Wil, merci! Mahalo! On my self-taught journey I've cobbled together a fundamental grasp of music theory as it applies to the guitar. Over the past four years, I've sponged up this knowledge from Zombie Guitar, Chris Sherland, and Guthrie Trapp, primarily, plus several others. Lately, I've been working on Charlie Long's triad and pentatonic exercises and Jack Ruch's dominant 7ths and blues licks tutorials. I understand how the cage system works and what intervals are, and my technique and capacity to apply these principles to the instrument have been advancing, albeit incrementally. Then I stumbled into your deep dive explanation of intervals. What stunning clarity! Somehow you seem to have touched on all the murky unanswered questions struggling to take shape in my mind. These are questions, that, of course, need to be answered for me to pick up the pace. The same can be said of the next one of your videos that I watched, your deep dive into the caged system. And now I'm about to rewatch this one on pentatonics. You do a terrific job of explaining the context in a linear way that answers many of the 'why' questions I have. Thank you, especially, for your tip about correlating the pentatonic patterns to the caged chord shapes, starting at the root (which can be on the D string, in the case of two of the shapes) instead of always struggling to reference sequential "boxes" that all start on the low E string. This is pure gold! Adopting this won't take long -- and I can see how mastering this alone will lead me to a higher tier. You've given me hope that, before all is said and done, I might even come to understand how to proactively apply modes -- something I had to this point, assumed, was unattainable. Thank you for your commitment to share your knowledge in such a thorough way -- for the greater good. It's admirable -- and greatly appreciated!
Thank you, I have watched most of your videos now and they have helped me out of a 15 year rut of all the classic problems you explain for an intermediate guitarist. If I have some extra money around I will buy your books. Thank you for doing the longer videos I appreciate you man!
I am a professional Pianist. Music teacher working on learning electrica guitar. Man... this is the first time I hear that amazing music language, speech, right therorical explanation, accurate and academic. Well done!!! Congratulations
You by far are the best teacher I’ve ever seen for music. I’ve been stuck on the plain for about 5 years now. Please don’t shorten these lessons up. Everyone does 15 to 30 minute videos but the way you explain not only the theory but how to use it just works so well. It’s helping me fill in the huge holes I’ve had and I’ve been playing for 15 years so I can only imagine what this does for beginners.
Nothing is boring at all William. I am eating up every bit of it. After being a vocalist all my life, I’ve been playing guitar for five years and I want to know everything because I’m going to be 70 years old. I don’t have all the Time in the world I am on a mission, I don’t want to be a good guitar player. I want to be a great guitar player and you are certainly helping.
I have finally made it through the whole lesson. What a treat! You are so generous with your talent and teaching. I’m a Singer, who has been playing now for five years since retirement. I’m going to be 70 in February. I already knew all of the boxes which I learned as boxes of the major and minor pentatonic. I can play them backwards and forwards, and be kind of melodic with them. After this lesson I feel more in tune with the entire fretboard. I have progressed to the point where soloing with a major and minor pentatonic is not challenging for me anymore. I want to learn the whole fretboard and how to connect everything, and how to play better technically thanks again Guillaume. I will be awaiting further lessons when you put them up on you tube. Peace and Love Todd B.
thank you so much Will you are a gifted teacher. I am an enthusiastic 76 yr old learner. i am learning so much, thank you for your generosity, God bless you, Billy Gebbie
This is the best guitar lesson I've ever seen, clear, right to the point without taking off important concepts, no tips/tricks bullshit just "do what you need to do to learn it" and say what we need, perfect!!! I'm not a native english speaker and even not a fluent one (portuguese) and I can hear, understand and write every word you said, this is so good too
I agree with you rodo, there are too many one hit wonders out there with clickbait titles like "learn this in ten minutes and you'll be a guitar hero". No such thing - no way around putting in the work (but you can enjoy the process).
Dude! I was looking at a zillion tutorials lately, having a hard time putting the pieces together. Your video is by far the best summary on the subject. Thanks so much for that really! You totally won me at minute 46:33 ("sorry, if you wanna be serious about playing guitar, you've gotta learn to do these things"). That's the message that I was missing in so many videos. Great authentic style of teaching! Good luck with your channel.
