      I am not very good at Basketry,I am fired up at trying it one more time before I leave this life,I tried Basket making when I was 15 yrs old and had fun doing it but due to Financial hardship ventured out on other things, but never let Basketry leave my mind.
      I am 77 years now and I loves baskets to the point I do sell Baskets, my Fascination with Basketry is Phenomenal and I want to make A Basket now I have the Opportunity to make my DREAM come Through/TRUE.

      Hahahaha I think they are different willow than what you are thinking, but maybe it would still work. I think you are thinking weeping willows. The girl in the video grows these thin sticks from nobs in Ireland.

      Pussy willow is what we have in the states down near any pond or river. All sorts of colors and sizes. Late winter early spring is best time to get them when they aren't all sappy

      You may want to wipe your red willow with a cloth containing varsol or paint thinner because the red willow ( dog wood ) has a sticky coat on its bark that is some what irritating.

    Thank you so much for your tutorial! I have been wanting to experiment with weed weaving and collected a bunch of dock stems, dried and soaked them, and managed to follow this tutorial! My basket is nowhere near as neat as yours, but it's strong enough to hold a bunch of bananas. I just need to peg the handle- I used hazel for it- but it's gone midnight now and I'm not up for fiddling around with sharp objects :)

    This is an absolutely beautiful basket thank you so much for showing us how to do it. I have been weaving with fresh materials some willow some dogwood, hazel and brambles. However I am finding that after time they go loose. Does anyone know how long to leave a cut piece so it does not shrink or is it the case that all material have to be dried first and then soaked?

    • @HannaVanAelst
      @HannaVanAelst  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes I would recommend you dry your willow first before soaking again tobuse to stop the basket becoming loose. However it is possible to use semi green willow, dogwood and Hazel. This means you can use it after a few weeks, or longer depending on drying conditions. When the willow starts going wrinkly but is still flexible.

    I just have to comment and say thank you. I've been wanting to weave my own baskets since I was literally a child, and I can't tell you how many tutorials I've watched that are just packed full of the weavers ideology and beliefs. I appreciate that, truly, but I also think the actual all facts tutorial is a little more important... How do you get people involved if you never show them how to do it? So thank you, thank you so so much for truly giving a very clear, step by step, tutorial! Blessed be!

    Thank you so much for this video, Hanna. I have recently found your TH-cam channel and instagram and am making preparations to plant willow on my own farm. I have a quick question about the video instructions. How do you first get started with the second wale? When you move from the French rounding back to the wale, do you thread the tips of the new weavers into the row below, as you did pushing them into the base? I guess I was just a little unsure how to get that top wale started.
    Thank you!

    • @HannaVanAelst
      @HannaVanAelst  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yes you push the rods for the wale into the weaving, beside 3 consecutive uprights. That way they are ankered in. Enjoy weaving!

    Hi Hanna, thank you so much for this tutorial! looking forward to making this. Just curious, why did you chose 2 uprights per spoke? Does it have to do more with aesthetics or practicality? I've seen others make small baskets with only 1 upright per spoke so I was curious if that would work with this tutorial as well. Thanks!

      Wrap it in a damp towel or blanket for the night or even a day or two. If the uprights are getting really dry you can 'top up' by leaving the entire basket in your soaking tank for a day or so....

My only question is, I was confused when you started weaving the sides you said, "And I'm starting on opposite sides so I have 3 weavers on opposite side doing chasing." What did you mean by "starting on opposite sides?" Opposite sides of what? Thank you! I have never woven a basket before. ^_^

    • @HannaVanAelst

      opposite sides of the basket. It is something hard to understand, needs to be shown. But you don't need to do chasing, you can just start on one side and keep on weaving.
