  • The life cycle and interesting life traits of the Citrus Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio demodocus demodocus).
    We take a look into the life cycle of the butterfly and I explain the colour forms of they larvae. The pupae are interesting and they mimic a broken off twig to hide in plain sight! Once the butterflies eclose they are ready to find a mate and continue the population!
    We take a look at the self defense mechanism of the larvae called the osmeterium.
    Taking all the different shot of the life stages for the video took 4 weeks and I'm really happy about the outcome of the video!

    my citrus swallowtail just hatched right now! too bad i missed it just as it was getting out of the chrysalis so i’m watching this. I put it somewhere safe where it can stretch its wings.

    Beautiful videos! Love the time lapse. Would it be possible with the transformation from larva to pupa to either provide more frames per minute or use a slowing technique in editing? The actual transformation could be set as a separate video. Remember that when you talk about one larva, say larva rather than larvae. A very common slip. Same with one pupa, many pupae.

      Thank you very much! Yes that is a very simple slip of the tongue that I should stop!
      I unfortunately don't have more frames. I'll be doing something like this again, but then I will decrease the rate at which I'm taking the shots which will yield a slower and more detailed time lapse! Thank you very much!

    How long will it take from a chrysalis to a butterfly?

    • @ABugMansLife
      @ABugMansLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is dependant on the time of year. They can overwinter as a chrysalis and then it will take 3 to 6 months, whereas in the summer it can take 3 to 6 weeks.

    So the browning of the chrysalis is common? I was afraid it's dead.

    • @ABugMansLife
      @ABugMansLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the browning is normal. It is a method to camouflage itself as a dead branch stub in order to avoid predation!

      @@ABugMansLife my caterpillar made a chrysalis that's completely green instead of brown, and it's been like that for more than a week, is that normal too?

    • @ABugMansLife
      @ABugMansLife  ปีที่แล้ว

      That shouldn't be a problem. There are some that stays green throughout the pupation phase.

    PLEASE HELP!
    My citrus swallowtail's poop is liquidy, unlike usual and he curled up to a c shape. What is happening? Is he dying? Is there anything I can do??
