What a worthy contribution to the historical record: Juan Diego Flórez was, here, _marvelous_ at 26 years old! Still, if you look at his contributions since then, you may find that his vocal tone has improved with age. (As an instrumentalist, I find the process by which top singers evolve almost inscrutable.)
I agree & really felt for that poor horn player in the introduction - how embarrassing! No doubt note perfect throughout the remainder of the opera. Juan Diego just appears to improve like the finest wine. In my opinion he has no equal.
This brings back wonderful memories for me. My second time attending the Metropolitan Opera was "L'Italiana in Algeri" with Olga Borodina .... and Juan Diego Florez. I'm not sure anybody has sounded more wonderful in this rep.
This is by far the most captivating performance of Languir per una bella that I have seen. Thank you for posting this! I see that other comments quibble about whether this is the best, comparing this live performance to studio and concert performances which are completely different situations. Opera was meant to be enjoyed in its entirety...singing, acting, staging. IMO, this energetic and heartfelt performance by a youthful JDF is unmatched, even by JDF himself. I also see a few comments about JDF looking tired...perhaps he was just bummed out by the horrible horn solo. It would be great if this entire performance of L'Italiana could be edited for video quality and posted (wishful thinking, I know).
@@fraser_macd_composer I just listened to Mingjei Lei's performance at the 2017 Neue Stimmen, and his coloratura, especially at the end of the aria, does not sound (to me at least) as crisp or clean as Flórez does here. Flórez is also such a consummate actor that the Rossini repetitions never get boring. You are hanging with Juan Diego until the last note as he commands the stage.
So young and so excellent! I have just listened to the same aria rendered by Rockwell Blake somewhen and somewhere... What a difference! That bleating timbre from a moment ago cannot be compared with this ringing, bright, sweet, beautiful voice and this absolutely brilliant coloratura I can hear now! Bravo JDF! You are the king.
Songelosodelzefiro Have you listened to Frank Lopardo and JDF's coach and manager, Ernesto Palacio? Lopardo's is slightly higher as it was performed and recorded in Vienna. Palacio's is just perfectly sung, albeit the crappy cadenza.
Did you just compare Rocky and JDF and attributed brilliant coloratura to Juan Diego Florez? They're both brilliant, no doubt there, but Rocky IS coloratura
Hahaha.... Florez actually has a faster vibrato than Blake... Florez often thins out, never seen that happen to Blake. Also the fact that you chose Florez's labored and clumsy coloratura here over Blake's in tempo, clean and effortless coloratura goes to show what you know. Also, Florez constantly runs out of breath during this aria as well as sounding shaky not something you'll ever hear from Rocky.
What a voice indeed!! And I agree he can be forgiven any corners - *so* young. You mean, the horn player is distracted just by the thought of what is to come?? Ha ha! Thanks for this:)

I didn't say he was better than everyone else. I also dont believe that anyone is better than everybody else. Thats why I dont put airs like "He can sing a high F" and JDF cant.
