The amount of wood burning must be crazy!

Sometimes it is cost prohibitive. It can easily be many thousands of dollars in wood.

the weight of wood is proportional to the weight of all the pottery
but often those kind of kiln are directly built near forest so it's often not that expensive for the owner (it really depends on where the dragon kiln is though)

@@ikanasisse9661 That's a good point. The problem is with a pottery town that's been in production for a few hundred years the forests don't last too long. In Jianshui there are no forests nearby. They're also very picky about the type of wood. They want to use pine and it has to be dried just right. It isn't available locally anymore so they have to have it brought in. It's quite an expense.

Each chamber actually has a fire. One fire at the base would not suffice. In each chamber, ware is set to the "left" of the chamber and fire is set to the right. The smoke and heat does rise all the way from the lower chambers to the chimney at the top. The flow is regulated by dampers at the top flue/chimney. This arrangement allows the products of several pottery studios and pottery requiring different firing conditions to be set in separate chambers. There's a lot more to the firing process than meets the eye. It would be a shame to see this old kiln to disappear. In Japan, the older kilns are set aside and rebuild as National Treasures but it seems that the Chinese don't hold these artifact in very high regard.

You're right they do continue the fire in each chamber. This kiln and some others in the area are being preserved. They're also building new ones for use and only firing these on special occasions.
