    I like using the Palette knife when doing the highlights and shading in the mountains I paint. It gives it that rocky texture when adding more details to it.

    The ultimate deciding factor is that the knife is easier to clean.

      @@michaelsullivan1262 If we talk about oil paints - you need to use toxic liquids to clean brushes. If you ok with it - it's great, but some people as me are too sensitive to chemicals and can't use them. So palette knife is an amazing solution :)

      Lunar Ferns you can clean your brushes with baby oil or safflower oil works good to. Then I wash them in half and half water and Murphy’s oil soap. This is how I clean mine. No more toxic cleaners for me.

    I gave up painting mountains with a palette knife a long time ago, I simply don't have the feel for it. Actually, I gave up painting mountains period, unless they're very distant with no detail. However you gave some good tips on using the brush that I hope to try at some point, thanks' Kevin.

    Knife mountains look closer and sharper, brush mountains look more distant and diffuse. I guess the deciding factor is the look you're going for. Nice job!

    Using the knife has been so challenging for me

  • @paintingwithbrandon-BBart
    @paintingwithbrandon-BBart 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I for sure agree with the thought process that the brush allows for a more distant looking mountain, and the knife typically has sharper edges and looks closer. So for me, that is what I would typically lean on when deciding between the two.

    Love using the palette knife for mountains!! Great comparison!!!

  • @phracture
    @phracture 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Both awesome mountains. I find that I enjoy making the mountains with the brush because its more intimate...like you said it's almost like you place every rock, snowpatch, glacier, sunlight patch and shadow. It's a bit more personal and fun. I will say though using the knife is usually faster and sometimes letting the scene fall out of the knife (less control) actually gets you a better result as nature is random after all! Thanks for sharing!

    First I would just like to say, I know nothing about painting, but I do enjoy watching your videos. I couldn't tell you the difference between oil or acrylic paints. Having said that, to an untrained eye, I like the texture you get from the knife. I appears to jump off the canvas a little more than the brush. To me, it looks like learning to master the knife in painting would be a lot more difficult. I could be wrong as I have stated, I know nothing about painting. They are both beautiful, but the knife affect looks a little more realistic for me.

      I would say that you have a good eye for art.

    • @chemistrycat3961
      @chemistrycat3961 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      PL K I think it completely depends on the perspective of the artist. Personally I feel that nothing looks more realistic than a skilled artist using brushes. On the other hand, as a new painter with no formal training, I can’t use brushes. I find the blending very difficult and with the way my mind works I need to work with textures (impasto) and layering. I bet that artists that tend towards realism probably gravitate towards brushes and away from the palette knife and vise versa for abstract artists.

  • @purkaitsurajit53
    @purkaitsurajit53 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kevin, I like the brush painting slightly better than the palette knife one. The reason behind is in the inherent flexibility of the brush over the knife. You can do a dozen or more textures - deep or light depending on how hardly or softly you press your knife against the canvas.
    But with a brush you can literally paint hundreds of different textures and effects!! You can also use a hard brush, a soft brush , a very thin brush etc to create a wide variety of effects and textures!! The left side mountain range is somewhere I would like to spend my next vacation on. The right side one I would like to see on a post card!!😊😊

      @@sayednasr makeing colours more brilliant many artist varnish their work. It makes the paint more vivid looking, the painting needs to be fully dry at last 6 months. With gamvar you can varnish a painting as soon as it's touch dry. Pritty much most mediums bring out the colours, you just need to experiment with them. I'm learning things all the time that I didn't even know about and I've been doing this for a long time, you never stop learning that is what makes art so wonderful because it's endless.

      @catherinegreenup4608 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your reply. Yes, Acrylic is water based and Oils are oil based of course. They wouldn’t mix. But I thought if the Acrylic was dry, might be able to use oils on top to highlight areas I’d like to look brighter. Acrylics go so much darker when dry it’s hard to get some things to shine out without using a few layers of Acrylic. I love the way Acrylic dries rapidly though and you can actually see your painting develop and take character whilst it dries. I’m an armature, very much still learning so probably not yet got the technique for highlighting.
