Cracking a Large Missouri Geode

  • We have a lot of people comment on the fact that we are not wearing safety glasses in this video. 1. We have the towel on it to keep debris from flying. 2. This video was taken in 2014 when we were just starting to take videos and post them online. We were very new at that time and have since learned that wearing safety glasses and leaving the geode uncovered is a much better way to crack them. We definitely believe that safety comes first, please understand that we were still in the learning stages when this video was posted. Make sure you subscribe to our channel to see when we post new content! You can also contact us through email woodiessuites@gmail.com or Facebook @fabulouskeokukgeodes

    What's the reason for cracking these an not cutting with some kind of diamond blade. As u can probably tell I'm new to this 😄😄

    • @WoodiesRockShop
      @WoodiesRockShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don't typically cut our geodes because of the large calcite formations found inside them. A saw would destroy the calcite if it were to cut through it. Many of our newer videos show the large calcite formations found in these. Thanks for watching!

  • @michaelmccormack6108
    @michaelmccormack6108 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not cut it with a rock saw or concrete saw? I use a tile saw for the small ones as well, lots of dust but a really clean cut thats easy to polish. Just curious.

    • @WoodiesRockShop
      @WoodiesRockShop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Our geodes tend to have a lot of calcite inside them and if we cut them, we cut the calcite off and it is not repairable. If we crack them and the calcite breaks it can be glued back in. We typically do our cutting after the geode is cracked open or if we have one we can see the inside of. Thanks for watching! Be sure to check out our newer videos to see more of the amazing beauties we have found.

    what you need to do is cut that handle off on the crank that sticks up weld it back on closer to the middle so then you can slide a metal pipe over the end to do the last few turns a ton easier.

    What are the crystals we find inside the geoid? Can we find emeralds?

    • @WoodiesRockShop
      @WoodiesRockShop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The majority of Keokuk Geodes have quartz crystals. We also find other mineral inclusions such as pyrite, goethite, calcite and a few others but I have never heard of an emerald in a Keokuk Geode. I cannot speak for the other geodes of the world as we deal mainly with the Keokuk Geodes. Thanks for asking.

    How would you go about polishing that monsta?

    • @WoodiesRockShop
      @WoodiesRockShop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We typically don't polish the geodes that we crack because they have to be ground by hand before they will take a polish. If we are going to polish a geode we start by saw cutting it open so the edges are fairly smooth. Thanks for asking.

  • @1950Archangel

    Why don't you try making a "stand" (like a short table) with a car-jack-style riser: you could even build it with a channel or rut in the top for the chain to lie in. Lay the chain in the rut, hoist the large geode onto the table -- jack the table surface up or down to the easier height to work with. Secure the chain, tighten the chain, pop -- and the geode halves (if you're lucky) fall onto their backs on the lift-table. It would be small enough to chuck in the back of your truck when you go to shows or to store in the corner of the room... You could even make the "table" top a wide-top bowl-ish shape? Use a watering dish for cows?

    • @WoodiesRockShop
      @WoodiesRockShop  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @1950archangel that sounds like a nice set up. Would definitely be easier on the body! Unfortunately there are so many other things packed when I go to a show that I don't have room to pack this with a stand.

    • @WoodiesRockShop
