I just want to say, I love listening to Rob and Pete, but it has been pure joy listening to how much Rabea and Lee have improved over the years. Your voicing has gotten really good, Lee, and your use of space is great now as well. I tip my hat to you, sir. Your hard work is showing.

I have owned two electramatics for 4 years now. I love these guitars . I play them everyday. My expensive guitars stay in the closet. The electramatics are so comfortable and play so well. I think every guitar should have a master volume. Genius idea.
Thanks to the Captain and Danish Pete for spreading the Gospel of Gretsch .

From Leo: Lee must be jamming with a lot more skilled musicians these days, his skills have grown exponentially. I have had a sweet spot for Gretsch guitars for 50 years. The voice of Filtertron pickups has always been outstanding. Glad to see that the Fender marketing people have been making them a lot easier to get. Great guitars, When you play them, it is hard to believe they are not $1795.00.

I love my Gretsch 5230. Fantastic guitars. I can't believe how nice these guitars are - solid mahogany (no glue line that I can see, either), solid mahogany neck, walnut fingerboard, gorgeous silver top, and a Bigsby. Gretsch should be selling these guitars for much, much more. Like Lee said, Gretsch is making "just great" guitars.

I regularly play a vintage 1963 Gretsch Double Cut Duojet for work and have tried out the top end Malcolm reissue. The new one is closer than I thought it would be. Almost an acoustic guitar as the block in the center stops around the bridge and the top floats freely from there. Mine is practically a banjo. It has the sparkle drum covering on maple that moves like CRAZY. It is louder acoustically than my 335. These new all solid PAUL LIKE Electromatic Jets are not the same category. They are solid body Gibson style guitars with Ray Butts designed pickups that take them out of the Gibson category (once plugged in) with their top end sparkle and zero mud. They are a great first guitar for a student who wants to get good and can't decide between PAFs or Tele pickups yet. They are great back up guitars...and yes, they are great "character" guitars for your tour... if you break one, you won't cry about replacing it. If you are watching this and drool over real old school 6120s, best to look past the cosmetics and learn about "trestle bracing" vs open bracing and urethane vs nitro before you buy. If you are a hard core AC/DC Malcolm fan, you want that hollow quality in the higher priced model. He set his amps pretty low gain and the fatness you hear is that nearly-hollow guitar with the filtertron. It also feels right for those Malcolm riffs. Fun video, guys. Skøl!

Re hot rods and rat rods: Hot rodding started in the 1930s and in the very early days was related to speed runs on the Bonneville Salt Flats. After World War II it expanded into a more generalized car culture phenomenon and became formalized as drag racing by the mid/late '50s. Fundamentally it consisted of dropping the biggest and most souped up V8 engine possible into as small and light a car as possible, usually a 1930s coupe, with all unnecessary bodywork removed and racing it against similar vehicles at the local drag strip, though many youths preferred street racing from traffic light to traffic light. (For a taste of this see the film "American Graffiti".) Street rods, on the other hand, were generally less extreme hot rods that were street legal and as much for show as for go. Street rods were fully part of the American custom car scene with dressed up engines (very heavy on the chrome), expensive custom paint jobs and interiors.
As time went by and hot rodders got older they often prospered economically and could afford, maybe in their 50s, to go back to their old hobby only now they had a lot more disposable income to throw at it with the result that local hot rod and custom shows were full of professionally built, super-expensive usually repro-bodied so-called hot rods belonging to some old geezers who promptly walked of with all the prizes. It was at least in part as a reaction to this and also largely because of a generational change that rat rodding started. The aim of rat rodding is to make the car look as old and, in guitar terms, as relicked as possible as if it has been put together in a junk yard but with nothing restored and with all the "patina" intact. In other words, with faded paint that has peeled off in places and has exposed the bare metal to form surface rust, frame rails showing and the exhaust belching out black smoke. It's the antithesis of the super shiny street rod esthetic. Don't make the mistake of thinking that they're cheap though 'cause they're not.

I love my Gretsch, but I find that I far prefer the sound from my PRS SE hollow body, and it’s more compact and comfortable to play. Unless I need the bigsby, or a filtertron tone for something specific, I rarely ever pick up my Gretsch over my PRS lately.

My UK friends, Rat Rod is a concept of old, where you will put your money into the engine and go fast goodies, while the body gets just enough love to work. Pretty simple. That's why you'll notice the body, paint, and looks are less important than how it works. So they say, "who cares how it looks, as long as it COOKS!!"

I really like how good they are for the money and how they feel, as well as how versitle they can be. As well as that I like how you don't sacrifice much for going cheaper and that they don't label much on them to say you're buying something really cheap. They make good affordable guitars.

The whole line impressed me more than any other Guitar that I've tried during my 6 hour shopping tour, testing literally every guitar that Music Store had to offer in Cologne :D I was looking for a boring Fender Strat but fell in love with the Gretsch. A hotrod is a suped up classic car that's all sparkle and shine. Metallic paint and chrome. A ratrod is a hotrod that's been made to look understated, bordering on shitty. Primer and rust.
The 5420t is like a hotrod. You can get it with the orange glitter finish, all sparkle and shine. The 5410t is only available in matte grayscale finishes, so it lookd a bit understated. The body is also a little thinner.

It is a nice guitar, but it ain’t the best thing ever as the video may give the impression. The first one I received arrived with fret issues, from one of them being installed crooked, the electronics are super cheap and overall it is exactly what you can expect from Chinese manufactured guitars. I just had an idea for when John Mayer (or any artist) comes to Andertons. You already did 3 Sounds Like John Mayer and tried to make his pedalboard on a budget, so why not try to make a Sound Like John Mayer BY John Mayer ? It could be really fun to see him wander around the store, choose his rig and seeing what he is thinking when he choose a piece of equipement (why does he take this pedal, this guitar/amp ? What kind of sound is he looking for etc). You could even give him a setup like he forgot his rig at home and all he has on him is 1500£, and he need something to play a Grateful Dead & Co concert, or a John Mayer Trio concert, etc ! Great video, take care of yourself !

AC/DC are/were all great people. My Wife flew from Heathrow to Miami with both my kids in the late seventies (when they were toddlers), AC/DC were onboard. The members of AC/DC provided more help in getting her off the plane and through the officialdom than BA were. They carried the boys and their pushchairs - anyone with children will tell how much sheer stuff you take for toddlers on an intercontinental flight (specially as I was in Cannes for MIDEM at the time). No one is allowed to badmouth AC/DC in my presence! Best, Pete.

Full of himself, pathetic attempts to be funny, and his guitar tone was so high gain he made almost every guitar sound the same.
