Ok you want to learn German and dive deeper into the Culture then read. Everything understood??? Ok then you are on the best way congrats for that.
Hallo James.
People often times confuse directness with being impolite or straight up destructive. Being direct, giving your opinion, and doing so in a respectful and constructive way helps out everyone. No one wants to offend anyone and no want wants to offended. That's just how things go. But as you said - if you hide behind fake politeness, thing will stay the same. Which can be to someone's detriment if said things are not good or at least not as good as they could be.
true. Theres definitely people here tho who will abuse the fact that people don't have their guard up and assume the criticism is constructive or justified, so don't just always assume good intent either
You truly learned about parts of the german soul! that is what we like to see when someone visits us to be open and not just coming and stay with stereotypes about us but actually learning about us thank you for sharing your experiences with fellow americans
I'm going to the Hamburg area on the 29th for a few months . It's my first time going to Europe. I'm so thankful to finally be able to visit Germany. I'll be in a meditation retreat in a little town called Schneverdingen. I'm trying to get myself ready for the cold. I'm from Southern California, so I am not used to winter temps...lol. Thank you for your videos. I've learned a lot .
@mistersimple1986 for sure I've got thermals, fleece, and down layers then waterproof jacket . I got some winter boots. This will be a learning experience. Thank you for your suggestion!
Hallo James😊 - sorry, but there is nothing to complain about in this video. Charming. And the Kirsche on top: your own real James-voice and your laughter❤ I wish you a merry Christmas ⭐️
Hey James I follow your content since multiple years now. And I come back from time to time to see how you are doing. I'm from Switzerland and the mentality is the same as in Germany when it comes to spending money. We will safe our money to later invest it in buying a house to get a passive income when we rent it for others and invest the money also in stocks for example. Or something else with high value (something that will have some long purpose). I would like to see how your German improved. Wish you a nice Christmas, James!
When it comes to research, the most important thing (imho) is not to question something out of spite but in order to honestly wanting to understand why things are the way they are. Unfortunately, way too many people nowadays believe that critical thinking is just calling everything fake news and creating their own little bubble in their minds, while the actual meaning is simply to ask "Why? Why does it work that way?" Also: carbonated water ftw! ^^
Nice to hear that the German habit of informing ourselves before we open our mouths is so positively received. Also our directness. For us, this is not an attack, but we see it as an opportunity to broaden our intellectual horizons. To see things that have become ingrained in us from a different perspective. Priceless for personal development. Yes, we are world champions in criticizing, but we are also world champions in accepting criticism and learning from it. It makes life sooo much easier
Dude: im kind of speachless and very impressed to see your journey up to this absolutely perfect summed up video!!! Keep up! (German living in Portugal;))
James, I really like you and your channel, your conclusions whether beeing good or "critically". It's like looking into a mirror that tells you a story from a different perspective and that's good. It's like, reading the newspapers from abroad and not just the local ones - which I highly recommend to all Germans. Thank you James, for you input.
More power to you Brother! It realy seems that your conciousness is exploding because you've opend up to what lifes diversity has to offer on this beautiful planet. Including the fact that we can and should learn from (and grow on) each other. Instead of oppressing and fighting our own human family somewhere.. somehow. Blessings from Germany ;)
Some spring waters are naturally sparkling, too. Merry Christmas! 😊 Come to the Karneval, and try small towns where not all people speak English. Or insist that they speak German. A Canadian guy I know has been in Germany for more than 20 years, and that's what he does. He has a little English accent, so people who speak English tend to speak English with him, and he just refuses to answer in English back, he always answers in German. Eventually all people speak German with him.
Dude, i love how you have developed and that you still like germany. On the subject of Sprudelwasser, i would like to say that a good brown bread with clarified butter, a pinch of salt and herbs would go well with it, give it a try ;)
Very interesting video! I have just a tiny remark about being blunt, so it does not sound rude (bluntness 2.0 😁): try talking in the I-form. With your example about the mix-tape it would make a diffence for the creator (!) of the tape if you would say " I do not like the music" instead of "the music doesn't sound good". But, that is just my humble opinion 😇 I like it very much how you reflect on so many things, and your German sounds really good! Merry Christmas, James, and see you in the next video 🥰

OMG, I can`t believe, how deeply this recent trip "germanized" you. But I like it! Sure, giving somebody your blunt opinion may not even please them, and you probably may be wrong according to the common taste, but if you don`t like something, I think it`s fair to say it. Yes, it might not be the ideal way in a worldwide perspective, but it clarifies your position, and that frees a friendship. I look forward to you having many more trips to Germany, and maybe we will meet each other in my countryside area, having enough time that you can relax and enjoy our kind of hospitality in the southwest of Germany (did I hear "Weinfest"). Have a great Christmas time and always stay safe.