For me this has been the best explanation to connecting the pentatonic boxes to the chord shapes.Suddenly it's all become a bit clearer in my old man's head. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. 😊
Can't thank you enough from just having viewed this vid!!! Amazing, I feel like I've learned sooo much, I'm just starting to play again after a few years away from my guitar and I just know this video and your teaching methods are going to help me improve in the best ways possible. Massive praise and thanks from a previously failed 51 year old UK guitarist - I just know the sky's the limit now, cheers Will. You got a new sub.
wow I'm only half way through this video but already it's obvious this is an amazing lesson. Not easy to find a lesson that really helps has no big blanks in the material, is understandable, and teaches so much.
You are an excellent teacher. I've been playing for a long time, but am always trying to improve. I don't think I've ever seen a better presentation of the pentatonic scale.
I'd say, now, with the internet, not many guitarists are just doing boxes. Too much information out there. And maybe a lot are playing by ear if they don't know the shapes. This is gold and I downloaded it and subbed. Thanks.
This is really good coming up to intermediate level. The fret number would helpful at times, on the Box links etc.All the information in one place like this is very helpful, if you’re learning on your own without lessons
Great video, the missing links for those who know the theory behind it but never practice it properly to get it into their muscle memory. Merci Guillaume. Keep posting.
I would just like to say if any body is looking for information on theory or guitar in general, Will is your go to guy. He has been more than generous with his knowledge of guitar. This guy just loves music and is willing to share. Please give him your support. And no this isn't a paid advertisement. Lol. He has just been great to me and I believe he truly cares about helping others.
This one video cleared up so many questions, especially questions related to modes. I have been struggling with modes for so long and it’s primarily because of people teaching about modes that don’t really have a firm grasp what they’re all about. This is the absolute best explanation of their application I have ever come across. I can’t thank you enough.
Average beginner; learn as much as you need to start playing as fast as possible, to sound as good as possible, move on to copy something flashy that sounds good as fast as possible, then repeat. Then in a few years we sound pretty good and never go back to these basics. This is eye-opening to look back at what I should have learned first, so many years ago. I needed this! Badly. I shared it with a friend who is presently in the studio recording the groups 2nd album. He said the same thing.
This is SO GOOD! such a good instructor. Many can play, but it doesn’t always translate into good teaching. Great methods and in the proper order like this aren’t the norm on TH-cam. Much appreciated
Wow, have never seen anyone explain the *reason* for using the pentatonic scale with such clarity. And… beautiful Tele. What is the exact model for that thing? 😀
Amazing! The importance of knowing exactly where you are in the fretboard its essential for playing gigs, where you may be surprised with a unknown song, or a take in a solo, i'd only add that learning where your intervals are will help a great way, finding the Major 3° on the fly, the Perfect 5th, making the relation between the interval position with the chords on fly does a lot into delivering your best performance!
Out of a lot of good online guitar tutors you are THE best! but I have to besmirch... 'tuned' (as in 'the way the guitar is tuned') is pronounced 'chooned' not 'tooned' and the same is true of the big tasty fish - CHOONAH, not TOONAH... just having a giggle with you Will. Amazing guitar teaching - thanks to you this is now the most enjoyable and fathomable part of my 30 year guitar journey!
This is super super helpful. I've been trying to figure out how to understand the fretboard for jam solos and adding notes. This ties caged and pentatonic beautifully together. I'm only at 25 minintues in, but already have a good way to practice that. Merci!
Jeez i really need to go back to the beginning of Caged and Pentatonics and stop noodling tho im tryna have a lot of phrases but it all starts in this lesson. Like many i started with modes when i should be working on notes individually 1-3-5, 1- flat 3 -5 etc.Ugh its a lot but i will do it after 35yrs ive only recently started learning real theory that matters like this.Thank you man, very humbling but really need to stop tryna get faster as shredders seem amazing which i have a speed limit but at least i understand thats not music and many have no feel to their playing
Hi, Will. Thanks for the videos. Are you currently working on your third music theory book specifically written for guitarists, and do you know about when it will be released?
I am really new to guitar like only a couple of moments. I found a good tip for remembering major and minor scales for me. Basically if it’s major scale your pinky goes on the root note if it is a minor your index finger goes on the root note. Hopefully I was given correct information but that is it.
