This life, despite ego boost was a day and nightmare! Competitive, stressful and vapid. Powerful people will try to bed you, too. I left! Escaped.

About the photographers and the agents and the clients and other models, and what they had to do and with whom and how often, to try to make it.

And I became more happy to be just average looking with a regular steady job. We were great friends. Too bad we lost touch. I hope she is well.

yeah everyone that talked about being a model seemed to hate it , Im tall and skinny so as a teen if i had the right attitude i probably could have done it i went to model parties with friends and did like a photoshoot where i looked like a model and someone literally invited me to try out for a university fashion show but it had like real models in it, it was embarassing i went home and the only one that was nice to me was this girls mom. I dont know maybe if i had imagined them being nice they would have been nice .

Completely agree with you. I knew a gay man who was a makeup artist for models in NYC. I learned a lot through him about the industry. It's really is objectification at its finest. People are seen as a piece of meat.
Gia Carangi opened the door for all of these models and especially Cindy because she looked a lot like her. After the loss of Gia the modeling world was desperately looking for someone to take her role. Cindy was in the right place at the right time. The rest is history

I had the pleasure of meeting Cindy at a restaurant I was a hostess at in South Beach, 1995. She would frequent the place while filming a movie (name of it escapes me). She was sweet and very down to earth. She would call the restaurant herself- She would ask for me by name because i knew her favorite table and what to order for her. She even let me introduce one of my friends to her - he had a huge crush on her. We all talked about being from the Midwest. I met many famous people/celebrities back then, and she stands out for her humble nature 😊
Trivia: When Cindy Crawford was starting out in the modeling industry insiders used to refer to her as "Baby Gia" because she resembled Gia Carangi, the super model who had a spectacular rise to fame and a disastrous fall from grace.

First of all, as much as I like Prince, he had a reputation for "discing" women who turned him down. For me, Yasmeen Ghauri and Linda Evangelista were the most beautiful. I was told by a friend who modeled back in the 90s that Cindy Crawford got a lot of bookings because she was known as being the easiest to work with and had an excellent work ethic. She never allowed fame to get to her like some of the others, and for Photographers and Designers, work ethic goes a long way.
Yes! It was impossible to get a bad picture of her too, as she is a stunning beauty even without or minimal make up.

Cindy Crawford was one of the most alluringly beautiful models of her era without the controversy that afflicted some of her peers which subsequently held her in high regard as a supermodel.
… if you like men in drag that is because there’s nothing feminine about her, she definitely has more male features than female and in fact apart from the hair I can’t see any feminine features at all, her face is hard with a jaw that most men would be proud of, she has no hips which is the mark of a woman, there’s no softness to her at all, so that’s probably why she made a good model as she’s more like a coat hanger than a soft curvy woman and without the make up I think she would look more manly than womanly but the high cheek bones with no female cheeks seems to be a look these days so I can see why you think she’s attractive judging by the beauty standards that are promoted in the media, but personally I prefer a more female looking woman to the hard masculine look

I had to scroll down to see if we were referencing the same person or by some minute stretch of the imagination Hercules or Mr Universe. I use the word allure sparingly as it is a delightfully rare quality more to do with being, powerfully and mysteriously attractive or fascinating, seductive. Qualities not dictated by whether you wear a makeshift bin liner as a dress or exclusive expensive designer attire. A magical aura creating a magnetised interest of pleasing curiosity.

I have been around many transgendered people and when I look at this person I see many similarities to my trans friends and not to my natural born female friends, in fact, I don’t know any women who look like her.
But maybe she was born a female and maybe the trans people I know based their looks on her and that’s why they look so similar 🤷🏻♀️ who knows, but you’re right, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and just because I see a man in drag when I look at her, it doesn’t mean everyone else will and in fact, many of my trans friends pass perfectly to many people as natural born females so I guess it’s just people like me who have been around them a lot who see the male traits of wide shoulders, no female hips etc, so maybe I’ve been around trans people for too long and now when I see traits that are generally attributed to males, such as large jaw and large facial features, big low down ears, wide shoulders, huge thick straight across collar bone, big trachea, huge feet, huge brow ridge, long arms etc etc, I automatically see them as male 😭 I maybe need to keep away from tranny’s for a while and not keep attributing these traits solely to men as I know we can all share traits and because she was a Tom boy when she was young, maybe she was just born with more testosterone than most women 🤷🏻♀️