Hi James! Us older Germans sometimes call Sprudel "Rülpswasser" - because: What's more refreshing in the hot summer weather, than a huge sip of water and an equally huge burp after?🤣
im not a fan of Sprudelwasser myself but if you found something thats not Coke or something its always nice to see you likeing it! I love how inspiring you talk about those 'german' habits. The point about not beeing offended is to me very important and is something everyone should keep in mind! We can only improve ourselves if we know what we messed up. With you all the best with your 'new' view and keep going mate!
On the question of whether directness is rude: In Germany, we say “der Ton macht die Musik” ("tone makes all the difference"). Directness itself isn't inherently impolite, it often depends on HOW something is said.

Hello James, I think it's great how much you like Germany and your videos are really great. Maybe it's worth considering speaking German with other streamers or people from the chat in Discord about everyday things to improve your German.
You know that moment when you realize you're part of a social system that's not so great? That's when you start to see how amazing and kind the world is.
What I learned: If someone in America asks me, my counter question would be "can you take German directness?". Depending on their answer I'll go the 1. "It is Ohkhay" route, the 2. "lets try something different" "A little less salt" "a bit too sweet" (which already some feel offensive), or 3. the actual German directness. If they feel offended I explain: "We Germans see beating around the bush or an overly long non-offensive answer as an insult, 'cause we see it as waste of time." Oh, BTW: I see how much you personally improved over your previous videos way over a year ago - impressive! Which is typical American too: Being able to adapt.
I was banned on a channel because I advised the person to iron the collars of his shirts, which a creased collar does not look good. My German head will never understand 🤷🏻♀️😅
Hi James, really like your work and have seen several of your videos about germany and really like it. I hope you only forgot to mention the 'Lüften' process and took it with you too :-) btw. about blunt feedback, it really is meant as constructive criticism. One example is, i dont know if it only me, but the camera angle you are using quite often is letting it appear as if you are talking down on me. position yourself in a higher position. Personally i always prefer to talk to equal level :-) to be partners in conversation. last but not least, merry christmas 🙂
Haven't ever thought about it but it's true, many more people here talk about how much they saved for a quality item than how expensive one was. Never heard "check out my 60k Mercedes" but I've heard a lot "I know a guy who works at Mercedes so I got this car for 40% off".
The German directness of course also means that a positive comment means what it says and does not contain a "what you have made is not really good, but I don't want to offend you".
looks like you changed from James "Blunt" to James Bray ;-) It gives good vibes seeing someone self reflecting. It is more adult/more mature. 🙂 By the way, there is "billig" (cheap, not worth the money), "günstig" (it may be more worth than the money) and "preiswert" (it is worth the price) So even if you had a menu for 60€ it is "preiswert" if you enjoyed it - the joy was the price worth.
Because "Angry" Water mixed with a little bit of Lemon, Apple Juice or Orange Juice taste better than tap water schorle. Sprudelwasser also let you feel your stomage "full" faster than tab water. So in a hot summer you drink Carbonated water slower (over a longer time but only a little bit every minute) - by this way your body can use the water better to be hydrated while drinking a quarter Gallon in 5 minutes is to much for the Body to use directly aka it goes from the Stomage direct to the kidneys, additionally your Body wants to get rid of the water by oversweeting ,and you permanently wants to pee.
Sodas are as hydrating as water, coffee, soups, vegetables, fruits, everything with water is hydrating, difference is only how much additional minerals, sugar and vitamins, and of course 'toxins', you consume.
Black and German people have so much in common. E.g. we both get called the n-word.... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hearty greeting from Germany, Fars
That was flattering - maybe you haven't turned quite as German yet as you may assume. As a German, my experience oftes is the other way round: people from other cultures might feel I am rude when I feel I am just speaking my mind, or they may feel overwhelmed by my longest and most detailed comments ever, and dialogues may stop before they even start. (Twitter was great learning-how-to-edit-too for me back then). In turn, I quite often find American comments bland, boring, repetitive and predictable (but that might often just be the standard teen comments) Also, I remember back when I lived in Canada, how shocked I was to find that my beloved 'Sprudel' was only available as 'soda' bottle by bottle and quite expensive (when my housemate spotted me buying it anyway, she assumed she had found what I was addicted to).
