    Im 67 and got my first little hand crank sewing machine when I was 6 years old, influenced by the grandmother who raised me. Actually sewed pieces of fabric together on that toy. First and every machine after has been a Brothers. Just purchased a refurbished PQ1500s and WOW, just WOW.

    If you still have this machine - or for anyone else who has a machine that doesn't tell you when the bobbin is running out (and the ones that do aren't always that accurate) there's an old trick from before electronic machines were around. Wind a second bobbin at the same time - assuming you are using the same bottom and top thread - and use that one as your top thread feed. A lockstitch machine uses the same amount of thread top and bottom, so when the top is getting low, so will the bottom one.

    I like this one. I sew bags and packs mostly, sometimes holsters, using heavy material (retired Army). I have always used 'black' Singers (15, 201, 301, Featherweight, 306) just because I could not hurt them. Leather, canvas, 1000 denier ballistic nylon, etc. Basically anything that fit under the foot.
    My wife quilts. Got her a PQ1500sl several years ago and loved it. As she started doing larger quilts the med arm just wasn't enough so now she has a Jazz.
    I 'inherited' the PQ. Took my trusty 306 off the table and put on the PQ.. What a beast!! It not only would sew what the 306 could, but, it did it without any complaint at all. Size 110 needle with size 69 thread, 8 layers of canvas and it sewed like it was working with lace. Add in the 'modern' stuff like automatic thread cut and a knee lift. I am in love :)
    PS I like that it is a solid metal machine. Really hate plastic stuff.

    They need to pay you, your drumming up business for this machine. I too just bought one, because of your review and I love it. I also bought the light, I am an ole gal too and need to see. Although I’m not a quilter, I mainly do garment sewing this machine works like a dream. Juki who😂! Glad I found your review before I spent my hard earned money. You and your wife have a great channel, keep up the good work.

    Thank you for demonstrating the needle threader Mark... i read the directions and followed them to a t... and got nothing... EVER... then you come walking in... and show" your way" of threading.. and by Golly it works... every single time. THANK YOU!! SOOOOOO very much. I adore your approach to quilting ... you are true to thine own self and that is wonderful. As you are aware, I'm sure, most of us quilters are introverted. I could NEVER do what you do. and I have given it it considerable thought ... and have wonderful idea's... I choose to watch you and all the others that I do instead, and I am okay with that.😊💜😊
    I own three different manual needle threaders.They have been the only way I could thread the stupid needle.. so thanks again... For ALL that you do. I am getting ready to go to good will do drop off some fabric that was donated to me that I don't care for.... and hope I find at least one thing that I do like or need

    You’ve sold this machine for me. I was going for the Juki as well, but looking at the reviews it can have major problems as well.
    I’m a fan of yours from Ireland 🇮🇪
    This machine is sitting in my cart in Amazon ready to click and pay.
    Thank you.
    Love how you have a masculine piece laid on the table beside you, each time you make a video of your sewing machine 😂

    This tip may have been under another one of your videos, but it was suggested to make up 2 bobbins at the same time and then use one down in the bobbin case and the other on top for your thread spool.....that way you can watch the top spool to see when it's time to change the bobbin under the needle. Makes sense!

    I have a Brother PQ1500. The one before the SL. I’ve had her since 2006. She was my moms beforehand. It is a WORKHORSE. Rarely over all these years have I had an issue(twice). . I clean and oil regularly (once a month) and it goes in once a year to the shop for a through cleaning and service. It’s my go to for everything. I’ve thought of a Bernina , juki, and babyloc but all the dealers tell me that my brother can’t be beat. I hope you still have yours and love it as much as I do mine even after all these years.
    “Sew on”and Thank you and your family for your service .

      Susie K, I do still have my Brother and I love it after all these years. My wife bought it for me for my birthday and I will never get rid of it. I haven't had mine as long as you but I sure hope that it will keep performing like the workhorse that it is for years to come. Thanks so much for watching.