@@lorrainefryer Nah. As an ex model (not a big time model), women can be really harsh in the beauty industry. Janice Dickenson was turned down for years because of her coloring. It's just the way people are. The friend Cindy was with was also a model. Gia was had dark coloring and hung out with Janice a lot and after Gia died of AIDS, Cindy was called the "new Gia" because there just weren't any brown eyed, brown haired girls with full lips back then. Christie Turlington broke through barriers too.
I’ve worked for talent management agencies and yes A lot of models, musicians and even actresses do moonlight as e$corts for the higher ups when not working. Numerous books have spoken about this. They do dip their toes in that lifestyle (and places like The Cannes film festival is one of their hunting grounds) so it wouldn’t surprise me & Even if she was. It doesn’t matter. Life isn’t always soo straightforward and straight laced. She still has done very well. It doesn’t take anything away from her for me.

After her modeling career, she spent time in France and had a short singing career there. You can find interviews she did with several French newspapers and magazines in which she talked about all of it. Unfortunately, a lot of people weren’t paying much attention back then.

Cindy was my favorite among the 90's "supers." She rose to fame quickly because of her versatility and business acumen. Her management produced posters, calendars, fitness videos, makeup books, she hosted MTV's House of Style, posed for Playboy, and married Richard Gere. Cindy Crawford wasn't just a model, she was a brand. And was much more visible in the mainstream media than her contemporaries. I used to follow her career closely, I actually had the Elite Management book with all their tear sheets, including Anna Nicole Smith's. Believe me, there were never any rumors abour her being an escort. Also, Prince's lyrics about "paying the fee" was a nod to how expensive she and her cohorts were (Linda Evangelista said that "she didn't get out of bed for less than $10K a day,") and meant every word of it!
I saw Kaia Gerber in a season of American Horror Story and I was stunned by how much she looked like Cindy. Both she and her mom are gorgeous! 🖤

I'm not sure if this was mentioned, but Cindy also had a successful make up book back in the 90's wich I fully credit for teaching me the basics about make up application. It was a very practical, down to earth guide.

The fashion industry is now saying the sample sizes are just too small and they can't have bigger models because it wouldn't fit them. Look at the "90 there is no way she fit into the current sample sizes for a runway. Models are getting breast reductions to work in the sizes. The designers did that.

It's because designers are not tailors and they don't know how to fit curves. They used to be able to make everything themselves and then they dressed curves.
@@IflieIt's not that they don't know how to fit curves, it's that small-busted rectangles with flat glutes are the easiest to dress and therefore take the least amount time to fit etc. The fashion industry is all about business and money, not clothes & creativity.
@@MD-722 Couture clothes can take weeks to make, fitting them for the actual models would take a fraction of that. They want to design for easy bodies because they don't have the skills, so they think it's too hard. They hire taylors to create their "vision" before even picking a model.
But curves are what made '90's models look good to everyone. And they were already on a permanent diet.

A model from one of my fav fashion documentaries “Catwalk” addressed the ‘models don’t have brains’ trope and she mentioned how ppl would be surprised since they have everyone that thinks for them (hairstyles, clothes, hotels to stay at etc) they have so much time on their hand(the models) to learn and invest in their interests. And I think of that every time I hear the misogynist tactics society use to belittle women and their passions.
Also, modeling is one of the few occupations dominated by women so I’m not surprised men hate on it. They make it so obvious when they are jealous of women and irritated by their lack of control where they are not the main character.
You summed it up perfectly! A few models I knew and know now, spend all their modelling money on college education. I’ve never met a “dumb” model. Their usually happy and smart. I see how men would hate that. At this point it is what it is. Anyone who doesn’t hate women wouldn’t just assume “all models are dumb.” It also shows you can never win as a woman through a male pov. You’re insanely beautiful you must be dumb but yet they tell women all that matters in life is how beautiful you are. As women we just need to do our own thing and not worry about what men think of us.😊

Funding their college as you mentioned, participating in world topics, or even learning an instrument/ language. They use their time very wisely. When you stop living for the male gaze and decenter men, you realize there is truly more to life than the like of a man ( who is most likely very annoying) who will never and could never be a woman.

I saw an interview with a former booker decades ago who spoke about some of the abuse that goes on in the modeling business. She said there were some girls, like Crawford, who everyone knew not to touch because they were going to be big money makers.