No really unfortunately. Any advice on how to play major and minor scale that involve anatomy is usually incorrect. I see where the advice is coming from, but hopefully my videos shine light on why it’s not entirely correct. You can start major scales with any finger
Much more than just another good-looking face. Bro! You got this wrapped up! Wow, you really know your stuff. And, you are already helping me to learn too. I like your approach. You are actually helping me to grasp the principles and theory (oops sorry for swearing) I've never been able to relate the theory you have helped me to relate over this hour or so. Amazing. I get it now. I am finally seeing the "chord" in the "scale". And I am finally grasping the root, third and fifth and starting to locate them better than I ever have. Just amazing. Very good. I hit the subscribe and looking forward to more content. Thank you.
Great lesson Will! It was right on time because I’m really trying to be a better player that understands the whole fretboard, and how to solo with chord tones and arpeggios. I am really working hard on this lesson and I think I have a grasp of it, because I already knew all five positions of the major and minor pentatonic. This lesson is making those positions seem so much clearer and how to use them I have subscribed and hit the bell and all that stuff so thank you very much for your expertise and time………Todd
So how do you modulate between major and pralle and relative minor? Also, if all you know is how do basic picking, some right hand technique would be super!
I guess I don’t understand the question! To modulate, you just switch the scale as described in the video. Or are you asking when or in which context you would do so?
@@willmetz_music Thanks for replying! It's one thing to know the relationships, quite another to know how and when to use them in musically exciting ways.
Hi Will could you help please? I’m trying to keep up with you working out the shapes in this tutorial which I’ve enjoyed so far but now I’m completely lost! Thank you Susie
I don't feel comfortable in anything I do. Except for when I'm in that luck zone. Everything I play, I notice I could have done better or put something in that I neglected. That includes compensating for bad handling of the pick, which I'm not good at. You got me right off the top without even having to elaborate. I didn't have a clue what the foundations were/are, other than what I do out of habit. Thanks alot for doing this.
@@willmetz_music Sure thing. By the way, that's a cool Fender you have there with the lip sick by the neck. No stupid paint jobs or modifications. I know that none of this should matter to me since I'm left handed. It's just that I really like your particular Telecaster.
@@ralfybaby Don't whine at me, right hander. I've had to go in and out of music stores all my life around stringed instruments hanging in front of my face, that are made specifically for you people. Us left handers have always had to settle for spare parts rejects.
I really appreciate the clean, clear guitar tone for the demos. It's painful when guys shout at you like overexcited children, then blast overloud, totally distorted speedy licks you can't follow and wouldn't want to reproduce anyway. You can tell these guys are hiding the real info wanting you to sign up for a paid course online. This guy is into the music and teaching.
This is excellent.. Excellent Excellent Does this happen to you guys, you stumble upon great content once you learned the concept the hard way, via trial and error ? And then the video pops up XD
Unfortunately that requires a quite deep understanding of theory. Something that cannot be explained in one video. You’re welcome to reach out and join us in the academy though!
I totally agree with @don_dieselkopf, your tutorials are STELLAR! thank you for taking the time to explain in detail how the pentatonic connects to chords and the caged as well.
Great video Will. From personal experience, I know what you are saying. Knowing the 5 shapes of the minor pent (one after the other up the neck) and then learning the major shapes only as they are related to the minor shapes is like saying you know the English language because you know the alphabet from A to G. If you stop there because you don't have the perseverance to take it further, you are done - end of progress. That is why I am here - it only took a couple of minutes listening to what you had to say to know that you understand this common problem among us wannabe twang bangers. OK enough, I'm off to listen to the rest of your presentation hoping I can muster up the discipline to work at what you are saying. I'm tired of wading in the shallow water, I want to swim in the deep end. Thanks for making this effort for us.
Brilliant info although it's slightly confronting to find its true, I am the guy stumbling around in a few box shapes. But this makes perfect sense. :) I have a lot of work to do but don't have unlimited free time to do it.
WILL METZ, make a YT lesson when mixing shapes and cross shapes in each Box#1 thru Box#5. This is what Jerry Garcia would play using CAGED but also chord inversions. The CAGED system is just root position on the low E string or A string is the root note. Jerry Garcia would use 1st inversion CAGED and 2nd inversion CAGED system plus adding the pentatonic CAGED shapes to the pentatonic scales. You should make a 1st inversion CAGED which is when the bottom low E or low A is the 3rd scale degree and 2nd inversion CAGED is when the bottom low E note or low A note is the 5th scale degree to make YT lessons about.
