One of the best written and well-acted scenes in the entire series. It was so satisfying to hear these characters finally say these words to each other. Sarah and Matthew (and all involved) deserve all the awards!
Aside from this entire scene, my favorite line from Tom to Shiv in season 2 was "I love you I do it's just I wonder if the sad I'd be without you would be less than the sad I get from being with you"
BTW this line wasn't even in the original script, somebody (Jessy?..) came up with it close to or during shooting. Was on HBO Succession podcast for that episode if I'm not mistaken.
One can write an entire book about the complexity behind Tom's and Shiv's relationship. They are the embodiment of "wrong person, wrong time" but how they want to make it "right person, right time" because deep down, they love each other. ❤
Yes. There is so much potential in their relationship. They could have talked properly but they didn't. They could have listened properly, but they didn't. It's like you are fixing something which is broken that should not have been broken in the first place bc all the elements to be "the right person, right time" is there, they just didnt act on it.
Do you really think they actually love each other? Tom wanted power and money, shiv wanted someone who would never backstab her. IMO they both wanted the control and the power first, second to the love. But I don’t buy for a second that they truly love each other for who they are as people.
I’m not sure if they’re so much “wrong person wrong time”, I think their relationship is better understood in terms of power/control imbalance. Shiv had it first 2 seasons, then Tom winds ultimately by being CEO of her dad’s company. I don’t think there’s potential in their relationship even in earlier seasons, Tom clearly wanted power and always wanted more and that’s why he was willing to eat whatever shit thrown at him and even offering to go to jail just to secure some rapport with Logan. They were both competing for the same thing, had she stayed in politics then maybe yes - but obviously he wanted more of her on all scales (family power, love, kids..), I don’t think they could ever work.
@@xoxjelloxox I frankly believe that they both love each other. She said "yes" sooner than she would have liked. But he was her guy, beginning with Shiv's trauma and Tom flew to be with her in France. Tom got to know Shiv better than she knew herself. In fact, by being the family outsider, he took a more objective view of the family and did not particularly like what he saw. In season 3, after Tom returned to the hotel from meeting with Kendall at the diner, you knew then that there was another person underneath bumbling Tom .
I only discovered yesterday that the director and writer of this very American show are both British. When I looked them up on IMDb and I saw their tv pedigree, it all made sense. Some of the best, most incisive UK comedy of the last few decades is their work. Well done, guys, what a triumph of a show!
"Succession is filled with a lot of different actors with very different approaches. I would say of the whole group, these two are the most in sync with how they approach a scene. They're a dream when they're together." 🙌
Tom and shiv will remain one of the most toxic and heart breaking married couple in recent tv history. I hope Matthew and sarah will remain friends for their life because they have given most entertaining, emotional , sadistic arc and performance to their characters ( there is something extraordinary about tv series which you can't find in film )
Matthew and Sarah are stunning and brutal together. Matthew has to be the finest actor I’ve come across in years. He embodies everything, doesn’t push anything, is natural, weak, strong, funny, with ever responding ✨electrical ✨emotional authenticity. That’s what makes him the most relatable human in this show.
I didn’t realize I needed a Sarah Snook in my life, but she has became a favorite actor after Succession. Everyone who worked on this show deserves ALL the rewards.
Fact that i'm watching this at 3am is a huge testament that i just can't get over such a magnificent show like this and i still miss it every single day and that this dialog hurts like lemon squeezed on an open wound.
One of the hallmarks of this production is how the cast and crew didn’t operate on total discretion with one another. Actors were finding things out as it came time to shoot and the crew pretty much gave the actors freedom to interpret the scenes as they felt fit. For a show whose central theme is distrust amongst these characters, it takes a lot of trust to be able to make such a masterpiece of a show. I’m still not over Succession ending and this video didn’t help 😭.
