    Quite interesting Andy. With the Covid outbreak now lots of people dying daily in this pandemic. Back then this was built to stop a different pandemic.. Cholera.. Great history for sure!. Cheers from Missouri USA!

      The engine in the science museum is the one taken out of one of the BCN pumping stations.

    Andy Thanks for this I knew nothing about this engine. Its worth visting Claymills on a steaming day if you are going through Burton on your boat

    Grew up near Lichfield but knew nothing about this, thanks for that insight Andy. There is a working beam engine in Eastney, near where I used to live, which was built to pump sewage out to sea. Also as a result of the cholera epidemic I believe.

    Are the boilers still there? Are/were they in a separate boiler house? When was the chimney taken down? A work of beauty and compliments to the people preserving this engine.

    • @lifeat2.3milesanhour57
      @lifeat2.3milesanhour57  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The boilers are long gone and I guess the chimney went in the 60's when the electric pumps were installed.

    What a great video Andy, shame it's not running yet! That'll be great for the community when it is. I've been to 2 or 3 beam engines, and they always fascinate me. I never knew about this one, and like all of them, they give way to electric pumps, so they need to be preserved. They are our industrial heritage after all, and this one will add to the numbers.

    • @lifeat2.3milesanhour57
      @lifeat2.3milesanhour57  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Graham - glad you found t interesting. I think that n the absence of any boiler kit the plan will be to free it up enough to have the engine rotate and show how the mechanism worked. That means that the electric pump room can be used for community activities. Its a great memorial to the age,

    He missed a few, not the least of which are:
    Papplewick (north of Nottingham)
    Crofton, a pair of 42 inch engines, one of which is the oldest working beam engine in the world in its original building

    • @morturn
      @morturn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob, Papplewick is mentioned at 8:15. Crofton, as much as I love the place, was not really part of a scheme to deal with cholera or Public Health and wellbeing which was the subject of the video.

    As you leave Lichfield travelling towards Walsall you climb up towards Muckley corner, through the area of Pipehill. I wonder was Pipehill named after this set up?? Also as i live on a boat close by i must pop in sometime.

    Not one of your better efforts... As in the old adage "don't work with children and animals", add 'don't work with interviewees who repeat the question'....
    Lovely views of Victorian muscle machines.
