i loved the DnD movie. varirous times me and friends would try to set up a session to play but it for varrious reasons just never came to fruition. So this movie was great for me!

the effect at 4:25 is so incredibly slick
i enjoyed the D&D movie a lot. as a lifelong DM a lot of the film's "random" moments were familiar to me -- the "bridge crosser" ex machina came across as the movie's DM realizing the players just hard-locked themselves out of content by destroying the bridge puzzle, thus "umm roll me arcana? WOW actually you have a bridge-crosser, congratulations"
whether or not this was intentional by the filmmakers I can't say, but the movie appealed to me mainly because I felt "in on the joke" of commiserating over my players' antics.
    that said,
another perfect BLT sandwich from johnny marks!

Thank you! And yeah those inside references (intentional and not) clearly struck a cord. Was obvs less my bag but it means a lot you liked both the movie & my weird video!

I just finished the video but I completely believed this video was from a well established TH-camr with hundreds of thousands of views. Keep up this incredible editing and video style, this is a hidden gem.

I simply disagree idk what to add. I mean you're free to your opinion and you did help me understand why someone would dislike the movie, I simply disagree.

You perfectly captured how I felt about the D&D movie! I’m going to shamelessly steal your BLT metaphor

I respectfully disagree. The movie wasn't a piece of high art, it was a fun popcorn flick that tried to capture the "magic" of playing a good D&D campaign. D&D is a game, to be played for fun. the movie was fast paced and fun (to me at least). Not everything has to be super realistic, and yes, the Hither-Thither staff was a deus ex machina and could be pointed out as bad writing. But I guess I have an ability called suspension of disbelief, so I can enjoy things as they are, not nit pick every detail so deeply that every sense of enjoyment is left scared and bleeding. Everyone is different and enjoys different things, at least this version had some respect for the source material, instead of the quick cash grab of the Jeremy Irons' attempts.

I agree with this take. It makes more sense to view media from the angle it’s presented in. I probably would have been disappointed if the D&D movie had been some deep art movie (or at least it would have felt very different), rather than wacky tabletop hijinks

The D&D movie probably had better writing than most D&D campaigns.

@@leonelegender No but, if you want your movie to feel like a D&D game, shitty writing helps.

I respect that you have an opinion about the D&D movie, but the consensus has spoken: it's a good movie BECAUSE of all the things YOU don't like. So you just need to accept it's not for you.

I will say, while I've played TTRPGs since I was a tween, my parents have *no* experience playing them, and they enjoyed it about as much as I did - make of that what you will.

For some reason, author/creator intent is always a big thing for me. Even if a piece of art ends up being interpreted favorably, if I feel like the creator's intent was to portray things differently but instead stumbled their way into audience approval, it doesn't fully sit well with me. While the whole death of the author concept is not one I completely oppose, I also feel strongly about the individuality of art as made by the artist, to a degree that when a viewer misconstrues author intent by such a large margin, it feels to me like it may be reducing from the artist's 'presence' in their work, if that makes sense.
That being said, I loved the D&D movie as a casual flick for much of the same reasons everyone else did. Now having had my eyes opened to the fact that much of what I had forgiven as "haha, random D&D moment!" was actually straight up shortcomings in the script, I can't look at this movie the same way. I wouldn't say you stripped the joy out of the movie for me, but rather made me reanalyze it in a more critical light, which is inevitably a win in my book. I still think the movie was cool, I still had a good time with it, but I think most of that goes back to the fact that I regarded it as a casual big-budget, turn-your-brain-off kinda flick that I saw with my closest friends (those also being my D&D group).
Idk what kind of conclusion I'm trying to reach here, and I know I've rambled on for far too long, but to conclude... Awesome video, would adapt to film, and would risk upsetting you if it means that would allow it to be properly translated for the big screen!

Thanks! I was a bit worried this video would come across as a turdy rain on everyone’s parade, so the fact you got something valuable out of it means a ton!

The funny thing is I completely agree with you and I still really like the dnd movie. I think that yeah the intent behind it was obviously fucked and that's kinda funny but that doesn't really do anything to my enjoyment of the finished product. I completely understand why some people would get turned off by that but personally I don't think author's intent matter to my enjoyment of their work.

i feel like the Vox Machina show (pared down and stripped of some of the cringey/quippy/Marvel-y dialogue) would have made a better D&D movie than this D&D movie. that said, i watched this twice and it's a fun little popcorn delivery system. didn't hate it. as far as pop fantasy goes, i think it dodged more bullets than it caught
