    Fully agree on the desolder. But coming twice with the hot air ... naah, I think I had cleared the holes of the solder, stick the port through, taped it down and then do a normal soldering from the other side. Less risky.

    It's only simple/easy when you know how! A great video for people wanting to attempt their first port replacement using hot air.

    Very good (though you are obviously not sweet enough). A suggestion, instead of pliers, is to use small silicone trivet mats (intended for kitchen use) as they will raise the board, prevent slipping and don't suck the heat.

    why not low melt solder?

    I find indium metal very helpfull is such cases. Just a little bit on the tip of the soldering iron is enough for all 4 anchor points

    Pretty sure that Sorin (Hi There), was brought from the future by the Doctor himself to help with repairs. I know that he had trouble with K9, obviously before he met Sorin! 👍 A very nice video! 🙏

    I've seen some heat resistant tape melt at 250C while yours looks fine at 350C, hard to know what you'll get when buying online...

    It would have been easier to remove the port if soaked all holes with leaded solder. If you apply hot air for so long, you risk melting the plastic inside the port.

    I use a "Helping hand" to to hold PCBs when soldering.
    I was looking for a 6 clip version but it was "Sold out" when I was placing the order. I will try again later on.

    simple solution is to remove the broken usb port with a side cutter, then desolder whats left from the usb port with the soldering iron ,then clean the holes and the pads. then remove the usb port from the donator board and solder is at main board. no need for low temp melt, no stress, no nothing....

    if you replace the plastic connectors how do you solder the replacement without melting it? u heat the board instead?

  • @oilybrakes
    @oilybrakes 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    After you clean the board from Rosin with Qtips, it will still be sticky af. I use a toothbrush and that's kinda enough.
    Another interesting piece of info: your selfmade rosin flux is too concentrated.😅
    Like, by 10 times, when compared to the commercial rosin flux pens.
    Which makes it more difficult to clean.

    What can you do if you don't have a replacement port, where can you search for parts like these?

  • @panaitepaul6798

    How about a 2mm copper wire bent to touch all the pins and a low melting point solder wire. Isn't it less dangerous for the surrounding plastic parts?

    Hi, wouldn't it be possible to use a soldering iron with high temperature? The USB Jack is completely Metal and and just heating it up would also heat the soldering pads

  • @tophd7262
    @tophd7262 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You can try cover plastic parts with some used thermal pad.

    When Sorin does it, it looks so easy, when I try with same 350c, first the port melts and then adjacent components go flying and disappear :(
