    I'm a product design student. I see metals cast, CNC cut and even 3D printed. Until this video I had never fully appreciated the skill and beauty involved in hand forging metals. Such a wonderful process. I'd love to see more

      Thanks a lot for this comment Tom. thats what i love about this craft, every thought is visible within the hot steel, the hammer speaks the mind if you like. in a conversation with the fire, something that only this can give you. thats what drew me into this craft. i have a few more videos up so check them out if you havent already, Cheers!

    This is the best video I've seen yet on how to forge a basic leaf. Well produced with explanations along the way make it stand above the other videos on TH-cam. Great work!

    great video. a leaf like that would make for an exquisite arrow head.

    • @workingwithiron
      @workingwithiron  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its the same process Emile, just needs a socket or a tang on the other end and a steeper angle of bevel. its a great idea for another video.
      Cheers!

    Great tutorial man, my girlfriend is away for a little while, so I' going to try and make this for her while she's gone. One question, if I wanted to curl the leaf, should I do it before or after I put in the veins?

    • @workingwithiron
      @workingwithiron  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      AFTER!! nice one, yeh do it after as when the veins are done on the flat its easier to get the symmetry also if it were curled then you would have a gap underneath it so it would be knocked flat again to get the veins in.
      Im sure she will love it.
      Good luck and let me know how you got on!
      All the best

      I hurt my shoulder working out, so I haven't been able to work on it much :\ I made a couple of attempts, even made my own chisel to put the veins in, and was finally getting the hang of it, and then the shoulder incident. As soon as it clears up though I'll be back on it!

    • @GrandHochmeister
      @GrandHochmeister 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Hey man, thanks again for the great tutorial! I gave her the leaf last week and she loved it! My leaf ended up being a bit longer and and thinner than the one in the video, and I took some steel wool and scrubbed down good to give it a semi-shiny luster to it while keeping the veins dark. So ya, this was one of my first projects and it turned out pretty well, she even wants me to make her another now, hahaha.

    Would it be possible to make a bottle opener with a leaf handle like this?

    • @workingwithiron
      @workingwithiron  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that is possible, the mass is there either in 1/2 inch bar or you could use flat bar and isolate the leaf part using fullering techniques like i did on the Toasting fork video. I want to come back to leaves again as this was one of my first vids and since this ive learned so much more. Give it a go!

      Great news! Its an easy first project but get plenty of steel to practice many. id suggest forge a load of leaves then a few openers and then combine the two with the same stock. Let me know how you get on!
