FF9 always felt like Square took a step back, looked at where they were with the franchise and thought "Let's take all we've learned from our previous titles for this one". Let's have a world that enchants players, that is actual fantasy and with interesting, varied characters of all comings and races, that feels like a fairy tale but is also dark. Let's have a battle system that feels like the old but plays like the new and customisation that mirrors the best aspect of our Job system, Materia and even Magicite and merge it together. Let's make it a milestone on our way forward... and it is why it feels so much like FF4, FF6 and FF7 merged together, cutting off the excess and keeping the best of it. And it is why I personally like it so much : it truly feels like a proper Final Fantasy game, not only for the mechanics it uses, the music and such... but also because the world itself feels just right. If I had a personal list of favorite FF games, it would easily be in the top 5.

Also the storyline flows like a movie and makes it really hard to put the controller down because you feel for the characters and want to continue with them in their own personal journeys as well as the greater storyline. No character in the game finishes the same they started at the beginning. It’s by far my favorite and I would argue still that it’s the best the franchise has offered ever(it’s tough saying that because I love 6 so much).

True, with everything getting more high definition with the graphics. It would be hard to make IX less high definition with cartoonish designs. Then again, KH2.8 and 3 kind of pulled it off nicely.
I'd argue that Zidane x Garnet is the most organically progressed/developed relationship in the FF Universe. Tidus x Yuna would be a close second though.

Cursedwind Everyone I have ever introduced FF6 to, it has become their favorite. It's only aged because you played it a long time ago or too much. FF9, a lot of people never even finish it despite how short it is. Now, when you play both from start to finish, FF9 is the better game simply because of the console it's on and the direction it took. Plenty of fun little animations and expressions from the characters throughout make it feel really really alive and organic, something no FF before it could quite do. I believe that if FF6 were remade with even those limited PS1 graphics, but with the cinematic quality and appropriate character animations like 9 has, it would easily be the best game in the series. Think about how much less entertaining Zidane would be without all of those moments where he's bouncing around, hanging from his tail, throwing up his dukes, or brushing old Rusty off of his shoulders. Now, imagine that same sort of comedy with Edgar happening in the background at any given town's cafe with some waitress or local girls. Dammit, this just turned into a rant for wanting a remake for FF's that actually deserve one.

Even after FINALLY playing through VI (VII was my introduction to the series) and loving the shit out of it, IX is still my favorite Final Fantasy. Followed closely by VI and VII. Can't wait for VII remake and I hope VI get's some love at some point.

Well, it's FF12.), best artstyle (I can't be the only one who likes more the SNES-era Square artstyle than the one that comes later, I think.), and best villain, even if Sephiroth and Kuja are really kewl too.)FF5 being third. (I looooove the job system of this game, the characters are nice (Never beaten Gilgamesh, so, can't tell about him, even if so many people love him., the soundtrack is... Eh, FF4, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 12 all have a better soundtrack, but it's not bad, the artstyle is nice, and the story... Is basically the one of FF1 or 3, but with better characters, so it works a bit better.)
The only thing that pissed me off about the battle system is You had to use your trance. Sometimes I wanted to save it for a boss battle...not a weak opponent.

Gustiyan Mahardika early lvling up was the most stupid you can do, and I did the same mistake in my first playtimes. You gain stats on level up depending on the things you wear. So to become the strongest possible on all members at lvl 99 you had to beat the game on lvl 1 to get the best equipment to wear before leveling up, finally. You could control the output of your stats by choosing carefully what to wear.
modi X Oh, right, there is such a thing as that. Anyway, it's a matter of preference. If you wait until you get the best equipment before leveling up, suit yourself. But that is a lot of hard shit and game rage if you don't have proper equipments to nullify or absorb damage. I wasn't saying to fight grand dragons until lvl 99, but just enough lvl up to learn some good abilities (especially from coral ring). Then save some lvl for those pesky yans.
***** lol, there're so much level x death in FF that I forgot which one's which. Why don't you play it again? I recently started playing FFIX again on my android after a long time but so far I've only reached Vivi's sneak in to Alexandria castle on CD1.
***** There is no PC version of FFIX, so there will be no steam version. Get epsxe and play it there. ;) Or get a PS1, but seriously, you can gain better graphics with epsxe, just get the time to setup everything perfect for FFIX.