It wouldn't german if we couldn't go more inti detail about "Sprudel Wasser". In Baden Württemberg you have TWO types! The "Saure Sprudel" (Saure sprinkling water) which is whta you know as "Sprudelwasser" and "Süßer Sprudel" (Sweet sprinkling water) Which basically is a soda or soft drink that you know under brands like Sprite oder 7up. Of course the german or euopean versions taste different, just like german coke and german fanta does taste different to the american versions.
one of my biggest pet peeves over the past couple years has been realizing that, in english, "criticizing" is understood as complaining, not as performing critique. thats why english speakers always seem to take it negatively when they are being criticized, when - properly conducted - criticism/critique should be an opportunity to grow and improve. for the "verifying information" stuff, i think a lot of it does come down to a fairly okay school system (which could still be lightyears better). unfortunately, there are still a lot of people, obviously, that are lazy and simply dont give a damn, among all age groups. they dont care about finding out the truth and/or forming their own opinions and just believe what verifies their own bias, half the time formed through being fed lies.
the total secret about why we love our "sprudel" is the big burp after ;) ...on a hot day, empty half a bottle of icecold sprudel and u'll know what i mean ^^.
Hey man, im german, and its kinda funny, that we had so much influence on u :D Not every german is straight/direct in conversations. i am and often got criticized ^^ Btw i hat sparkling water. on a hot summer day i wanna drink and stay hydrated, but if i drink sparkling water, i cant drink a lot, cause of the pain from the bubbles in my throat. imo we didnt need that stuff in germany :D and at least, poorly a lot of germans didnt overthink potential words spoken or written and dont do some research, believe in other people, doesnt matter how stupid the shit was :( thats the reason of the Rechtsruck/Nazis/AFD shit in our country, europe and USA. Populism is the keyword :( We germans say: Ich wünsche dir einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr cu James and have a good time :)
Thank you for your Video! 🙂 I am a German woman myself. I do consume a lot of “real life TV” from America, true crime videos, bodycam videos, videos like this one, etc. Still, I didn't realize that you Americans are so afraid of each other (maybe it's because of the guns?! 😁🙈) that you can't tell each other the truth into your face?! I love all people equally, really everyone as they are. But if there is a common context and I can give someone an honest different point of view on their stuff with my honest opinion, then I do it and I would be happy if someone else would do that with me. If we were more honest with each other, we would have fewer problems. That's a fact. You can't disappoint anyone if you're honest with them. It makes sense to be honest and still have empathy for each other. 🙂 I buy bottled water, but only still water. And to be honest, many people in Germany drink still water because still water is always sold out in supermarkets and sparkling water is never sold out. Germans also drink both. I don't wear expensive advertising for some outrageous company on my beautiful body, that would be honest, not honest, who I am. 🙂 On the other hand, you Americans want to punish your criminals as harshly as possible, even with the death penalty. In Germany there is no death penalty and "life imprisonment" means 15 years. We Germans are more honest with each other, but we also believe more in the “good” in everyone and give everyone the chance to improve. 🙂
I think you meant sparSamkeit, right? With an s in the middle :) Btw sparsamkeit is one of the reasons Apple only has like 20% market share in Germany, as opposed to around 60% in the USA. Oh and of course Americans are way more brand loyal than Germans on average. Great video James. I think you give yourself too much shit sometimes. Love and merry christmas.!

Don't worry James! We will make you german! .... Excellent! Monty Burns gesture
für den algo! und frohe weihnachten
Comments for the Algo God! Well, you get it´m ifyou know WarHammer!
😆
Just.... Merry x mas to you and... take care of you :-)
Haven't ever thought about it but it's true, many more people here talk about how much they saved for a quality item than how expensive one was. Never heard "check out my 60k Mercedes" but I've heard a lot "I know a guy who works at Mercedes so I got this car for 40% off".
Sprudelwasser... best sounds a drink can produce.
water is just so plain without bubbles
The German directness of course also means that a positive comment means what it says and does not contain a "what you have made is not really good, but I don't want to offend you".
Sparklingwater is good for the digestion and activates the gustatory nerves.
Some people even may get disappointed when you just dance around the prolem, when you could just point at it and adress it directly 😅
I think your second point depends on the state in which you are in Germany
I loved your „Günstig vs. billig“…You are so German by now 😂
If someone takes the time to write a huge article, the person loves and respects you,how could you show more love?!
looks like you changed from James "Blunt" to James Bray ;-)
It gives good vibes seeing someone self reflecting. It is more adult/more mature. 🙂
By the way, there is "billig" (cheap, not worth the money), "günstig" (it may be more worth than the money) and "preiswert" (it is worth the price)
So even if you had a menu for 60€ it is "preiswert" if you enjoyed it - the joy was the price worth.
