Dylan, Thank you for the great content! I noticed the YoY change when there is a percentage input, the output shows the percentage points and not the actual change. For example at 4:45 Automotive gross margin increased by 11.7 % or three percentage points. Perhaps it's intentional, but I figured it was worth a mention in case it wasn't. Looking forward to earnings tomorrow. all the best /Sweden
was waiting for someone to call that out! lol i originally had it as the actual % increase change for % based metrics (which would be 11.7% for auto gross margin as you said) but then changed the percentages to be raw metric increases. perhaps i will switch back to keep things consistent!
update: decided to switch it to keep the yoy % increases consistent, even for the percentage based metrics. thanks for mentioning this, i do prefer this method as anyone can still look and do the simple math to see the raw percentage point increase

Tesla already has an annual production run rate of 1+ million vehicles.
Last I read Giga Shanghai is producing 3,000 EVs per day, about 1,200 MY and 800 M3. Assuming 350 work days per year that is 1,050,000 EV per year. Once GFs Texas and Berlin are at full speed in another year that will be 4+ million per year and probably much more. By then more GFs will have been underway or expansion of current ones. Things look good to me. New Megapack factory will be in production in a years time in Lathrop, CA. Megapacks are going to become big business, already sold out for 2022.

The financial analysis I’d like to see, which i can’t find elsewhere, is a line by line comparison to some other automakers using the metrics in your spreadsheet (like automotive gross margin).

In the UK, insurance companies supply your insurance details to the Driver and Licence Authority (DVLA). Police can use ANPR (Automated Number Plate Recognition) - a dash-mounted camera system in police cars - to photograph your number plate (tag plate), and can istantly know if your car is road legal. The DVLA also holds the data about the car's annual roadworthy inspection (known as the MOT Certificate).
In this way, cops can follow a car, and the camera reads the licence plate. In a matter of seconds, they know if the car is roadworthy and/or insured.

you should probably differentiate between "percent" and "base points" in your excel sheets! margins didnt grow "by 10 percent", they grew "by 260% " or by "1000 base points. (from 6,3 to 16,4 is like a 2,5x)

It's a bit confusing to mix percentage increases and basis points like that. For example 25.6% to 28.6% is a 11.7% increase, unless you're talking basis points in which case it's 300 basis points. If you just call it 3%, it seems way less than it actually is. Especially compared to the other percentages used which are relative numbers instead of basis points.

Regardless of how good earnings are or if they have significant beats across the board, tsla stock price is likely to retreat due to the macro anti high valuation rotation. Hope I’m wrong. With a ~300 PE prior to the earnings call, beats and record deliveries are baked in the cake.

Re Tesla insurance frustration. First max policy length is 6 mo. Second they stopped sending out new insurance cards and now it is up to the user to go get the new one every 6 mo from the app or website. Question, is there another way to open the glovebox to retrieve the registration and Insurance card if the car were disabled in an accident and the police ask for them?

Pull the cover off, and in the middle front there is an unlableed bolt (it has a black plus sign in front of it, hard to see). Apply the positive lead to that bolt, and ground the other cable on the car somewhere and wait a few minutes. The car will wake up and you can get into your glove box."

The figures for Tesla tell a story of incredible manufacturing prowess. For the auto industry this is unprecedented. Apart from VW there has been little or no comment about this from legacy auto. It's no wonder because it turns out Tesla is better at manufacturing than those that should be the best given their 100 years+ in the business.
So where is the money coming from for these investments? They're already up to their necks in debt, and this is only going to make that bigger. So even if they managed to make EVs at the same factory cost of Tesla (they won't get close) a big chunk of any what little profits they make will go into servicing the debt.
Biden and his administration are buying new wheelbarrows to transport all the Tax Money they are giving GM. In 2008 GM cost every tax paying American $65. In 2022 it will be another $85. When your taxes go up, keep that in mind.

selling a EV is only part of the deal Mary you need the infrastructure for charging GM and Ford is leaving the customers out in the cold with no play to charge. if think they only going charge at home.
Poor Mary. My projection for Tesla's North American production by Q4 2025 is about 3.5-4 million vehicles. Asia and Europe will likely be another 4 million.

I am a big Tesla fan and retired on Tesla stock however what are your thoughts about Tesla saying they have to raise car prices due to raising costs despite their margins going up? Tesla and Elon have said previously that they are trying to decrease prices so more people can buy a Tesla but their actions are not living up to that statement.

Hmmm, investment grade. Do you suppose there might be some consideration to the stability of the stock value. It's a little scary to have a stock swing from $1,243 to $890 or today's $918. I sold all of my Tesla at about $1,050- and just bought it back at $925. TSLA seems more like a traders stock than a secure investment. Remember the golden rule, buy low and sell high.

WHY does the stock fluctuate?
TSLA is not a “secure investment “. Not sure where you got that or why it would be an investment goal, unless maybe you are retiring soon or retired. Tesla is a high growth with low risk over multi-year investment windows. Unless that was an IRA (in the USA) your trade was a loss net taxes.
Depends on whether you are an investor or speculator. If an Investor, the stock has been doing Very well. If a speculator, it swings wildly with the wind.

So Tesla has $16billion in on hand cash. $6.4 billion of long term debt as of 9/21 and dropping quarterly for 3 quarters. Very profitable every quarter in a steep upward spiral for more than 2 years.
Their last quarter will see these numbers improve substantially.
Much better prospects with 2 major factories poised to more than double output over the next 18 months.
These massive factories have the ability to support about 5million car output between them when fully utilized.
Meaning Tesla can continue to ramp rapidly without starting a new factory in 2022 and 2023.
(Though intentions are to proceed with at least 1 new factory start in 2023.- Likely waiting for the $25k "not model 2" for the Indian market where it should be quite well received.)
GM has massive headwinds of debt to accrue transitioning to EV production and simply Hold on to their (shrinking) market share.
They have massive debt today.
They produced less than 100 EVs in 2021 and its not clear if they can profitably produce EVs in 2022.
Long term Debt is more than 3x Cash on hand and piling up with EV conversion expenditures still ahead.
Margins in the new EV world are threatened for the next couple of years at the least.
Yet Moody's rates GM at Baa2 and Baa3 (1 and 2 levels Above Tesla).
The ratings are fantasy... echoes of a past long gone.
Don't know who uses these ratings (certainly not the banks Tesla has been borrowing from in the last couple of years).
Don't see any use for them.
They are clearly worthless for determining risk.
Gm needs to understand Tesla is open to mergers and will not do a forced takeover. If you care about shares holders that the best option.

Wow,, GM! 1,000,000 BEVs by 2025. Even tiny little Volvo will produce 600,000 BEVs and 600,000 hybrids by 2025. Not to mention, Polestar will sell 290,000 BEVs by then, many of them produced in Volvo factories.

But Volvo will still be profitable at only 700,000 sales,, and they'll probably be at 2,000,000 BEV sales by 2030. Still a niche player, but doing very well.And I think Polestar will be near 500,000 sales themselves. I think if SMR started studying Volvo for the next few weeks as intensely as he studies Tesla, he'd agree.