You are so darn cute ! Not hitting on you just stating a fact. Besides, you're too young for me anyway. I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. Trying to teach myself guitar ( and French ) at age 59. When I get really good I'll move to the French alps and play there ! A bien tot et merci! If I had lots of money I'd send you some....but I am not killing it driving a school bus. I am happy though. Thank you for teaching me something new every day. Never too old to learn something new
Hi Will, I entered my email address, but I still can't get access to the documents for the ultimate pentatonic method listed in the video. Could I get your help on this please. Many thanks!
thank you for your reply. Yes, I did get a confirm my subscription, but did not get access to the documents. Am I doing something wrong?@@willmetz_music
In all my years of playing and singing, I never played lead, we usually had a "hired gun" or a great player. Now I'm old and all my guys are dead or disappeared. Recently I've met some new (old folks) and realized I'm the last guy standing but not dead yet! I'm working really hard on this pentatonic stuff .. Anyone like Freddie or Albert King or BB King? . Trouble is I'm a white guy. Stevie Ray said I'm really a black guy in a white body. R.I.P. Stevie Ray.

Take your time and pause the video as needed :).
You’re so welcome! Glad I could help
@@willmetz_music Sure thing. By the way, that's a cool Fender you have there with the lip sick by the neck. No stupid paint jobs or modifications. I know that none of this should matter to me since I'm left handed. It's just that I really like your particular Telecaster.
@@stratoleftseconded !
I need a Tele 😂
@@ralfybaby Don't whine at me, right hander. I've had to go in and out of music stores all my life around stringed instruments hanging in front of my face, that are made specifically for you people. Us left handers have always had to settle for spare parts rejects.
@@stratoleft WTF?
I agreed with you about liking his telecaster.
I’m learning a lot.
Subscribed!! Thanks for sharing!! Awesome video!!
Thank you!! So happy this video found you.
Well explained and just an awesome lesson on the topic. Subscribed and will be watching more of your content, thank you!
You’re so welcome! Glad you enjoyed and found it valuable :)
Thank you so much! I really am into music and teaching!
This is excellent.. Excellent Excellent
Does this happen to you guys, you stumble upon great content once you learned the concept the hard way, via trial and error ?
And then the video pops up XD
Thank you so much
Could you make a video on how to actually solo ?on any songs.
Thank you so much. I'm honored!
Superb presentation
Thank you so much!
Thank you
Thank you
Good information. What model is your fender guitar?
It's a telecaster American Professional!
thank you very much for this video
Thank you :)
Thank you for watching!
Brilliant info although it's slightly confronting to find its true, I am the guy stumbling around in a few box shapes. But this makes perfect sense. :) I have a lot of work to do but don't have unlimited free time to do it.
:)
Thank you
You're welcome and thank you!
Thank you 🙏🏻💖
Excellent. Thank u
I know I need to learn more. Very interesting Tnx. I subscribed.
Thank you so much!
Hi watching from Bangladesh
Love your lessons. Will you please send me some pdf pentatonic lick / solo tabs
Thanks for the suggestion! I think I see what you mean :)
How can I follow him up

You are so darn cute ! Not hitting on you just stating a fact. Besides, you're too young for me anyway.
I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. Trying to teach myself guitar ( and French ) at age 59. When I get really good I'll move to the French alps and play there ! A bien tot et merci! If I had lots of money I'd send you some....but I am not killing it driving a school bus. I am happy though. Thank you for teaching me something new every day. Never too old to learn something new
makes my solo more fun and sounds better
Can I ask what model telecaster that is?
American professional II :)
I've been looking at those. Very cool. Ty :)@@willmetz_music
Hi really need your pdfs sent me to me too in Ghana 🇬🇭
Hi Will, I entered my email address, but I still can't get access to the documents for the ultimate pentatonic method listed in the video. Could I get your help on this please. Many thanks!
When you enter your email, you should get a confirmation email. Make sure you check your junk or spam and confirm your subscription :)
thank you for your reply.
R.I.P. Stevie Ray.
At 0:41, you play two scales: A pentatonic minor and C pentatonic Major.
