      Hi Griff,
Since you said that all corrections should be posted underneath the above comment, I thought this would be the appropriate place to point out that there were two separate revolutions in 1917. Your use of language implied a singular revolution. I imagine this was a mere oversight on your part, but one that should be corrected.

The connection with the Byzantine empire comes from Ivan III, who married the daughter of the last Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI. The double-headed eagle was brought to Moscow when Constantinople fell (at least according to tradition), where it became the symbol of the Russian empire and later of the Romanovs. Also, Russia kept the flame burning for Orthodox Christianity in that part of the world during the period of Mongol domination. That's why some consider Moscow the third Rome.

Excellent video, you two! But in my view you dodged a bullet by starting the history of Russia with the Moscovite kingdom and not from the ancient kingdom of Rus... In my view, the period between the fall of Rus' and the rise of Moscow was the most interesting (and controversial) period because I never quite understood how three separate peoples (Russians, Ukrainians and white Russian) came to occupy the lands that used to be Rus and how all three of them claim to be culturally descended from Rus.

Your map in 1:15 is wrong. Finland, Karelia or the Kola peninsula and the russian coast around the white sea where never controlled by the mongols. The republic of Novgorod wasn't controlled by the Mongols until the 1270s and even then, their control over Novgorod lasted until the 1290s so about 20 years.

The Russian Empire was in terminal decline by the beginning of the 19th century? I think you're jumping the gun a bit there. They marched all the way to Paris as part of the coalition defeating Napoleon, aside from the Crimean War stomped the Turks repeatedly, expanded deeper into Central Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia, and humiliated the Chinese at every opportunity. Sure, this was beginning to crack by the end of the 19th century and of course after the disaster of the Russo-Japanese War, but for the most part, Russia had a fairly successful 19th century.

The Russian empire's 2 main problems where the need for industrialization and the fear they caused after the Napoleonic wars, After france was contained, Russia became the next target on the curb list, After not even Napoleon himself could stop Russia, Europe realized that sooner or later the enormous Russian empire utalizing it's wast resources and inexhaustable manpower will overrun all of Europe, this has led to the political isolation of Russia and the Crimean war where almost all of the other great powers ganged up on Russia, while Austria a supposed ally abandoned the tzar in the time of need.
The Russians during the 19th centure were forced by the other greatpowers to make concession after concession, They were made stop at Iran and Afganistan by British pressure, they were forced to sell Alaska again by British naval supremacy, They estabilished a Large Bulgarian Ally in the Balkans during one of the wars against Turkey, but Germany forced them to make concessions wich lead to the Balkan wars and Bulgaria abandoning Russia as an allyl, They were cicked right in the loin at Crimea because France and Britain did not want Russia to finish off the Ottomans.
The Russian empire had it's economy develop at a rapid pace during this time, and during the 1st world war, they almost completely Broke trough Austrian defenses and forced the Germans to stop their all out attack against France.
The Soviets merely finished what the Empire had already started, and part of the Reason Hittler decided to invade the USSR in 1941, was because that theoretical point of no return in terms of Russian domination over europe was rapidly aproaching, and indeed Russia did overrun basicly the entire army and economy of continental Europe. (the combined might of Germany, her allies, her puppets, and occupied collaboration goverments were not enough)
If the Western allies did not land in normandy in 1944 all of mainland europe would have fallen to the Soviets.

Just gonna casually miss out Polish Intervention in the period of change of dynasties from Rurik to Romanov and and forget about Swedes taking a bite out of Novgorodian territories (which is what Peter The Great aimed to reclaim in the Northern War)....
    But otherwise, great video!

    • @TheBlobik
      @TheBlobik 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Possibly, if the Polish king wasn't too stubborn and greedy, he might have introduced a completely different dynasty than Romanovs on the throne, as the Russian elites seemed to be OK with the son of Sigismund III Wasa, if he converted to orthodox Christianity. But for deeply catholic Wasa who wanted the power for himself it was too much.
Were he more open minded, he might have raised his children in various 'branches' of Christianity and have Wasa dynasty reign over Russia, PLC and Sweden. Possibly even unifying those under single monarch some time later, and creating a huge superpower. Sweden, PLC and Russia were all countries of great potential at the time.

European countries did not know what was happening in central and north Euroasia till 19 century. They even marked half of Euroasia on the maps as "Grand Tartaria". There were very little peoples in the east so it was like colonizing they continued to hire cossacks to move east. And they had very little resistance due to most natives being...arrow fighting natives against muskets. Look up the russian conquest of siberia on wiki for more.

@@legendarylimits564 Still, Siberian khanates were civliised people with armies, walled cities and gunpowder arty. Compare it to bronge age level techs of native americans. The main reason why Russia annexed Siberia so quickly is because they all were parts of ex Mongol empire, they knew each other's culture and language. Ivan the terrible among other titles had title of "White Tsar". That was a title of emperor of the Golden horde. So nothing strange that many parts of ex empire joined Russia.

This is an excellent video in nearly every respect, but I have but three (mostly minor) detractions. Firstly, In the Crimean War there were substantially more French and Turkish troops engaged than British troops. Secondly (minor detail) the Swedish Army maintained the use of Pikes, typically in a 2/3 shot to 1/3 pike ratio, and both made substantial use of Heavy Cavalry. Thirdly (minor as it's a ten minute video) a general lack of detail regarding later reforms and industrialization, such as the gradualist approach to abolishing serfdom, and the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway (among engineering feats)
    Sincerely, Ben Skorupka

Thanks! Good criticisms. To be entirely honest, the mistakethe Crimean War was because we just didn't have the artwork for Turkish and French soldiers, our artist is on vacation!
The Swedish Army composition was a mistake that I didn't realize until you pointed it out (even though we did a video on pikes and line formations haha.)
We do mention the abolition of serfdom, but we didn't fit in details like the Trans-Siberian Railway. That was less of a mistake, and more of us just running out of time; the video was initially intended to be just six minutes long.

      A better answer is:
Russia took many of the Mongol systems for governing and conquering large territories
Russian rulers were familiar with the ways of Turkic and Mongol Khanates in Siberia from past experiences they knew exactly how to force them to submit
Russian Tzars had blood ties with khans, and held the title for "khan" or tzar of Siberia giving them legitemacy
Thus many of the mongolian/Turkic khanates did not view Russia as a completely foreign conqeror but an incarnation of the old Mongolian Empire under new leadership (of course this was BEFORE the westernizing reforms of Peter)
In addition Russians imposed a tax system on their peasants wich favored peasents living out in the borderlands, thus massive waves of Russian peasents searching for a better life leaved the Heartland to the various border regions of Russia, populating re populating and assimilating most of Siberia

You wouldn't like to read about ww1 German history from British source because of propaganda but Europeans who always hated Russia either because of crusades against orthodox Russia , hating them during great game or because of communism and cold war . Even ww2 history of west is literally approved and dictated by German generals who took refuge in commonwealth and USA . Take western history about Russia with a large pinch of salt.
