  • Making your vocals sounds great is KEY to producing a successful song. A Vocal Chain is the key to making your vocals sound great. Can you see where I'm going with this?
    Pop music requires great sounding vocals. This video is going to show you how to process vocals to get a loud, up front, clean sound. It's a lot less complicated than you might think.
    If you aren't sure on the idea of compression, go and check out my "WTF IS: COMPRESSION" video, and you'll be up to speed in no time

    Nice random album artwork at 0:33 . Interesting Edit Choices.

    Issue with stacking the 1176 an CL1B is the Tubetech in fixed mode is 1ms attack, 50ms release by default. You're using to compressors to attune the peaks.

      @AdamRowleygrowley  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know it was that quick! But still sounds great to my ear. Prefer the tone to the 2a!

      This is fantastic advice actually! Yeah, I love the Tube-Tech emulation by Softube, but I always go with the classic 1176 into the 2A!

    How about the noise gate being the first on your chain... gating out any noise pre processing..

    • @AdamRowleygrowley
      @AdamRowleygrowley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey pal!
      This is definitely another way of doing it. I tend to this with RX-Denoise if it's a noisy source, but with the Noise Gate, it has a tendency to remove breaths and intonation if set wrong that I sometimes really like. Putting the noise gate at the end means the breaths are now loud enough to have them stick around after the gate!

    How did u record these vocals? Did you track with plugs in I see you got the dynamic controlled in the wave forms

    • @AdamRowleygrowley
      @AdamRowleygrowley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I record thru an apollo twin and I believe I used a AKG 414 on this track. Back then I will have recorded with light compression on the way in unfortunately.

      @@AdamRowleygrowley Do you record with UAD Rec on, or do you use UAD mon? I heard it's smart to use "UAD rec" for a home studio because real studio mic's are already being ran through actual analog hardware.

    • @AdamRowleygrowley
      @AdamRowleygrowley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thomasaudio8585 Hey man. I track with UAD Rec on these days, but with no processing on the way in (Other than preamp). For a while I just used 'Mon' Monitor. This is because I'd sometimes set my compressor wrong and then the vocal is ruined in the DAW, when it's really easy to just add the compressor after the fact.

    • @areginalmedia6451
      @areginalmedia6451 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AdamRowleygrowley If you apply the processing on the dedicated Preamp channel not the insert. You can track on MON. Either way its recording the effect on the unison preamp slot. MON recs that and bypasses the insert effects. REC does everything if I'm correct.

    okay, so your basically saying eq'ing and compressing multiple times on vocals wont hurt it... traditionally I eq/compress/de-esser/reverb/etc once per vocal, I was always afraid of doing too much and destroying the track... (* oh and im looking for the video you mentioned at the end on vocal bussing, can I get the link for that please mate)

    • @AdamRowleygrowley
      @AdamRowleygrowley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually never made the bussing video!!! I Really should. I'm much better now-a-days!
      The EQ/Compression/Deess practice isnt a problem, but make sure you're not doing much each time. Each one is doing a little bit, rather than one compressor doing all the heavy lifting.

  • @antoniusmachtmusik
    @antoniusmachtmusik ปีที่แล้ว

    so you are using the uad recording function in console and record your vocals with those 2 compressors already on the vocals into the daw?

    I like to recording thru these Comps, but I also like to have Auto-Tune on while Im performing. Now when I set "UAD rechnen" it will record the Auto-Tune with, what I absolutely don't want to. Ay chance to handle this a different way?

      Put autotune directly in protools not on the uad pre vocal chain

    • @youngwhitefresh9220

      If I do, I need to monitoring on Pro Tools also. This end up badly on my headphones

    • @AdamRowleygrowley
      @AdamRowleygrowley  ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd have to use a bus I think. Send the vocal to a bus with autotune on it, monitor the bus and mute the input channel. Haven't tried this in Console but sure it can be done without too much fuss.

    Uhm..you know that with 1176, the higher the attack/release the faster it is, right? So 7/6 is actually the fastest.

    • @AdamRowleygrowley
      @AdamRowleygrowley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did know this Filip!! Did I misspeak in this video??? Really sorry if I did. I did LOADS of research into compressors for my video on the topic, but still get this wrong every time I explain it. I've used the 1176 for so long now I just use it habitually without thinking about the physical association of the knobs.
      Sorry if I made a mistake here though!

      Ah sorry to hear you didn't like this one Mynelka!
      I tend to work in the Pop music world, and my tracks have been used by indie artists and signed artists alike. Vocals I've produced have garnered millions of plays and I'm pretty proud of where I've got my sound to now. That said, obviously it's not for everyone. If you let me know what kind of style you'd be looking to replicate, I'll try and make a video showing you how to get that style of vocal.
      If not a video, I'll write in a comment for you how I'd go about it!
