls for it without being jarring. This show and Transformers Animated are the Gold Standard on how to do a reboot of a long running franchise.
I remembered the day when the trailer of this show came out and everyone HATED IT because it looked very Over-the-top compared to previous TMNT incarnations, but when the show actually DID come out everyone (including me) was surprised at how good it was, considering it was yet ANOTHER (TV broadcasting series) remake that practically aired after the 2003 cartoon ended. At first it seemed we were getting too many remakes way too fast, but this only proved if there is ANY franchise you *can* remake over and over again (let alone make it *good)* it's TMNT. Now part of me is wishing they made a live-action series meant for adults on Netflix using the Jim Henson Creature Shop on the Turtles costumes like they did in the first two (of the three) movies, except make them more detailed to show that practical effects have come a long way since the 90's. Until then I can say that in my personal opinion; this is the best TMNT adaptation yet. I mean how many TMNT series' have a Mad Max Style story arc (which was also one of their last)? (that's a rhetorical question btw)
2003 was better in every way except april was better in this version, i hate this show so much, it felt like vulchers eating at tmnt's corpse that didn't even have time to be buried.

I loved this series so much. :D This was the introduction to TMNT for me as well, basically for the same reason as Enter's. I was born in the early 90's, and it was just never on my radar until the 2012 version came out. I used to watch it with my parents every now and then too. And this is easily one of the few times when stupid rap theme songs actually works well, in my opinion. Every one of the characters had loads of personality. Every one except for Oroku Saki, better known as the Shredder. I mean, I get he's MEANT to be a hate sink, but holy fucking shit, he just went so very very far beyond a hate sink, to the point where Ch'rell could be proud. His entire personality is KILL SPLINTER KILL SPLINTER KILL FUCKING SPLINTER. He practically ruled the entire criminal underworld, was wealthy beyond his wildest dreams due to said criminal underworld, and stole Splinter's daughter after trying *and failing* to kill him, while also murdering Splinter's wife Tang Shen. He essentially won the fucking "rivalry", but he was just absolutely fucking OBSESSED with murdering Splinter and the Turtles, to the point where he allowed the world to fucking end via Triceraton Armaggedon because he stabbed Splinter mere seconds before the wise rat could stop the Black Hole Generator. His obsession became such a driving point for him that he allowed himself to be mutated into a fucking abomination, going even more psychotic than he already was. When Leo finally decapitated that bastard, literally nobody cried.

As much as I love Enter, did anyone else think the laser beam argument was kind of weak in this case? The Kraang *are* aliens, and this *is* a sci-fi show. It definitely fits the theme of alien invaders with extra-dimensional tech better than an M4, right? And the laser effects are neat and flashy, as well.
Besides, lasers are probably deadlier than guns. A gun can make holes in your body and could be fatal if it hits a specific area. Lasers flat out burn your skin off.

It's often argued that lasers cauterize the wound while guns leave horrible bleeding wounds that can get easily infected.
To be honest though, I think both are plenty deadly, realistically speaking, though in cartoons energy beams are usually depicted as less dangerous, with characters getting flung backward instead of exploding or burning.

I was introduced through the 1990s live action movies, the first 2 only, and the 2000s cartoon. I haven't watched this one yet but I've heard good things. The 80s one is really hard to go back to now because of how cheesy and 80s it is.

Honestly out of all the versions of TMNT this version of Splinter is literally my favorite he just feels way more like an actual father figure then a grandfather or Grandmaster and the turtles feel a lot more like teens in this one

pretty much every incarnation tries its best to be respectful to Splinter, even the 80's version where he was more of a teacher than a father

They have deep voices and "Asian" accents, (both characters are Japanese but I wouldn't call either a Japanese accent exactly. Especially from jack) but that's about where the similarities end.. You would think someone that studies cartoons for a living would have a better ear for voice actors.

When Mr. Enter said, "The Splinter in this show", at first I thought he meant the show has an episode that's comparable to that infamous Spongebob episode.
This is, in my opinion, by far the most respectable version of the TMNT. The 80s slang and pizza love was toned down a bit, and the Turtles all became very interesting, well-rounded characters because of it. I found the whole Leonardo and Raphael dynamic particularly compelling!

As far as "faithful to the source material" is concerned, I've heard that the TMNT franchise as a whole has a layered adaptation. So instead of every version being adapted from the comic books its a case of:
Comic Book -> 1987 TV Series -> Movie -> 2003 TV Series -> 2012 TV Series
That's the abridged version at least, so I can't imagine many fans saying it's a bad adaptation because they all adopt from each other to the point where it's hard to agree what the pure form of it is.

I have heard that as adapations go, the 2003 series pooled the msot from the actual comics and adapted a couple plotlines wholesale from the comics, but I could be wrong.