Matthew macfadyen has been silent since premiere of season 4. He is neither in any promotional video of season 4 nor campaigning for his emmy except w magazine ( I think he is forced by his publicist)
The whole show is characters intentionally masking every word, even their insults.. so this moment where every sentence is a dagger to the heart was so raw
It's a really brilliantly acted scene. Vitriolic but painful. I can see the Virginia Woolf comparison; it's a lot of resentment building to an explosion, with love and hate inextricably tied together. Also, it addresses much of what the viewer has been seeing and feeling for a long time: it gives voice, finally, to all that. And the actors really rise to the occasion, landing every line.
This scene, the long take when Logan dies on the phone during Connor’s wedding, and the final episode scene where Kendall is begging Shiv to vote for him are 3 of the greatest scenes in anything ever filmed ever
Yep! That scene in episode 4 where shiv gets the call from her doctor was shot in January months after they had shot the rest of the episode and they added it in
I know thru out the show it's implied that Tom is below Shiv (leagues beneath, according to Logan 😂), but I never saw it that way. I honestly think in most ways, Shiv didn't deserve Tom.. If looking from a standpoint of finances and power, yeah marrying her is the equivalent of marrying a royal princess and having access to endless money & benefits. But Tom always put her interests before his (barring the final season after she had betrayed him beyond repair) - and that's really what love is about. She couldn't receive his love, trust it, and honestly she didn't deserve it.
He was the one to betray her first. They actually do deserve each other, that’s sort of their doomed destiny. That’s why ultimately they stay together in the end
Hilarious (and pathetic) that whoever made this video obviously doesn't know anything about "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf", and whom "George And Martha" are in it, both the characters and the actors who played them. She starts talking "George and Martha in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf", they show a pic of Sandy Dennis. 🤣 This is Variety magazine, right? What a joke. I'll bet these people love to throw around the word "iconic" as if they know what it even means, lol.
Because actors have to sympathize with their character no matter how heinous the character is so that the portrayal is compelling & believable. If the actor doesn’t believe in the character they’re playing, no one will. Actors have to view their character differently than audiences do, which is why it can be jarring to hear an actor talk about their role like in this video. If the actor has contempt for their character, that will stick out negatively in their performance. She spoke in another video about rationalizing why it was justifiable for Shiv to talk the sexual assault victim out of testifying in the S2 finale. Actors who are playing, say, serial killers must do something similar. None of us can know for sure but I highly doubt she is like Shiv in real life! Nobody would tolerate her if that were the case. Based on photos and videos on social media she seems to be close with the rest of the cast. She has a very bubbly personality in interviews unlike Shiv.
Season 4 didn’t hit the same as past seasons. Scenes like this felt forced and too obvious. It missed the sharp subtly. Not to mention the same fight and dialogue happen between the two in multiple episodes. Nope, not impressed
I understand what you mean in the sense that there was less attention to the whole narrative of Succession and more so on specific characters. They gave a lot of energy to Tom, Shiv, Roman and Kendall on an emotional level but left out what actually happens after Logan died. Well, it makes sense that after he did, everything fell apart and people literally lost the plot. Succession will be a never ending viscious cycle of mistrust where people might turned out to be "better" but not winning and those who win are scarred.
I actually think this was the strongest season. All the subtly was intentionally dropped in my opinion because no one has Logan is there as a diffuser anymore. Logan’s no longer holding the center. To me season 4 was about his kids realizing they were never going to measure up to their dad. Kendall especially. To me all the subtlety was ripped away for the main characters because they were no longer in the protected orbit of their patriarch. They all learned they were bullshit as Roman said that the grandiose image each of the three younger kids had was a facade that was built on quicksand. That their dad was right they are not serious people and you got to see each of their self images crumble when hit with the truth.

In order to give a good performance she has to look at it from the character's point of view. I'm sure she recognizes the character flaws but part of why she's so great is that she connects with the motivations on that level.
In other interviews she’s quite critical of shiv. Actors have to be able to see their characters point of view in order to play them realistically… the same is true of pretty much all other actors on the show, you just chose to pick on shiv’s actress
