  • A Toyota Master Tech conducts a 30k service on my 3rd Gen Tacoma and changes out the spark plugs as part of the service.. We end up finding Finding a loose spark-plug, and find “blow by” on an ignition coil.. check your spark plugs on your 3rd GEN Tacoma’s and make sure that the factory didn’t send you your Tacoma with loose plugs!! A 60k service could be too long to wait to check your plugs!

Auto mechanic turned design engineer here with over 30 years experience. What he did with the plugs is totally fine. Started by hand, light torque on drill and hand torqued at the end. The plastic oil filter housing removal was also fine. That plastic housing gets so tight not from people over tightening but from different expansion and contraction rates between the plastic filter housing and the aluminum engine. the shock the hammer and screw driver has, loosens the housing a lot easier than potentially cracking it with a cup slipping under excessive torque. In my experience even a hand tightened plastic housing becomes seized again and really packing some axle or that assembly grease he uses on the threads will make it come off easier next time. An aluminum housing would be best as it will expand and contract at the same rate as the aluminum component it’s attaching to.

The reason this guy doesn't have a steady gig at a dealership isn't because he wants to be a good guy for the customers, its because he breaks more stuff than he fixes.

I loved this guy! Jason is a very detailed person. Although, I am puzzled why he doesn't have the proper tool to remove the oil filter. I have 2rd Gen Tacoma and doesn't require any special tool, but once in a while friends or relatives with one of these non-spin on type. Channel lock, I don't know, should only be use in pipes??? Overall, the guy does a GREAT JOB!

He doesn't normally do Oil Changes, so he has never needed one. Most of his jobs are pure suspension upgrades. I have had my Tundra (that he has worked on) for 16 years and haven't ALWAYS used the filter tool when doing oild changes on my own.. This comment is a non issue to anyone that owns MULTIPLE Toyota trucks as the oil change can be completed just fine, without. Anyone commenting on his skill set based upon that ONE tool, is a tool, sorry. He has worked on my Tundra (trying to diagnose a noisy suspension squeek), he installed an Eibach Pro Truck Stage 1 kit on my 5th Gen 4runner and later replaced both wheel bearings and spark plugs and... he took in my 2016 Honda Civic that had a non functional Power Steering issue which he later found to be a chewed wire harness from a rodent. That repair cost me a FRACTION of ANY other shop and everything worked PERFECT after Jason completed the repairs. I won't take my vehicles to ANYONE else, if possible.

You're wasting your money on several things. Plugs are not to be replaced until 100K. You can remove them to clean them and possibly re-gap them. Using a drill to drive in spark plugs is dangerous. You can easily cross thread them and then you are f**ked. Not to mention wiping out the thread on the head being stripped. Diff fluid and tranny fluid 60K is fine. Except for the front diff, which looked like you took in water, I'd check the fluid and if it's still gold in color, plug her back and ride until 60K. I've owned Tacomas and even early 4WD pickups before they were called Tacoma, and I have gotten almost 300k from them doing practical maintenance with zero issues. In fact, I've never had one truck bite the bullet as I have sold them before that could happen.

That wasn’t 12-14 foot pounds just so you know. I don’t think he overtightened them so much that anything would happen but 100% there was like 20-30 foot pounds on at least one of those plugs. Usually with a NEW spark plug that has a crush washer, you tighten it finger tight with only the extension and then no more than 1/2 a turn after that. You’ll easily feel it crush the gasket and get much harder to turn almost suddenly. Then you’re done

From someone who does their own maintenance, I got to say there was some cringe worthy moments in there. Looked and sounded like he dropped a spark plug down the tube. Then all the tightening spark plug components with an impact gun. Reusing crush washers because "the other side was still good". Like only one side crushes when you tighten it down? Removing a plastic oil filter housing with channel locks. Probably all good but I'm am a bit of a perfectionist. I would die if someone did that to my truck.

Honestly I’m not personably comfortable with using a drill on my plugs.. but I trust Jason and his 30 years of working on Tacomas to know that he is very confident in his abilities and isn’t risking anything that would jeopardize my truck.. now if the drill was the first thing he used and would have been cranking them down thenI would have been worried🤣, but all good🤙🏼

First... 3RD GEN Tacomas spark plugs are replace at 60K and no need for anti-seize
Second.... every time the transfer case, the rear diff oil are replaced you must replace the drain plug washers. none of that was replaced.
Third ....for the price of the DENSO spark plugs just get the OEM spark plugs for the same price .
Fourth... CERTIFIED MASTER MECHANIC have the correct tools to perform the repairs , not pliers and a pry bar to remove the oil filter housing, BTW no need to put whatever that grease was put on the oil housing.
Fifth.... if you do all those repairs at any Toyota dealer ( yes they are pricey) you have warranty

Ok I looked up that ignition coil, and the price over the phone is more than msrp, my local dealer is selling it for $94.68 AND they price match from their website. So dealers parts cost less on their website than in person
The msrp is $124.98 how are they charging $150

    • @westcoasttaco

My guess is that they try to take advantage of people that are on the phone and don’t realize what the prices actually are on the website.. and they make a profit or some type of commission.. who knows? Essentially the only reason I knew they were up charging that part is because of how much I was getting it for online.

I'm a weekend DIY dummy but seeing these guys use the impact wrench on these small bolts always makes me cringe. My Taco's skid plate bolts were all cross threaded by the neanderthal at the dealer doing my oil changes probably from using an impact wrench and not starting it by hand.
Every decent hand drill has a clutch setting to prevent torquing the shit out of your bolts. Just use that if the excuse of using an impact is speed. Start it by hand, use the drill w/clutch and finish with torque or by hand.

    1. Talking shit about other people, places, and scoffing isn't a good thing, and comes off as douchy.
    2. Bragging and doing all the "talking" raises red flags because the work isn't matching the "talking."
    3. As many have mentioned, this "master" does a lot of things that aren't really at that level. Knowledgeable, but nothing impressive, on the contrary, the stuff he does is average.
The real question is how much did you pay this "master" and did you get a discount for making the vids? If so, how much does he charge for this job?
Everything from your superficial "I am helping other taco owners" to him selling you his "words" just smells fishier than bad poon poon.
FYI, I checked out the tacomaworld forums, his threads, his website, and his pics.
The whole thing comes off as some joe smoe mechanic who caught a lot of big fish on the tacomaworld forums.
Tacoma owners are interesting breeds too, I never understood the "money dumping" behavior on a reliable pickup truck.
the guy who does my lawn roll-up in his taco would joke that those fancy tacomas are basically"taco bell" or "gringo tacos"
My 2 cents is that this is not "all that." And Isn't 100% transparent.