2003 series took the most from the comics with their storylines and character personalities.

You are missing one TMNT series, but I'm not particularly surprised. Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation is practically unknown...which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It wasn't very good. It was a live action series with the majority of characters in low to mid tier quality costumes. The only things worth noting about it are that I don't remember ever seeing April or Casey show up in the series, and they had a fifth turtle. A female named Venus.

“Darkest Plight” has to be the darkest episode of the series. It had so many moments I can’t begin to describe them but the whole atmosphere and tone was hella dark. Psychological horror, almost cannibalism, dismemberment, actual broken bones.
That episode was loosely adapted from the “City at War” comics. Loved that episode so much, really showed how intense the show could be.
I honestly loved this version of the turtles. I dare say it's the best TV version, but mainly because it's well rounded. The characters, stories, and comedy are really on point in this show.
2003, it is as well rounded as a triangle.

I watched this tv show when I was younger, and yeah when you look at season 1 to season 5 it changes a ton. Yeah the first season is a lot more stale but I'd say it gets better as it goes on. Some episodes are horrific, some are heartbreaking, some are funny, and some are just fun(obviously its a kids show). Also they do have guns later on.

This version of TMNT was the version I grew up with. It just did everything. Space, post-apocalypse, and even vampires AND time-travel in the same arc. It was great. They even had a few appearances of the original TMNT and they called out the differences between the two. God, I loved 2012 TMNT.

AHHHHH! I’ve been waiting for your thoughts on this show since I first discovered your channel back in like 2015 or something. Here’s my thoughts; this is my favorite cartoon of all time, at least it might stay that way for just a while longer. This is the show that made me want to review cartoons, it made me love cartoons and it lead me to other fun pieces of media like the Goonies and Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! While not as consistently serious as the (technically better) 2003 series, this one certainly feels like it was by far, for fans. It understood the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles formula, and knew what to keep and what to change. It had a nice balance of drama and comedy, but I do think the Turtles could be kind of stupid for the sake of the plot (Enemy of my Enemy) This is how you do a reboot, end of discussion. It’s flawed, sure, but you can’t deny the love and passion that went into the show, The 2012 series taught me so much about myself and made me want to create cartoons of my own. Even as a part of me starts to outgrow the 2012 series due to a few of its flaws, this is an underrated Nicktoon by a long shot. I think it’s the best Nicktoon of the 2010’s by far. I do have to thank Nick for striking gold and giving this reboot to just the right people at the right time. Thank you, Enter, you’d made me very happy just by giving this show some light.

One of the best shows in the 2010's, and it may be Nick's second best Action show (Avatar is clearly number 1). It's faithful to the original series (as faithful as PG can be), good action, decent jokes, amazing art style once you get used to it and it's one of the few cartoons that has a Rap intro that doesn't suck!
Sadly it got severely screwed by schedule. It got shifted around a LOT during its runtime, to the point that the best way to know if an episode aired is by watching Andre the Black Nerd's channel.

They didn't advertise it much, forced the shows to be split into two seasons of twenty episodes, and mandated clip show specials for Halloween and Christmas.

although i still don't like the franchise sometimes current over reliance on the Mighty morphin team nostalgia even in comic books. with the only stories so far i have heard it doesn't have the mighty morphin team (either the original team, or the second team, or a new team but with that power set) being the "Beyond the Grid" story and a graphic novel about Andros and Karone hunting Psycho Green

Never really got TOO into the show, but I really did enjoy the episodes that I did see.
(I still remember the wasp episode, the ice cream cat episode, the Karai mutation episode, the Pizza monster episode, etc. though.)

As a "TMNT purist," I can say confidently "there is no single incarnation, and anyone who says otherwise is no true Scotsman." Some are more serious, some are more comedic, some have April as a reporter, others have April as a lab assistant, some have Splinter as originally a rat, others have him originally as a man. All incarnations are judged on their own merits (87 is great, 2003 is great, 90s movie is good, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 is terrible, The Next Mutation is pretty bad, the 2014 movie is OK, and Turtles Forever is the best thing ever). 2012 is a great incarnation, because it balances comedy and action really well.
Rabbids Invasion will be a fun one to take a look at...
Technically neither was The Penguins of Madagascar, and on that note, any of the other Dreamworks spin-offs...
Honestly, 2012 is my favourite version of TMNT. I feel like it's a perfect balance between the style and tone of the 87 and 03 cartoon.
As a lifelong TMNT fan I can wholeheartedly say this is the quintessential version of the turtles. No other version has come close to being this good IMHO. The amount of fan service they put in is amazing as well. There are so many references to previous TMNT media such as the live action movies, comics, and even other series.
It’s so weird that a show called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles even exists.

