I use under canopy for 3 runs in my tent now and I will never go back without them. More light from above just don’t give you the enhanced quality and quantity of flower that under does. It’s not a game changer but it’s an improvement that pays itself in no time. As for toplights, the quantity is more important than the actual light spectrum.

Place lights on the sides and it's way more efficient than mounting them on the floor.

@ in a tent? Where branches and flowers touch the sides? That aside I would have to use at least 2 instead of 1 under. That doesn’t sound more efficient to me

@johnwayne122 side lights are much more productive than floor mounted lights. If you managed your tent properly then side lighting is extremely productive and you don't need much extra wattage just the correct spectrum to compliment the main light/lights. Twisting leafs is a common problem with floor mounted lighting because photosynthesis occurs via the leafs top surface and not it's underside. This is simply not as good for the plant as light coming from the sides and from above. I have tried using both methods and it really is very obvious what the plants find easier to convert.

I had an unused Mars Hydro SP3000 that I used for undercanopy in my 5X5 hung upside down and facing up across my tent and it made a noticeable difference in nug size and quality from the lowers. My next run, I was using the SP3000 in another tent and did not use any undercanopy lighting and realized what I was missing, so recently picked up a number of Mars FC-1500 lights to hang upside down for under-canopy lighting. I only wish those lights were removable from the bars themselves to make positioning them closer.

I have always used under canopy lights since the early 1980s. After my first. My previous years were always growing outdoor.. 1980 I moved to indoors and a combination outdoors. I noticed how indoors the lower branches suffered greatly with bad development so I stuck lights down on the ground facing upwards from underneath at a 45° angle.
And I got butt development as if it was the top crown of the plant on the lower branches drastically increasing my yield per cubic foot of canopy.

What I always wondered is the perfect distance for under/intra canopy lights? If we put such strong lights too close to the plants will they not get damaged by light-intensity/ temperature? Therefore I thought I will add weaker under-canopy lights, to not have to worry about this. Because as a non commercial grower in a small tent, a plant could easyly touch the intra-canopy lights.

      I wondered the same.
Mammoth has some that they say contain no red diodes, just white and blue, and that red diodes are the ones that cause burns. I don't know if this is true or not, but in my experience i would lean to yes.
Eg.. some strains get more yellow sooner with a red-heavy spectrum.
That said, if any light is too bright it will burn, I'm just not sure on various spectrums, except of course UV.

Can I cause more stretch with far red below? Do I want to do any of that? Are there other things to mess about with? INB4 someone tells me I can just google it as it's all be figured out already.

More light will increase uniformity and work the same as using a stronger light without putting extra stress on the tops if you are pushing them hard already. The bottom of leaves if only a tiny bit photosensitive so I do not think sticking them on the floor is the way but around the sides of the tent at the C bud level would be sweet. There are 3 studies if you look, at least two have corporate sponsors and no disclaimer for conflicts, and one is from a pretty TH-cam-famous researcher that noted some growth but also negatives if you use too much.

For my 3x3 tents I've been using mars hydro VG-40 strip lights for under canopy lighting. They go for about $60 when on sale. They're only 40 watts per pair but they definitely make a noticeable difference in the quality of lower nugs. It's saves me tons of time trimming larf which I absolutely hate. They come with clear plastic covers to protect from water but I can just pull mine out of my tents in a few seconds so I don't really need to worry about them getting wet.

I'm all for under/intercanopy lighting, the debate is over for me. The only set back is the width spread on these units, based on the chart reading provided these lights in particular have an incredible 1 foot width spread along with 4 feet of lenghth of optimal added light to really give the plants that boost for growth up and down the canopy if done correctly with light intensity adjustment. Now with that information, it is really on the individual to make an educated decision whether or not this is ideal for their set up/garden. The tools are provided if you choose to incorporate.

100w light, tent cost, fans, ac, etc will draw significantly more electricity - but the real savings are in the time invested in lolipoping, the time saved on no longer having any larf C buds to have to trim. With the UCL4 you can Emerson effect and shave off a week from your flowering cycle. With the UCL3 you will be amazed at the color expression, terp profile, and evenness of the maturity of your flower from top to bottom. (Granted I may be a little bias) Thanks Shane awesome video and great to meet you and hang out at MJbiz.

That is totally logical and will work, 660nm and 730nm red can actually penetrate really well through the leaves so you depending on the depth of your canopy adding the light from below will bulk your lower buds and supplement the top buds at the same time, as is above is below (shout out to A and B on the 1 year anniversary of the Miami Mall inter-dimensional time space portal they ripped open).

@randylayhee3018 I am no longer growing so the only reason I care is simple curiosity. That certainly won't stop me from stating my opinion.lol. My guess is the % of benefit realized is going to vary based on the amount of above canopy lighting. If you are maxing the above canopy lighting the % is going to be low. If your above lighting is weak then the % will be higher.
I did do an experiment on this many years ago, pre LED, purely by accident. I was growing small plants horizontally in a chamber that I made that consisted of 4, 4ft. fluorescent tunes situated s above the plants. That was 1 2 tube shop light. I used another shop light that I dis-assembled and mounted low, under the plants, one on each side. Anyway, I left for a week leaving a friend to care for my plants. When I returned the lights above the plants had come unplugged and not working. The leaves on the plants had twisted around trying to get the tops turned toward the light. This makes me believe that the tops of the leaves are more photo receptive than the bottoms, making the tops more efficient.
Anyway, the experiments that are sure to follow will be interesting.

get a bigger tent. also.. most math says 2x2 PER PLANT so why youd be growing "a few" of them in a 2x2 is beyond me. 2x2 is basically just those 1x1 light panels and the 4 inch ducting and fans, theres really not room to have loads of gear in a 2x2 space (also not much room for big plants..). dont get me wrong, its nice to have for when im treating the plants with sts solution so the pollen doesnt end up on the ladies, but im not trying to grow a huge plant in the first place if im just growing it for pollen.