    I just want to thank you so much for making this video and THANK YOU for your service!!!! There were several machines I was looking into to buy, including this one. After watching your video I was sold on this one! What a great review!! .... So I told my husband about it and guess what I got for my birthday!!!. And OMG.... I am so amazed at how smooth this machine is. Everything about it is amazing!! ............ I also agree with you about wishing it had a warning for when the bobbin is low. My embroidery machine has that and I love it. And my other sewing machine had a top loading bobbin with a see - through cover so I could pretty much see when it was getting low. But you know what Mark, this machine is so awesome that I think I can live without the low bobbin warning. (smile) Thanks again!!!!!

    I have had a Brother regular machine for 18 years, I had to buy it to finish my daughter's prom dress when my other machine quit! I have used it for everything. I have a long arm machine but I needed a mid-arm to do my smaller quilts! My husband bought this for me for Christmas. I agree, Mark, there needs to be a warning light for the bobbin and I need to purchase the light strip. I just found your channel and will be following from now on. I thin Brother machines are amazing!!

    I have the feature to let you know when the bobbin is low and I ignore it routinely because it goes off too soon and there is still lots of bobbin thread left and I never waste thread so I end up running out anyway. What I do now is I will reach down and look at how much bobbin thread is left when I think it is about time. It isn't perfect but you get a good idea of when it will run out so you look for it. You have seriously got me looking at this machine now. I am going to save my pennies now and look at getting this one. Thanks!

    I grew up with singer machines but have had Brother for the last 25 years. They are economical, reliable, flexible and sturdy machines! The ease of use and care are wonderful too. I would love to see bobbin indicators on all their machines...and more light would be great too. But they are perfectly wonderful without those features too.

  • @winterzee
    @winterzee 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Having learned on a machine that had front load bobbin, eventually you will learn that the bobbin thread tension changes just slightly right before it runs out. I've noticed my top load bobbin also does the same tension change about 15 stitches before the bobbin runs out (I actually never see the bobbin running out even on the top loading bobbin, there's generally fabric on there above the window). I do find that it is easier to feel that tension change than see it (I'm a bit of a blind bat), it's like the material slips a hair as the bobbin is about to run out. You might try doing some samples with nearly empty bobbins to see if you can identify this spot? I can't imagine a warning light would give you more warning. (And class L bobbins, at least that is what my research told me when I was trying to figure out if I have compatible bobbins already. Thanks for your initial review and this one, they were helpful in my purchase.)

    Hello, I just purchased this fabulous machine , to lazy to read {but will read the manual because you just have to} wanted to stitch something quickly lol. We all know how that is right. I subscribed because you showed how to thread the machine and that's what you need when you get a new machine, just wanna get right to it. And you're funny bro but that's a good thing. Thanks Oh yeah, and I admire that you both share one of the same hobbies you guys rock for that.

    Thank you for this review (and for your service)! I was trying to decide what kind of machine to buy several months ago and your review made my decision for me. So far I love the machine - it’s solid, extremely fast and the large throat area is fantastic when quilting. My only problem is the walking foot. No matter how I change the pressure and other settings, the quilt still doesn’t feed evenly, resulting in puckers! I’ve resorted to using my $150 Brother 6000i for straight quilting or adding the binding with better results! Do you have any suggestions for the problem I’m having with my walking foot?

    Dude, I don't normally nit-pick but on the subject of bobbins (needles are worse) it can get confusing. The Brother PQ1500SL uses type L bobbins (you said type M on the vid). The slight taper (bevel) allows the bobbin to run smoothly in high speed rotary machines like the PQ1500SL. Peace brother! Love your vids!

    I also was looking into the Juki however because of your review when you got it, I got mine. you are correct. I love my brother PQ1500SL. i don't need all those other stitches. Whenever i need a zigzag stitch i go to my singer patchworks. I have to say when i do go to the singer i wonder how did i ever use that machine with such a small throat. I also added a light to my brother. Thanks for the updated review. i was wondering how you feel now.