1:53 Yeah no. Every TMNT incarnation has pretty much been its own thing. Also one other thing you've got to praise it for is ending at Season 5. As someone who's grown up with this franchise, just take my word for it that both the 87 and 03 shows really hit seasonal rot at their 5th seasons. Granted the Nick one actually does have references and throwbacks to those shows and the original black and white Mirage comics from 84 as extras for those of us who were familiar with them but its not necessary if this is your first TMNT series. Especially when they have just as many new characters and ideas of their own.
But I get what you're saying. That is legitimately the reason why I have never touched Dr. Who.

I’m so happy someone like you in the cartoon community finally touched on this show and recognized just how great it was. Even though I prefer the 2003 series (which I think you should touch on in the future, I know you briefly did with Fast Forward a while back) the 2012 series is really good. It’s what got me into Ninja Turtles.

From a long time TMNT fan's perspective, this was a fabulous show. The animation was solid, the action well paced and, at times, visceral, the characters were just as likeable as the 80s show, especially the rivalry between Raphael and Casey Jones. It was just a great show, although I never really finished watching it. No time like the present, eh?
Also, Kevin Michael Richardson voicing Shredder was a solid choice. Shredder in the 80s cartoon was always a goofball. He could certainly be a threat, but he was a pussycat for the most part. Shredder in this show was proper pants-shittingly threatening. He *WAS* a proper threat, someone who could go toe-to-toe with anyone and still come out on top. Not to mention how terrifying he was, especially his voice. I feel though that they went with a black actor for Shredder as a fan nod to James Avery's role as Shredder back in the 80s. Although, technically Dorian Harewood also voiced Shredder for a few episodes.
The best way to describe this show is basically is the teen titans reboot people actually wanted , mainly due creator also working on that as well .

My first introduction to the ninja turtles was the 2003 show.
I’ve been with this show since 2014. Found it online and binged all the episodes that were out and kept watching every other consecutive one until the show eventually ended. I am SO happy that you were pleasantly surprised by the show, I was never really into TMNT either until this series, but I loved it to absolute death. It reminded me of Teen Titans, like you mentioned. Which I was a huge fan of as a little kid. But back on this show- I love it. I’ve loved it for years. And I’m SUPER stoked that you enjoyed it too ^^
April has the most drastic changes pretty much every iteration of turtles. This version actually has one of the most fleshed out versions of her characters and made her the definitive April for me.

Ciro Nieli, the show-runner for this series, actually worked on Teen Titans, as well as Super-Robot-Monkey-Team Hyperforce-Go, so that’s why this show shares a lot of its qualities 🙂

I recently got into this series with the IDW comic run that happened along side this show, and holy cow are both this show and the IDW comic masterpieces with different takes on the same concept. This show is a bit more out there and silly, but it can be really emotional and fun especially in season 2 and beyond. The IDW comic is much more serious and I kind of get the whole "if you were color blind you might not know which turtle is which" with this comic, but this is the best interpretation of everything that's come before it in this series. It recently hit it's 100th issue, technically 200th canonical issue, too so there's a lot of content to dig into. It starts off a bit rough but when it gets to the Secret History of the Foot Clan side series and the City Fall arc it almost never misses a beat. There are even payoffs in issue 100 that were set up in issue 1 which is freaking insane.
I get the impression that you've only watched season 1 of this show. MrEnter you are doing yourself a big disservice by not watching the rest of the show as season 1 is pretty meh, they hadn't found their footing yet, and season 2 through 5 are freaking amazing for the most part. I'd also recommend checking out the IDW comic as it's probably the best interpretation of the franchise so far. It is more adult oriented than the shows as well which is easier for the older crowd to get into than this show. The channel Starforce media has a good motion comic version of everything, including the very important side issues, up to the end of the City Fall arc, this is about a quarter of the comic so far.
Since there's been a recent deal between Netflix and Nickelodeon there have been murmurs of a live action TMNT show based off the original comics. I hope this happens and I hope they take a lot from the IDW comics as well as the reincarnation origin story, villains like Alopex and Kitsune, and the mythos of that comic run would work really well in a more serious live action show like that.
TMNT 2012, was my favorite show to come out of recent Nick. It doesn't top 03 as my favorite interpretation of the Turtles but it's up there.

this is one of my favorite shows, it got me into TMNT, i was glad you had such good things to say about it, wish i could've heard you praise it more. as i was watching i had a moment where i sat there and thought about how if they used actual guns in the show it would've changed the entire vibe in a way i find exciting and horrifying at the same time. by the way, i would like to know how much you watched of the show, was it just a couple seasons? would you watch the whole thing? or do you have too many other things going on to sit down and binge? just curious.
This show means so much to me honestly, it's part of why I also really want to make awesome children's media, stuff that's relatively clean and family friendly but also just that, good for the whole family. It's real and doesn't treat all kids like toddlers, and tells some real meaningful stories with characters that grow and can be learned from. It got me back into art and developing my own style after my huge Warrior Cats phase. My life wouldn't be the same without it, which sounds dramatic but it's true. I honestly want to make my own review of it and some of the episodes, but who knows. Thanks for your thoughts man!

