Deserted: A neighborhood responds to the loss of its only supermarket

In December 2022, the only full-service supermarket for Baltimore's Pigtown neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods closed, creating yet another food desert in the city and adding to the racially and socioeconomically divided controversy around food access. While a nearby affluent neighborhood contains three grocery stores, residents of Pigtown - many of whom are seniors and do not own cars cars - were forced to rely on corner stores and food pantries while the neighborhood fought to reinstall a new grocer in place of the PriceRite supermarket.