    I just got my Juki-tl1800QVP. Only reason I jumped on it is cause my local dealer was selling it for $1000 brand new. It was used at a retreat so special one time pricing. Zero regrets!
    I also didn’t know about this brother till now. I would’ve got this one if the one I got wasn’t on sale.

    I have a Brother SE-400 sold as a embroidery machine but when I take off the embroidery section that hold the hoop, I can do any kind of sewing except embroidery. And it has a pop up screen that tells me to change my bobbin it refuses to sew until I do. The digital machines have a lot of little bells & whistles that the others don't but they must be handled with more care because they are computerized. Mine doesn't have the throat space for quilting large items but I think I can do it if I choose a quilting design suitable for quilting small areas at a time.. Surprising to me was it didn't cost me near as much as I thought it would and I love it. I bought it as Walmart a few years ago for less than $300 on sale.

    Just found your video and love watching. It was without notice that you have a quilting buddy as well. Mine is always near my feet. You may have already come to terms/resolved the issue of low bobbin alert. Have you tried using two full bobbins; one in the bobbin case and one as the top thread? I have done this when I couldn't find a spool in the color needed, but had the bobbins (I wind more than one). Best wishes - keep on keeping on.

    Rule of thumb on your needle. Change every project unless it’s a really small one

  • @hweiyilee6559
    @hweiyilee6559 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    About the needles -- I understand that this machine is supposed to take the HLX5 needles which are more heavy duty and thus better able to withstand the fast sewing speed since normal domestic machines have a top speed that's around half of this machine. So maybe an upgrade of needles might be the best insurance against breaks!

    I have a Bernina which uses the same type of Bobbin and when the thread gets to almost out my machine starts making a sort of clicking noise which I assume is the bobbin. Pay attention and see if your machine changes sounds when your bobbin is running out of thread. That is the only warning that my machine gives me. Love your viedos. NY Beauty soon? I keep hearing great things about this machine. I have a vintage Singer, and a computerized Brother, but this PQ you have has so many great revuews, now yours, on its quilting quality. I have a question, does it really need that much oiling though? I am busy doing oiling on my Singer, & my emb machine (a lot , it's huge) and my Brother is new so they don't say to do much oiling at all. I will look at my paperwork. I am older and the memory isn't so good ...what do you thunk. TFS. Someone needs to tell Brother company about you. Let's all put in a word for Mark? ! Should we, or would Brother company trip? Lol

    I just got my pq1500sl on August 25. I am having an issue with tension. The tension is either too loose where the stitches aren’t straight or too tight and my fabric is puckering. Can you show or tell me how to adjust the tension?

    I am really close to purchasing this machine and the price is reduced on Amazon and Walmart right now. I really want a Bernina though. I strictly want to use it for free motion quilting.

    Mr. QM, I see the yellow cone thread. I just got the Brother PQ. I was told cones like that were not for sewing machines but were for embroidery ones. Have you used the cone kind yet on there? I'd love to get that size so it will last longer if that person I talked to was incorrect. Also, is it cotton? I prefer cotton. Thank you again for your videos!

      Yes you can use the big cone thread on any machine as long as you use a thread spool holder.

      Greetings I’m researching this machine heavily. I visited my dealer today to prove their machine was priced incorrectly and to test stitch genuine leather sandwiched with foam since I’m a bag lady. Tons of trouble as the dealer was unfamiliar with the machine. However, i learned to sew leather and thick fabric you MUST install the pin and activate the pin feed system. I believe info can be found on pages 11 and 19 of the manual

    Any idea why my new machine won't do one stitch? My bobbin gets multiple threads and the top thread comes out of the needle

    • @TheQuiltingMarine
      @TheQuiltingMarine  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carol Conant try changing your needle. The needle may have a burr and is cutting the thread. Let me know

      The Quilting Marine thanks for your advice. I did change the needle and had to make multiple adjustments to the tension. I was getting a little curve to the top stitch but its almost perfect now. Just finished a christmas tree skirt.