Something you might wanna look up is the comic crossover of this Turtles show and Batman: TAS, it's amazing. Also, without spoiling anything in the series going forward, trust me, there is NO shortage of ACTUAL violence in the latter seasons. Guns may be more intimidating than lasers, but swords and blades are just as well.
2012 is about the happy medium between the 1980's TMNT and 2000's TMNT when it comes to darkness, and I think this is the best of the bunch for that reason. Actually, how is Rise exactly in terms of quality?

I still can't get most of the hate for this show.
At first, I had similar feelings, due to changes like April being a teen, Irma being a Kraang, Splinter dieing, and how the Kraang acted.
But as I watched it more, I began to love it the same way I did Teen Titans, Batman: The Animated Series, Avatar, and a few other shows I like.
The funny thing about the voice acting in this show is, Rob Paulsen voices Donatello here, and he was the voice of Raphel in the 80's cartoon. There's even a crossover episode where they lampshade the fact that Rob voices both characters (that episode got all the 80's VAs back together, except for Shredder since his original VA from the 80's had died. In another crossover they had Kevin Michael Richardson voice match for James Avery).
This is my favorite iteration of the turtles from the animation, to the characters to the overarching plots. It's not perfect but it's one of the few shows I'd urge people thinking of watching to watch ASAP. Also I liked the changes they made to April, it made her a better character instead of the sexy eye candy she was originally intended to be.

This was my first proper introduction to the TMNT series (not including the random 2003 episode I saw when I was younger). Still one of my favorite shows. They really poured their heart into this show and found unique ways to include different easter eggs.

Speaking as someone who was born in 1988 and grew up with the original TMNT and was a huge fan, I actually think this version is my favorite version of TMNT. It has the perfect blend of Action and Comedy, It pays homage to the other versions of the franchise while still doing its own thing, and it knows how to be serious when the situation calls for it without being jarring.
This show and Transformers Animated are the Gold Standard on how to do a reboot of a long running franchise.
I remembered the day when the trailer of this show came out and everyone HATED IT because it looked very Over-the-top compared to previous TMNT incarnations, but when the show actually DID come out everyone (including me) was surprised at how good it was, considering it was yet ANOTHER (TV broadcasting series) remake that practically aired after the 2003 cartoon ended.
At first it seemed we were getting too many remakes way too fast, but this only proved if there is ANY franchise you *can* remake over and over again (let alone make it *good)* it's TMNT.
Now part of me is wishing they made a live-action series meant for adults on Netflix using the Jim Henson Creature Shop on the Turtles costumes like they did in the first two (of the three) movies, except make them more detailed to show that practical effects have come a long way since the 90's.
Until then I can say that in my personal opinion; this is the best TMNT adaptation yet.

Surprised how long we spent on laser based weapons being an issue in a sci-fi cartoon with aliens & mutant turtles. Do we really need realistic guns in a world where people are fighting with ninja weapons

I loved this series so much. :D This was the introduction to TMNT for me as well, basically for the same reason as Enter's. I was born in the early 90's, and it was just never on my radar until the 2012 version came out. I used to watch it with my parents every now and then too. And this is easily one of the few times when stupid rap theme songs actually works well, in my opinion.
Every one of the characters had loads of personality. Every one except for Oroku Saki, better known as the Shredder. I mean, I get he's MEANT to be a hate sink, but holy fucking shit, he just went so very very far beyond a hate sink, to the point where Ch'rell could be proud. His entire personality is KILL SPLINTER KILL SPLINTER KILL FUCKING SPLINTER. He practically ruled the entire criminal underworld, was wealthy beyond his wildest dreams due to said criminal underworld, and stole Splinter's daughter after trying *and failing* to kill him, while also murdering Splinter's wife Tang Shen.
He essentially won the fucking "rivalry", but he was just absolutely fucking OBSESSED with murdering Splinter and the Turtles, to the point where he allowed the world to fucking end via Triceraton Armaggedon because he stabbed Splinter mere seconds before the wise rat could stop the Black Hole Generator. His obsession became such a driving point for him that he allowed himself to be mutated into a fucking abomination, going even more psychotic than he already was. When Leo finally decapitated that bastard, literally nobody cried.