Sounds awesome, but what I really wish for is a collaboration with feli from germany
Ich finde sie zu bayernlastig🤷🏼♀️
Failers are there to learn about them, and never do them again "Hinterher ist man immer Schlau" After (the Fail) your always smarter
Frohe Weihnachten🎄
Cool guy
It's important to drink the right sprudel without fluoride
Nice bro 🎉🎉🎉🎉
merry christmas bro
team leitungswasser 💪🏻
why would you want to drink angry water that hurts your throat?
As a German,I appreciate CONSTRUCTIVE critisism... Dont Just say pfui, say why that is so
Black and German people have so much in common. E.g. we both get called the n-word....
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hearty greeting from Germany, Fars
It is important that there are constructive critics
Frohe Weihnachten Du Pflaume :)
Put a slice of lemon into your Sprudelwasser ;)
That was flattering - maybe you haven't turned quite as German yet as you may assume.
As a German, my experience oftes is the other way round: people from other cultures might feel I am rude when I feel I am just speaking my mind, or they may feel overwhelmed by my longest and most detailed comments ever, and dialogues may stop before they even start. (Twitter was great learning-how-to-edit-too for me back then). In turn, I quite often find American comments bland, boring, repetitive and predictable (but that might often just be the standard teen comments)
Also, I remember back when I lived in Canada, how shocked I was to find that my beloved 'Sprudel' was only available as 'soda' bottle by bottle and quite expensive (when my housemate spotted me buying it anyway, she assumed she had found what I was addicted to).
recently Sprudelwasser tasted to gasy for me so I mostly drink still or medium now
It wouldn't german if we couldn't go more inti detail about "Sprudel Wasser".
In Baden Württemberg you have TWO types! The "Saure Sprudel" (Saure sprinkling water) which is whta you know as "Sprudelwasser" and "Süßer Sprudel" (Sweet sprinkling water)
Which basically is a soda or soft drink that you know under brands like Sprite oder 7up. Of course the german or euopean versions taste different, just like german coke and german fanta does taste different to the american versions.
In Germany we say „Frohe Weihnachten“
And by the way,... WHICH Sprurdelwasser? With a litte, medium or nornal carbon dioxide? And we are not even talking about the gazillion brands! 😄
one of my biggest pet peeves over the past couple years has been realizing that, in english, "criticizing" is understood as complaining, not as performing critique.
thats why english speakers always seem to take it negatively when they are being criticized, when - properly conducted - criticism/critique should be an opportunity to grow and improve.
for the "verifying information" stuff, i think a lot of it does come down to a fairly okay school system (which could still be lightyears better). unfortunately, there are still a lot of people, obviously, that are lazy and simply dont give a damn, among all age groups. they dont care about finding out the truth and/or forming their own opinions and just believe what verifies their own bias, half the time formed through being fed lies.
You need to try a Brezel with Butter if you haven't before!
Nächstes Jahr bist Du beim Weltspartag dabei! 😄
the total secret about why we love our "sprudel" is the big burp after ;) ...on a hot day, empty half a bottle of icecold sprudel and u'll know what i mean ^^.
Burps come best on Pepsi. (proved😉) 😂

Hey man, im german, and its kinda funny, that we had so much influence on u :D
Not every german is straight/direct in conversations. i am and often got criticized ^^
Btw i hat sparkling water. on a hot summer day i wanna drink and stay hydrated, but if i drink sparkling water, i cant drink a lot, cause of the pain from the bubbles in my throat. imo we didnt need that stuff in germany :D
and at least, poorly a lot of germans didnt overthink potential words spoken or written and dont do some research, believe in other people, doesnt matter how stupid the shit was :(
thats the reason of the Rechtsruck/Nazis/AFD shit in our country, europe and USA. Populism is the keyword :(
We germans say: Ich wünsche dir einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr
cu James and have a good time :)
Thank you for your Video! 🙂
I am a German woman myself.
I buy bottled water, but only still water. And to be honest, many people in Germany drink still water because still water is always sold out in supermarkets and sparkling water is never sold out. Germans also drink both.
I don't wear expensive advertising for some outrageous company on my beautiful body, that would be honest, not honest, who I am. 🙂
On the other hand, you Americans want to punish your criminals as harshly as possible, even with the death penalty. In Germany there is no death penalty and "life imprisonment" means 15 years. We Germans are more honest with each other, but we also believe more in the “good” in everyone and give everyone the chance to improve. 🙂
Just call it Sprudel. the wasser part is not necessary :)
US Americans have forgotten (self) criticism, why? "We are the greatest ..."
I think you meant sparSamkeit, right? With an s in the middle :)
Btw sparsamkeit is one of the reasons Apple only has like 20% market share in Germany, as opposed to around 60% in the USA. Oh and of course Americans are way more brand loyal than Germans on average.
Great video James. I think you give yourself too much shit sometimes. Love and merry christmas.!
